Chapter 7

Elena Moretti did not look like a ghost.

That was what made it worse.

She looked healthy.

Older.

Composed.

A cream coat over black dress.

Hair silver at the temples.

The same blue eyes Luca had.

He stared.

No one spoke.

Elena opened her arms.

Luca did not move.

She lowered them.

Good.

“Luca.”

“You were dead.”

“Legally.”

Daniel whispered:

“I hate that word now.”

Elena almost smiled.

Then saw Sarah.

“You told him.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Luca laughed.

“Good?”

His voice cracked.

“You have been alive seven years.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Sarah was alive.”

“Yes.”

“Matteo.”

“Yes.”

“Salvatore.”

“Yes.”

His face hardened.

“Did you know Claire’s parents were alive?”

Elena looked at me.

“Yes.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

She stepped toward Luca.

He stepped back.

That hurt her.

Good.

“You don’t get to come back and act like information was love.”

Elena’s face fell.

“I know.”

“No. Everyone says that.”

She nodded.

“You’re right.”

He looked surprised.

Then angry again.

“Why?”

“Vale.”

“Better answer.”

She explained.

Seven years earlier, Elena discovered Arthur Vale had penetrated federal investigators.

People who tried to testify disappeared.

Records vanished.

Salvatore negotiated his own survival.

Elena chose witness protection outside official channels.

Thomas and Linda helped.

Sarah later joined.

Matteo after his disappearance.

A hidden network of people Luca mourned.

All trying to dismantle another network.

Without him.

Luca looked around.

“You built a second secret family and left me in the first one.”

Elena cried.

“Yes.”

That was the truth.

Matteo stepped closer.

“Mom.”

She looked at him.

He hugged her.

Luca turned away.

Not ready.

Fair.

I understood too well.

My mother stood beside me.

Our arms did not touch.

Not yet.

Elena looked at me.

“Claire.”

“No.”

She stopped.

“I’m not another reunion.”

“Understood.”

Good.

Then Daniel entered with phone.

“Vale’s board is moving.”

Luca turned.

“What?”

Vale Health filed emergency merger notice with Moretti Holdings.

No approval yet.

But they claimed wedding trust proxy gave Vanessa authority to consent.

Vanessa was in federal interview.

She had not signed merger.

So signature forged.

Again.

Claire’s frozen twelve percent blocked supermajority.

But if trust suspension lifted, Vale could proceed.

Arthur needed my shares because they were veto.

Elena nodded.

“That is why he targeted Bennett line.”

I looked at her.

“Did my grandfather actually own part of Moretti Holdings?”

“Yes.”

“Why was that erased?”

“Salvatore.”

Of course.

Elena continued.

“Moretti-Bennett Freight started together.”

Thomas’s family invested trucks.

Warehouses.

Routes.

Salvatore rewrote history after Linda married Thomas and left business.

The twelve percent was restitution.

I felt oddly calmer.

The shares were not a magical gift.

They had history.

My family built something too.

Luca said:

“Then Vale merger dies.”

Daniel shook head.

“Not necessarily.”

“What?”

“There’s one route.”

Emergency continuity vote.

If Luca declared unavailable due to active criminal threat, board may temporarily seat blood-family representative.

“Who?”

Daniel looked at Matteo.

Brother.

Matteo laughed.

“No.”

Elena said:

“That is what Vale wants.”

Matteo frowned.

“Me?”

“You were held by his people. They know your biometrics.”

“They can forge.”

“Yes.”

Luca looked at Daniel.

“Protect him.”

Matteo shook head.

“No.”

Luca turned.

“Not debating.”

“Yes, we are.”

“Matteo.”

His brother stepped closer.

“You do not get to turn protection into control just because Dad did.”

Silence.

That landed hard.

Luca nodded.

“You’re right.”

Small progress.

“What do you want?”

“To be part of plan.”

“Fine.”

Then Sarah said:

“Vale will go after Vanessa too.”

Luca looked at her.

“Why?”

“Her preliminary petition is still part of chain.”

If Vale forced Vanessa to validate, he could claim continuity.

Daniel called agents.

Vanessa had left federal interview twenty minutes earlier.

With counsel.

Name of counsel:

Vittorio Marcello’s junior partner.

Everyone swore.

She had not escaped.

She had been legally released.

Then vanished again.

Elena looked at Luca.

“She may still be trying to save Adrian.”

Likely.

Luca called Vanessa.

No answer.

Again.

Then she called him.

Breathing hard.

“Luca.”

“Where are you?”

“Vale Tower.”

Everyone froze.

“Why?”

“He has Adrian.”

“Again?”

“Yes.”

“Vanessa, leave.”

“I can’t.”

“Do not sign.”

“He says if I sign continuity acknowledgment, Adrian goes free.”

Luca closed eyes.

“Does he?”

“No.”

She knew now.

“Then why are you there?”

“To get Adrian out.”

“How?”

Silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“I brought copies of Marcello’s recordings.”

Daniel looked impressed.

Maybe.

Luca said:

“Send location.”

“I already did.”

He checked.

Yes.

She had learned.

No secret plan without information?

Not yet rule, but moving.

