The Man Behind the Marriage

Chapter 10 - The Man Behind the Marriage

The confrontation happened in Helen’s office.

Richard arrived with two attorneys.

Allie brought Helen.

Emily came by choice.

Richard looked genuinely startled to see his daughter.

“Emily.”

“Dad.”

He moved toward her.

She stepped back.

The pain on Richard’s face almost looked real.

Almost.

“Allie has dragged you into something you don’t understand.”

Emily placed the photograph of the waiver on the table.

“I understand this.”

Richard’s attorneys looked at each other.

Richard went silent.

Helen spoke.

“We are prepared to challenge every transfer involving Morgan House.”

Richard leaned back.

“Then challenge them.”

Allie watched him.

“Why?”

He looked at her.

“Why what?”

“Why did you marry me?”

One attorney objected to the question as irrelevant.

Allie ignored him.

Richard stared at her for a long time.

Finally, he said, “I loved you.”

“Past tense?”

His eyes shifted.

Allie felt the answer before he spoke.

“I loved who we were.”

“No. Tell me about my father’s land.”

Richard’s face emptied.

Helen placed the old letter on the table.

For the first time, Richard truly lost control.

“Where did you get that?”

Allie almost laughed.

Twenty-six years of marriage.

And that was his question.

Richard stood.

“This meeting is over.”

Emily spoke.

“Sit down, Dad.”

Everyone turned.

Richard stared at his daughter.

Emily’s voice shook, but she continued.

“You spent my whole life telling me Mom was too busy. Too ambitious. Too married to the Army.”

Richard said nothing.

“But she showed up.”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Every time it mattered, she showed up.”

Then she pushed the waiver toward him.

“You were standing right beside me when I signed this.”

Richard looked away.

“You knew I trusted you.”

The room became silent.

Allie saw something collapse inside her daughter.

But she also saw strength replacing it.

Richard gathered his papers.

Before leaving, he turned to Allie.

“You think you won because you found some documents?”

“No.”

“Then what do you think?”

Allie stood.

“I think you made one mistake.”

Richard waited.

“You thought my uniform was the reason I was strong.”

She stepped closer.

“It wasn’t.”

Richard left.

Two hours later, Judge Harris called.

The board vote had been moved up.

Not Friday.

Tomorrow morning.

Richard was making his final move.
