Chapter 9 - THE HAPPY ENDING

Luca stared at the words written on the back of the photograph.
Trust the maid.
He slowly looked up at me.
"She knew," Luca whispered. "Three years ago, Caroline knew that someday, Vanessa would try to replace her. She knew Vanessa would bring her own staff into the house."
I stepped closer, my mind racing. "But how could she know it would be me?"
"She didn't know it would be you," my mother said softly, stepping onto the plane behind me. "She knew it would be a Sullivan."
We all turned to my mother.
She walked down the aisle, her hands clasped together. "When Caroline gave me those ledgers to hide, she made me promise one thing. If anything ever happened to her, and if Vanessa ever got close to Luca... I had to find a way to put someone inside the house to protect Benjamin."
My mouth fell open. "Mom? You... you arranged for me to work there?"
"I didn't arrange it," my mother smiled through her tears. "I just made sure Vanessa found my resume. I knew Vanessa’s vanity wouldn't allow her to hire an older woman with a bad back. She would want someone young, someone she thought she could easily intimidate and control."
"So she hired my daughter instead," my mother finished. "Vanessa thought she was trapping you, Claire. But she was actually bringing the only person who would truly love Benjamin into his home."
Luca looked at my mother with a profound, staggering respect.
Then, he looked down at Benjamin.
"Ben," Luca said gently. "Do you still want to sleep with Mommy's picture beside your bed?"
Benjamin nodded eagerly. "Yes, please."
"Then let's go home and put it right back where it belongs."
The ride back to the estate felt different. The oppressive darkness that had hung over the Moretti family for three years was gone. The air felt lighter.
When we walked through the front doors of the mansion, the house was quiet. The guests were long gone. The remnants of the ruined engagement party had been cleared away by Luca's men.
Benjamin yawned, rubbing his eyes.
"Time for bed, little man," Luca said, scooping him up.
"Can Miss Claire tuck me in?" Benjamin asked sleepily.
Luca smiled. A real, genuine smile that made his handsome face look years younger. "Of course she can."
Upstairs, I tucked Benjamin into his heavy quilt. I took the photograph of his mother and placed it securely on the nightstand right next to him.
"There she is," I whispered. "Watching over you."
Benjamin reached out and grabbed my hand. "Miss Claire?"
"Yes, Ben?"
"Are you going to leave, too?"
I felt a lump in my throat. I didn't know what my place was anymore. I was a maid who had just helped take down a mafia boss's enemies.
But before I could answer, a deep voice spoke from the doorway.
"She's not going anywhere."
Luca stepped into the room. He walked over to the bed and looked down at his son.
"Miss Claire isn't a maid anymore, Ben," Luca said softly. "She's going to be your new tutor. And she and her mother are going to move into the guest cottage out back. So she will always be right here."
Benjamin's face lit up with pure joy. "Really?"
"Really," I said, tears pricking my eyes.
"Goodnight, sweetie."
"Goodnight, Miss Claire. Goodnight, Daddy."
Luca and I walked out into the hallway, leaving the door cracked open so the light from the hall could spill in.
I turned to Luca. "Mr. Moretti... you didn't have to do that. The guest cottage? A tutor position?"
"Claire," Luca said, stepping closer to me. His presence was overwhelming, a mix of power and quiet vulnerability. "You saved my son. You saved me from making the biggest mistake of my life. You are family now."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out something shiny.
It was a beautiful, delicate silver bracelet.
"I found this in Caroline's jewelry box," Luca said quietly. "It belonged to her grandmother. She wanted to give it to the woman who helped her. Your mother."
He handed it to me.
"But I think," Luca added, his eyes dropping to my lips for a fraction of a second before meeting my eyes again, "Caroline would be very happy if you wore it."
I took the bracelet. My fingers brushed against his, sending a jolt of electricity up my arm.
"Thank you, Luca," I whispered.
He smiled. "Answer one question for me, Claire."
"Anything."
"Are you going to make me eat cold potatoes for the rest of my life?"
I laughed, the sound bubbling up from my chest, light and free. "Only if you threaten to fire me."
As we stood together in the quiet hallway, the ghosts of the past finally put to rest, I knew my life would never be the same.
I had walked into this house as a maid trying to pay her mother's rent.
I was staying as the woman who put a broken family back together.
And as I looked at the man standing in front of me, I knew this wasn't the end of our story.
May you like
It was only the beginning.