Elena said:

“We go.”

Luca looked at her.

“You stay.”

She almost argued.

Then stopped.

“Why?”

“Because I’m asking, not ordering.”

That surprised everyone.

“And because Vale thinks you’re dead.”

Elena nodded.

“Good.”

Luca looked at me.

“You stay too.”

I stared.

He sighed.

“Asking.”

“My shares are target.”

“Yes.”

“So I’m safer where?”

He thought.

“Here with Daniel.”

“Fine.”

I wanted to go.

But this was strategy, not exclusion.

Difference.

Matteo went with Luca and Sarah.

Daniel stayed with me, Linda, Elena.

At Vale Tower, Vanessa had used herself as bait.

Her hidden recorder streamed live.

Arthur Vale’s voice.

“You should have married him yesterday.”

“He would have read the trust.”

“You were supposed to prevent that.”

“I tried.”

I winced.

My wounds.

Vanessa’s choice.

Arthur continued.

“Claire Bennett complicated things.”

“Yes.”

“Thomas should have handled his daughter years ago.”

My father, listening from hospital recovery feed, said:

“Charming.”

Arthur said:

“Sign.”

Vanessa answered:

“Release Adrian first.”

“Sign.”

Then silence.

Paper.

Pen.

Daniel watched stream.

“She’s stalling.”

Luca entered building from service route.

Matteo another floor.

Sarah monitored cameras.

Vanessa said:

“Clause twelve is wrong.”

Arthur sounded annoyed.

“It is not.”

“It says Vale receives proxy only after board certification.”

“Yes.”

“Then why would I sign before certification?”

She was forcing him to explain conspiracy on recording.

Good.

Arthur said:

“Because certification is already arranged.”

There.

Who arranged?

“Judge Halpern.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Federal judge.

Corrupt.

Recorded.

Vanessa continued.

“And Luca’s medical declaration?”

“Dr. Kane signs.”

Recorded.

“And Claire?”

“Her shares will be invalidated.”

“How?”

“Bennett trust challenge.”

“By who?”

Arthur laughed.

“Her mother.”

I turned toward Linda.

She went white.

“What?”

Arthur continued on recording.

“Linda Bennett signed a renunciation twelve years ago.”

My mother whispered:

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Did you?”

“No.”

Arthur had forged it.

Or someone did.

Then alarm sounded in Vale Tower.

Luca had entered secure floor.

Arthur realized.

He grabbed Vanessa.

Gun.

Adrian behind glass room.

Matteo came through rear stair.

Arthur shouted.

Vanessa dropped to floor.

Luca moved.

Fight.

No clean heroics.

Arthur was older but had guards.

Matteo took one.

Luca another.

Sarah remotely unlocked Adrian’s room.

Vanessa crawled to him.

Arthur ran.

Elevator.

Daniel tracked.

But he had private helipad.

Of course.

He escaped by helicopter.

For now.

Vanessa and Adrian survived.

More evidence captured.

But Arthur still had Bennett renunciation document filed.

If court accepted, my twelve percent vanished.

Linda looked at me.

“I never signed.”

I believed her.

Maybe.

Then Elena said:

“I know who did.”

We turned.

“Who?”

She looked at Thomas’s hospital feed.

“Thomas.”

My father went still.

And did not deny it.

After the fight at Vale Tower, Vanessa sat on the curb beside an ambulance.

No gold gown now.

Someone had cut the fabric at the shoulder to treat a bruise.

Adrian slept inside the vehicle under sedation.

Luca stood several feet away.

Vanessa looked up.

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t think you would.”

“He was a hostage.”

She flinched.

Not for you.

He did not need to say it.

Then she looked at Sarah.

Sarah stood near the building entrance, alive and unmistakable.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“So she really is.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know?”

“No.”

Vanessa laughed weakly.

“At least one thing I didn’t know first.”

Luca said nothing.

She looked at him.

“I am sorry.”

“For which part?”

That hurt.

She deserved it.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“For sending Claire to the locker.”

“You intended her to find the note.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I needed to know whether Matteo had left evidence.”

“So you used Claire.”

“Yes.”

“And when she found it?”

“I panicked.”

“You pushed her into glass.”

“Yes.”

No excuse.

Good.

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“You understand that cooperation does not erase that.”

“Yes.”

“Adrian does not erase that.”

“Yes.”

“Marcello manipulating you does not erase that.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.”

Only then did Luca nod.

Not forgiveness.

Recognition of truth.

Vanessa looked toward Sarah again.

“Are you going back to her?”

“That is none of your business.”

Fair.

She almost smiled.

“Also deserved.”

Then the ambulance door closed.

Adrian was taken away.

Vanessa went with federal agents.

And Luca returned to the hospital, where his mother was waiting to explain seven years of silence.

The strange thing was that he looked less angry leaving Vanessa than he had entering Vale Tower.

Maybe because a lie admitted no longer had power to keep changing shape.

The next danger was different.

Arthur Vale had escaped.

My shares were still contested.

And Thomas had apparently forged my mother’s signature years earlier.

May you like

But at least the people in front of us had started telling the truth before being cornered.

That was new.
