Flames of Jealousy

Chapter 09 - Flames of Jealousy

The downtown art gallery stood dark and silent under the torrential rain, its grand glass facade reflecting the flickering streetlamps.

Adrian pulled his SUV onto the sidewalk directly in front of the gallery doors. He didn't bring Mia—he had left her securely guarded by Mark’s heavily armed security team at the lake house. But he had come alone, carrying only his gun and the burning fire in his heart.

He kicked open the gallery’s side emergency entrance, stepping into the quiet, echoing darkness of the exhibition hall.

The air inside smelled suffocatingly sweet—the heavy, chemical stench of high-grade gasoline coated the hardwood floor.

Standing in the center of the main hall, beneath a spotlight shining down on Sarah’s famous self-portrait, stood Vanessa.

She wore an expensive leather trench coat, her hair wild and disheveled, her eyes wide, glossy, and completely insane. In her left hand, she held an open, yellow plastic fuel canister. In her right hand, she held a silver Zippo lighter, its small yellow flame flickering dangerously in the dark room.

Scattered across the floor beneath the painting were long, jagged golden strands of synthetic hair—a sick, twisted recreation of the hair she had hacked off Mia six months ago.

“You came,” Vanessa purred, a dark, victorious smile spreading across her face. “Where is the brat, Adrian? Did you bring my little angel?”

“Mia is safe, Vanessa,” Adrian said, taking slow, deliberate steps forward, keeping his hands visible at his sides. “She is far away from you. This is between you and me.”

“She belongs to me!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing violently off the high concrete walls. “I was supposed to be her mother! I was supposed to have the perfect family! But every time you looked at her, you saw her!”

Vanessa pointed the flaming lighter toward Sarah’s portrait.

“She’s dead, Adrian! Sarah is dead! But you kept her alive in this room! You built a shrine to a ghost while I was standing right in front of you!”

“You didn't want a family, Vanessa,” Adrian said softly, stopping ten feet away, staring straight into her unhinged eyes. “You wanted control. You wanted to erase Sarah because you knew you could never match her grace, her kindness, or her love.”

“Shut up!” Vanessa screamed, her hand shaking violently as the lighter flame danced near the gasoline-soaked canvas. “Shut up! I’ll burn it! I’ll burn her face into ash!”

“Do it,” a deep voice purred from the shadows behind the main display pillar.

Julian Sterling stepped into the dim light, holding a silenced handgun aimed straight at Adrian’s head.

“Light it, Vanessa,” Julian ordered smoothly. “Burn the painting, and then we finish Adrian once and for all.”
