The Unmasking

Chapter 02 - The Unmasking

Vanessa’s voice died instantly in her throat.

The color drained from her cheeks with terrifying speed, leaving her face as gray and lifeless as wet chalk. Her posture, previously slouched in dramatic victimhood, suddenly straightened up, rigid as steel.

“What?” she whispered, her hands twitching at her sides.

“The living room camera,” Adrian repeated, his voice dropping into a register so low and lethal that the ambient noise in the house seemed to disappear. “The smart security system I installed last month. The one synced directly to my phone.”

Vanessa’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. She had completely forgotten about the small black dome. It sat discreetly among the dark decor of the mantle, its subtle blue status light blinking quietly in the ambient light.

Adrian pulled his smartphone from his suit jacket pocket with one hand, keeping Mia cradled tightly against his shoulder. He tapped the screen three times, initializing the cloud playback app, and set the phone flat on the glass coffee table, stepping back.

The high-definition video feed began to play in crystal-clear quality, the audio booming loudly through the room’s surround-sound speakers.

On the screen, the living room was quiet. The front door in the background had just closed. Vanessa walked into the frame, tossing her designer clutch onto the sofa. Mia followed behind her, holding her piano certificate, smiling innocently in her lace dress and pink ribbon.

“You think you’re so special, don’t you?” Vanessa’s voice on the recording was sharp, dripping with venomous contempt.

“What?” little Mia asked on the video, shrinking back toward the edge of the rug.

“‘Oh, Mia is so pretty! Mia looks like an angel! Mia plays like a prodigy!’” Vanessa mimicked in a mocking, hideous screech. She stepped close to the girl, towering over her. “They only say those things because they feel sorry for you. You’re a plain, boring little brat.”

“Daddy said I played good...” Mia whimpered on the screen.

“Your father lies to you to make you feel better!” Vanessa barked. She suddenly reached over to her sewing basket on the side console, snatching the heavy silver dressmaking scissors.

On the video, Mia let out a small gasp, backing away until her spine hit the glass table.

Vanessa grabbed Mia violently by the left side of her golden hair, lifting the silver blades into the air.

“Vanessa, please! Don’t!” Mia screamed on the recording, her hands reaching up defensively.

“Now let them call you pretty,” Vanessa sneered.

With three brutal, heavy snips, the sharp metal blades hacked through the thick golden locks. The hair dropped to the rug. Mia collapsed to her knees, sobbing hysterically, holding her fallen hair in her tiny hands.

The video didn't stop there.

The entire room watched as the recorded Vanessa casually dropped the scissors beside Mia, reached up with both hands to deliberately mess up her own hair, pulled several strands out near her forehead, rubbed her eyes until they were red, and dropped to her knees, screaming fake tears toward the front door right as the sound of Adrian’s car arrived in the driveway.

The video feed finished, looping back to the beginning in silence.

The living room was as quiet as a grave.

Vanessa stood frozen beside the sofa, staring at the glowing smartphone screen on the table. The mask of the grieving, abused stepmother had not just slipped—it had been completely pulverized into dust.

Mia hid her face deeper in Adrian’s neck, her quiet whimpers the only sound breaking the heavy silence.

Adrian looked up from the phone. The fury in his hazel eyes was no longer a fire; it had solidified into absolute, dark, unwavering hatred.

“You staged the entire thing,” Adrian said, his voice flat, completely robbed of human warmth. “You tortured my child, and then you tried to frame her so I would hate her.”

“Adrian... listen to me,” Vanessa stammered, taking a tiny, hesitant step toward him, her hands raised in a desperate pleading gesture. “I... I lost my temper. I’ve been under so much stress lately... your work hours, raising another woman’s child... I didn't mean to—”

“Don’t step any closer to us,” Adrian warned, his voice cutting through her excuses like a razor blade. “If you take one more step toward my daughter, I swear to God I will forget every piece of civilized restraint I possess.”

Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks, terror finally piercing through her narcissistic defense. “Adrian, please! We can fix this! We can take her to a high-end salon tomorrow! They can style it into a cute bob! Nobody has to know about this video!”

“Nobody has to know?” Adrian let out a cold, hollow laugh that sent shivers down Vanessa’s spine. He picked up his phone from the table, locking the screen. “The video is already backing up to three separate external cloud drives. And in five minutes, it will be in the hands of the police and my family lawyer.”

Vanessa’s eyes widened in horror. “The police?! Adrian, you can’t call the police on your own wife! It will ruin my father’s company! It will ruin my reputation in this city!”

“You destroyed a six-year-old child’s spirit because you were jealous of her dead mother,” Adrian growled, stepping past her toward the front entrance. “You don't have a reputation anymore, Vanessa. You’re finished.”
