The Public Reckoning

Chapter 09 - The Public Reckoning
The sun shone brightly over the grand marble steps of the Federal Courthouse in downtown Manhattan at noon on Friday.
Over fifty news crews, national journalists, and live broadcast vans surrounded the plaza. Senator Richard Vance and Victoria stood near the top of the steps, dressed in expensive suits, flanked by a team of high-profile corporate lawyers, offering fake smiles to the flashing camera lenses.
“We are here today to seek justice for our family’s corporate integrity,” Senator Vance announced into a wall of microphones, pretending to wipe a tear from his eye. “A tragic tragedy of fraud has compromised Cole International—”
Before the Senator could finish his speech, a fleet of three black luxury sedans pulled up to the curb at the base of the courthouse steps.
The crowd went dead silent as the doors opened.
Nathan Cole stepped out, dressed in a flawless charcoal suit. He walked around to the passenger side, opening the door for Grace, who looked breathtaking in a tailored emerald green dress, her long dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders.
In his arms, Nathan carried little Lily, who wore a sweet white lace dress with a bright yellow flower in her hair.
Gasps and frantic camera flashes erupted across the plaza as the young family walked together up the marble steps, flanked by Mr. Vance and six security guards.
Senator Vance’s face turned pale. Victoria stumbled back against her lawyer’s arm, staring at Grace in utter shock.
Nathan stepped directly up to the bank of microphones, placing a warm hand on Grace’s waist while holding Lily close to his chest.
“Members of the press,” Nathan’s voice resonated powerfully across the plaza, broadcast live to millions of viewers nationwide. “For five years, powerful, corrupt individuals used lies, threats, and corporate blackmail to keep my family apart.”
Nathan looked directly into the news cameras, his expression strong, proud, and uncompromising.
“Today, I am officially announcing three things,” Nathan declared. “First, the Cole Estate has finalized a fifty-million-dollar lawsuit against Senator Richard Vance and Victoria Vance for felony assault, attempted kidnapping, and corporate extortion.”
The crowd erupted into wild shouting and frantic questions from reporters!
“Second,” Nathan continued over the noise, “by the explicit instructions of my late father’s last will and testament, fifty-one percent of all voting shares in Cole International have been officially transferred into an irrevocable trust for my daughter, Lily Cole.”
Nathan turned to look at Senator Vance, whose face was completely drained of color as federal marshals quietly began stepping up the courthouse stairs behind him.
“And third,” Nathan concluded, holding Grace’s hand tightly, locking his eyes onto hers with deep, unconditional love, “Grace Torres is no longer a housekeeper. She is my fiancée, the mother of my child, and the co-chairman of the Cole Foundation.”

The plaza erupted into thunderous applause as federal marshals stepped up behind Senator Vance and Victoria, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around their wrists on live national television for their outstanding racketeering and extortion warrants!
Victoria shrieked pathetically as she was dragged away down the marble steps, her multi-billion-dollar ambition officially ending in total public humiliation.
