Chapter 5

Laura Bennett had been born Laura Moretti.

That part was true.

Not Luca’s sister.

Not close cousin.

A distant branch.

Carlo’s second cousin.

Her father, Dominic Moretti, left Chicago young, changed surname to Morris, then Bennett after adoption by stepfather.

So yes, Moretti blood.

But distant enough to matter socially more than medically.

Why hide?

Laura wanted no family association.

She married David Bennett quietly.

The crest on wedding certificate came from private chapel owned by Moretti foundation.

Not secret mafia wedding.

Just family property.

Marcel had used truth dramatically.

Again.

Then inheritance?

Minimal.

Laura’s branch had no controlling rights.

So not money.

Why did Marcel bring it up?

To destabilize trust.

Make Anna doubt Luca.

Make Luca wonder whether Anna was planted.

Psychological.

Good.

Then Price uncovered Marcel’s actual objective.

Book Three contained names of public officials still active.

If released, Bellandi network collapses.

But he did not only want destruction.

He wanted one page removed.

Page 47.

Name:

MARCEL BELLANDI — INFORMANT AGREEMENT.

He had once been a government informant against his own father.

There.

His entire power rested on reputation for loyalty.

If rivals learned he informed, he was finished.

That was why he was desperate.

Not only crimes.

Identity.

Then Marco.

Why kidnap him?

Marco knew the agreement existed.

Carlo had kept a copy.

Marcel believed Marco knew location.

When Luca started asking about David Bennett, Marcel assumed Book Three found.

He grabbed Marco.

Then Luca’s wound.

At Pier Nine meeting, Marcel offered:

Give me ring, I give you Marco.

Luca refused.

Fight.

Gunshot graze.

Knuckles from one of Marcel’s men.

Then Luca ran to Anna because he thought ring might need to be hidden with person tied to Bennett file.

And because?

He admitted:

“Because I trusted you.”

I stared.

“Before telling me anything?”

“Yes.”

“That is not trust. That is using me as a vault.”

He accepted.

“You’re right.”

Good.

Then controlled operation.

Price proposed false copy of Book Three.

Trackable.

Meeting at Pier Nine.

No Anna or Luca physically in open.

Marcel demanded both.

Price used distance surveillance.

Luca insisted on appearing.

Compromise:

He goes with wire, no weapon, law enforcement control.

Anna does not.

I agreed.

Then Marcel changed location last minute.

Old ferry terminal.

Classic.

Price adapted.

Nico remained excluded due compromised device.

Good.

At 11:58 PM Luca walked into ferry terminal carrying case.

Marcel emerged.

Marco beside him.

Alive.

Hands tied.

Then Marcel said:

“Where’s Anna?”

Luca:

“Safe.”

Marcel:

“You never learn.”

Then another door opened.

And I walked in.

Luca turned, furious.

Price in earpiece swore.

I had not gone rogue.

Controlled decoy position.

Price approved because Marcel needed visual confirmation? Yes.

I stayed twenty meters away behind ballistic glass? Maybe too cinematic. Simpler: I appeared on video tablet feed. Better.

Price wheeled live video? Hmm.

Let's avoid unsafe hostage theatrics. Anna appears via secure video call on Luca’s phone, enough.

Marcel saw me on screen.

Satisfied.

Then:

“Anna, tell him to give me the book.”

I said:

“No.”

He smiled.

“Your father was smarter.”

“Maybe.”

Then:

“He knew when to disappear.”

I replied:

“He also knew when you were scared.”

Marcel’s face changed.

I held up page 47 digitally.

INFORMANT AGREEMENT.

He went pale.

There.

Price had leverage.

Not to blackmail.

To induce surrender? She warned it would be filed publicly if case proceeded? Can't threaten improper. Instead she says evidence already secured, killing Marco cannot erase it. Good.

I told him:

“It’s already with prosecutors.”

True.

“You can’t bury it by hurting anyone.”

His shoulders changed.

Plan collapsing.

Then one of his men panicked.

Gun raised.

Law enforcement moved.

No gunfire? Could be safe. Man surrendered when lasers? Let's keep minimal.

Marco dropped to floor.

Marcel tried side door.

Caught.

Alive.

Good.

Hostage rescued.

No heroic shootout.

Then the ledger.

Price took custody.

Public investigation.

Names redacted pending charges.

Luca did not keep.

Good.

Then Marcel charged with kidnapping, attempted murder? He arranged attack on David years ago maybe statute issues. Current abduction, extortion, conspiracy.

Page 47 became evidence of his old cooperation, not moral exoneration.

He had informed once and later committed crimes.

Both.

Then Nico.

Independent review of secret meeting.

He had not betrayed Marco.

But he had exposed credentials.

Stepped back from operations.

Again.

No one immune.

Then Anna and Luca.

We did not resume normal dating immediately.

Obviously.

I asked:

“Why did you really approach me four months ago?”

He answered fully.

He found my name in Carlo’s Bennett file.

He wanted to know if I had Book Three.

First dinner, strategic.

Second dinner, still partly.

Third dinner, not.

Fourth month, he had stopped searching my apartment? He never searched. Good.

He had never entered without me.

Never planted devices.

But he kept the reason secret.

I said:

“You should have told me.”

“Yes.”

“Would you?”

“If I could do it again?”

“Yes.”

“Before first date?”

He thought.

“Then it wouldn’t have been a date.”

Good.

At least honest.

Then:

“Would you still ask me?”

“Yes.”

I hated that answer because I liked it.

Then my father’s Canadian letter.

Final line:

If Luca is anything like Carlo, he will think silence is protection. Make him learn otherwise.

I showed Luca.

He read.

Then laughed once.

“Your father was rude.”

“He was right.”

“Yes.”

Then we started over.

Not from zero.

From truth.

Dinner.

No private room.

No security inside.

I asked what he did for living.

He said:

“Some legal things. Some things I’m trying to make legal.”

Fair.

He began disentangling Moretti business from criminal operations? We should keep story arc maybe reform. But user likes mafia romance. We can still show internal shift.

He turned Book Three over.

Closed illicit cash channels tied to Bellandi.

Moved legitimate companies under independent compliance.

Not overnight.

Not saintly.

He still had enemies.

But less secrecy.

Then one evening he came to my apartment.

Three knocks.

I froze.

Opened.

No blood.

No gun.

Pizza.

He held up box.

“Inside?”

I laughed.

“Now.”

That was better.

Page 47’s informant agreement was already copied to prosecutors before Marcel’s final meeting, making violence incapable of erasing it.

The controlled rescue plan treated Marco as a hostage rather than a Moretti asset, which changed who had authority over the operation.

Anna appeared only through secured video during the meeting, keeping her from becoming physical leverage.

Marcel’s men surrendered once law enforcement control became obvious, preventing the confrontation from becoming a family shootout.

Book Three’s original remained in government custody after the arrest and was never returned to Luca.
