A Photograph Between Two Children

Chapter 07 - A Photograph Between Two Children
I sent Noah a photograph of Emma.
Not Ethan.
Me.
I asked Vanessa first.
Then I wrote a message simple enough for a nine-year-old.
Hi, Noah. I’m Grace. This is Emma. She has very tiny feet and already hates being cold. I think she’ll be happy to know she has a big brother whenever you’re ready.
I did not say family.
I did not say father.
I did not ask him for anything.
An hour later, Vanessa sent back a photograph.
Noah was holding her phone.
On the screen was Emma.
He was trying not to smile.
Ethan stood beside my bed when I opened it.
He saw the image.
His knees nearly gave out.
“That’s him.”
“Yes.”
“Can I—”
“No.”
He stopped.
I hated hurting him.
But Noah’s photograph was not mine to hand over emotionally.
“He didn’t send it to you,” I said.
Ethan nodded.
“You’re right.”
He walked to the window.
I watched him struggle with the fact that being a father did not automatically entitle him to a son.
The hospital discharged me two days later.
I did not go home with Ethan.
I went to Natalie’s house.
He did not argue.
That mattered too.
My mother-in-law called twelve times.
I answered once.
“Grace, I know you’re angry.”
“That is not why I left.”
“Then why?”
“Because I need space to decide whether my marriage can hold the truth.”
Margaret began crying.
“I am losing my son.”
I closed my eyes.
Even now, everything returned to her loss.
“You are experiencing consequences,” I said. “That is not the same as being abandoned.”
She hung up.
Three days later, Ethan met Noah for the first time.
Vanessa chose a public park.
Ethan asked me to come.
I said no.
That meeting did not belong to me.
He told me about it afterward.
Noah arrived carrying a baseball glove.
He did not shake Ethan’s hand.
He did not hug him.
He looked at Ethan and said, “You’re taller than I thought.”
Ethan almost laughed.
Then Noah asked the question he had been holding for years.
“Why didn’t you answer my mom?”
Ethan could have blamed his parents.
He could have said he was young.
He could have said he was confused.
Instead, he told the truth.
“I was angry, and I made a selfish decision.”
Noah asked, “Did you think I was fake?”
Ethan swallowed.
“I didn’t know you were real.”
“You could have asked.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because I was afraid the answer would hurt me.”
Noah looked at him for a long time.
Then he said, “So you let it hurt me instead.”
When Ethan told me that, he cried.
I did too.
Not because Noah had been cruel.
Because he had been exact.
At the end of the meeting, Ethan asked whether he could see him again.
Noah shrugged.
“Maybe.”
Then he walked away with Vanessa.
Ethan did not follow.
That night, I received another message from Vanessa.
Noah wants to meet Emma.
I smiled.
Then the second message appeared.
But he says Ethan cannot come.
I stared at the screen.

My husband had finally found his son.
And his son was asking for a family without him.
