The Broken Ribbon

Chapter 01 - The Broken Ribbon

Chapter 01 - The Staged Tears

The heavy oak front door of the Sterling residence swung open, letting in the cool evening breeze along with Adrian’s exhaustion. He tossed his car keys into the brass tray on the entryway table, expecting the usual quiet warmth of his home.

Instead, he walked straight into a wall of sound that made his blood run cold.

Loud, ragged sobs echoed down the marble hallway from the living room. Adrian’s heart hammered against his ribs as he dropped his briefcase and sprinted across the hardwood floor.

The scene that greeted him in the living room looked like a war zone of fractured vanity.

Six-year-old Mia was curled up on the rug beside the glass coffee table, her tiny body shaking violently with deep, uncontrollable gasps. Her delicate lace party dress—the one she had worn to her school piano recital just two hours ago—was crumpled. Her pale pink silk ribbon was still pinned perfectly to the right side of her head, but the left side...

Adrian’s breath hitched in his throat.

The soft, golden blonde locks on the left side of Mia’s head were completely gone, hacked off violently near the scalp. Long, jagged strands of hair lay scattered across the dark carpet like fallen feathers. In Mia’s small, trembling hands, she clutched a clump of her own lost hair against her chest, crying so hard she couldn't breathe.

Just two feet away, Vanessa was slumped on her knees against the velvet sofa. Her own polished brown hair was wildly disheveled, pulled out of its neat bun, strands hanging across her face. She held her cheek, weeping loudly into her hands, her shoulders heaving with dramatic, heartbreaking gasps.

Beside Mia’s knees on the floor lay a pair of heavy, sharp silver dressmaking scissors.

“Adrian!” Vanessa gasped, looking up through tear-filled eyes, her voice choked with tragic anguish. “Oh God, Adrian, you’re home! Thank God!”

Adrian stood frozen in the archway, his eyes darting frantically from Mia’s disfigured hair, to the silver scissors on the rug, to Vanessa’s dramatic display of grief.

“What happened here?” Adrian asked, his voice shockingly quiet, carrying a dangerous, vibrating tension.

“It’s Mia!” Vanessa sobbed, scrambling backward on her knees, placing a trembling hand over her heart. “I tried to help her change out of her recital dress! I told her she was acting spoiled because everyone at the school kept complimenting her, and... and she threw a terrible temper tantrum! She grabbed my sewing scissors from the side table, Adrian! She threatened me! When I tried to pull them away from her, she went crazy... she cut her own hair off and tried to stab me!”

Mia’s head snapped up. Her tear-streaked face turned deathly pale. “No... Daddy, no...” she whimpered, her voice tiny and broken. “I didn't... I didn't touch the scissors...”

“Don’t lie to your father!” Vanessa shrieked, tears streaming down her contoured cheeks. “Look at my hair, Adrian! She pulled my hair! She almost cut my face! I was so terrified she was going to hurt herself or me!”

Adrian didn't move. He stood completely still in the middle of the room.

He remembered the recital earlier that afternoon. He remembered standing in the lobby of the academy, watching parents surround Mia, praising her flawless piano performance, calling her an angel, commenting on how stunningly beautiful she looked in her dress and pink ribbon. He remembered looking at Vanessa’s face in that moment—the subtle tightening of her jaw, the cold, envious glare she darted toward her stepdaughter, the way she pulled her hand away from Adrian’s when someone said Mia looked just like her biological mother, Sarah.

Vanessa hated being outshone. She hated Sarah’s memory. And above all, she hated Mia’s natural, effortless grace.

Adrian slowly walked over to Mia, dropping to his knees. He picked up his crying daughter, wrapping his broad arms securely around her tiny frame, lifting her up against his chest. Mia buried her face into his neck, soaking his collar with her tears.

“Daddy’s got you, baby. Daddy’s got you,” Adrian whispered, kissing the rough, chopped side of her hair.

“Adrian, what are you doing?!” Vanessa cried out, standing up and dusting off her designer trousers, her voice laced with outrage. “She needs to be punished! She’s out of control! She ruined her hair and attacked me!”

Adrian stood up, holding Mia firmly in his left arm. He turned his eyes toward Vanessa. They were completely devoid of warmth—as cold and sharp as shards of ice.

He pointed his right hand toward the ceiling corner above the fireplace, where a sleek, black dome lens sat silently mounted against the crown molding.

“Play the camera,” Adrian said.
