Home Wasn't a Place

Chapter 19 - Home Wasn't a Place

Two years passed.

Ethan divided his days between work and college.

His battered duffel bag remained in his closet.

He could afford something newer now.

He simply did not want one.

It reminded him of the person who had arrived with nothing except questions.

Marisol eventually returned Lily's photograph to him.

“You should keep it.”

Ethan shook his head.

“It belongs with you.”

So Marisol placed it on her living-room wall.

Not hidden in a drawer.

Not buried under regret.

Displayed.

Thomas retired from airport operations the following spring.

At his retirement dinner, he surprised everyone.

He did not talk about awards or years of service.

He talked about Gate 17.

“A young man walked into my airport one morning,” Thomas said, “and I thought I was about to discover something I had lost.”

He looked at Ethan.

“I was wrong.”

The room became silent.

“I discovered someone I had never earned the right to know.”

Ethan lowered his head.

“And he gave me the chance anyway.”

After the speech, Ethan approached him.

“You're getting dramatic in retirement.”

Thomas smiled.

“I've had bad influences.”

Then Ethan handed him a small box.

Inside was a key.

Thomas frowned.

“What is this?”

Ethan had rented a larger apartment near campus.

Two bedrooms.

“I figured you should have a spare.”

Thomas stared at the key.

“For emergencies,” Ethan quickly added.

“Obviously.”

“And you're not moving in.”

“I wasn't asking.”

“And don't start showing up every morning.”

Thomas smiled.

“Seven-thirty?”

“Eight.”

“Seven-forty-five.”

Ethan laughed.

“Fine.”

Thomas closed his hand around the key.

Neither man used the word father.

They did not need to.

But that night, Ethan received confirmation of his graduation date.

The university allowed each graduate to list two parents or guardians for the ceremony program.

Ethan stared at the empty form.

One space was easy.

Lily Cole.

The second took him nearly an hour.

Then Ethan typed another name.

Thomas Whitaker.
