Chapter 01 - He Walked Into the Airport With His Mother’s Last Letter—Then the Manager Saw the Old Photograph

## chapter 01 - The Boy at the Glass Counter

The young man looked too tired to be traveling.

He stood beneath the bright glass ceiling of the airport terminal wearing a faded blue jacket, his dark hair uncombed, one hand gripping the handles of a battered black leather duffel bag. Travelers hurried behind him, dragging suitcases toward departures, but he never once looked at the flight boards.

He had not come to catch a plane.

The woman behind the customer service counter gave him the polite smile she had given thousands of strangers over the years.

“Can I help you?”

The young man swallowed.

“I hope so. My name is Ethan Cole.”

Something in his voice made Marisol Vega stop typing.

Ethan slowly opened the old duffel bag. He reached inside and removed a yellowed envelope, then an old photograph with worn, curling edges.

He placed both on the glass counter.

Marisol looked down.

The color drained from her face.

The photograph showed two young women standing shoulder to shoulder, laughing beneath a summer sky. One was Marisol at twenty-two.

The other was her older sister, Lily.

The sister she had not seen in twenty years.

Marisol's fingers trembled.

“Where did you get this?”

Ethan's eyes lowered.

“My mother gave it to me.”

Marisol stared at him.

“Your mother?”

“Lily Cole.”

The airport noise seemed to disappear.

Marisol gripped the edge of the desk.

Behind her, Terminal Operations Director Thomas Whitaker had just stepped out of his office. He noticed Marisol's expression and walked toward the counter.

Then he saw the photograph.

Thomas stopped.

For several seconds, the sixty-one-year-old man did not breathe.

His eyes moved from Lily's young face in the photograph to Ethan standing across the counter.

Same dark eyes.

Same crooked half-smile.

The same small scar beneath the left eyebrow.

Thomas whispered a name he had not spoken aloud in nearly two decades.

“Lily.”

Ethan looked up.

May you like

Marisol turned slowly toward Thomas.

And for the first time, she understood why her sister had sent the boy to this particular airport.
