The Price of the Truth

Chapter 15 - The Price of the Truth

The investigation lasted months.

There were no dramatic courtroom confessions.

No single moment when everyone stood and applauded.

Real consequences came slowly.

Bank records were examined.

Signatures were analyzed.

Emails were recovered.

Witnesses testified.

Vanessa cooperated fully.

She faced professional discipline for witnessing documents she had not actually witnessed.

She accepted responsibility.

Evelyn tried to blame Richard.

Richard tried to blame Evelyn.

Their alliance collapsed exactly the way alliances built on greed usually do.

The foundation recovered most of the missing money through frozen accounts and asset settlements.

The properties were saved.

Richard lost his position at the firm.

Several partners bought him out.

His license came under review.

Allie’s divorce proceeded.

The day they met to finalize the settlement, Richard looked at the wedding ring still sitting on the table between them.

“You know I loved you.”

Allie believed him.

That was the hardest part.

A person could love you and still harm you.

Love did not erase betrayal.

Love did not restore trust.

Love was not a lifetime exemption from consequences.

“I think you loved me in the way you knew how,” she said.

Richard looked hopeful.

Then Allie continued.

“But the way you knew how was not enough.”

He lowered his eyes.

“Was any of it real?”

She thought carefully.

“Emily was real.”

Richard cried then.

Quietly.

Allie almost reached for his hand.

Almost.

Instead, she stood.

“Be a better father than you were a husband.”

Then she walked out.

On the courthouse steps, Emily waited.

“Is it done?”

Allie looked at the bright afternoon sky.

“Yes.”

“How do you feel?”

Allie considered the question.

“Sad.”

Emily nodded.

“Anything else?”

Allie smiled faintly.

“Free.”

Then Emily handed her a folder.

“What’s this?”

“A proposal.”

“For what?”

Emily grinned.

“Your next life.”

Inside was a plan to expand Morgan House nationwide.

Allie stared at her daughter.

“You did this?”

“We did.”

“We?”

Emily pointed across the street.

Daniel Reed stood beside Helen.

May you like

And next to them was someone Allie did not expect.

Vanessa.
