Chapter 8

Daniel did not run.

That almost made it worse.

He stood beside the command van while police officers turned toward him, and he slowly raised both hands away from his body.

Luca stared at the man who had been his attorney for twelve years.

“No,” he said.

Daniel looked exhausted.

“It is not what Vanessa wants you to think.”

Vanessa laughed from beside the patrol car.

“That sentence again.”

Sergeant Ruiz handed her to another officer.

“Put her in the car.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“You need me.”

“No. I need you quiet.”

The door shut on her.

Ruiz turned to Thomas.

“Mr. Dawson, explain what you mean.”

My father looked at me first.

His eyes were full of shame.

“After I found the ledger, Raffaele Moretti realized Bellini knew I had it. He believed Vincent would have me killed.”

Vincent Bellini, sitting cuffed on the curb, snapped, “That is a lie.”

Ruiz pointed at him.

“You’ll get your turn.”

Dad continued.

“Raffaele arranged a staged death. A burned vehicle. A false identification. A funeral home director who owed him money.”

My stomach turned.

“You let Mom identify a body that wasn’t yours?”

“No. She never saw the body.”

“Neither did we.”

“I know.”

His voice broke.

“I know what I did to you.”

“Why didn’t you come back after Raffaele died?”

He looked at Daniel.

“Because Daniel told me the danger wasn’t over.”

Luca stepped toward Daniel.

“You knew Thomas was alive.”

“Yes.”

“For four years.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me spend money searching for him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Because your father made me promise.”

Luca laughed once, bitterly.

“My father is dead.”

“And promises do not die automatically.”

“People do.”

Daniel flinched.

Luca pointed toward Thomas.

“His wife died believing her husband had vanished into a grave.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I know.”

“Claire and Emily mourned him.”

“I know.”

“You lied to me every day.”

“Yes.”

“Stop saying yes like it makes you noble.”

Daniel finally raised his voice.

“I was keeping him alive!”

The street went quiet.

He breathed hard.

“Vincent Bellini had people looking for Thomas. Raffaele died. Matteo was tangled in the old agreement. You were trying to clean the company without understanding what your father had hidden. If I brought Thomas back, Bellini would have known the ledger survived.”

Vincent Bellini shouted from the curb, “I did not order Dawson killed.”

Thomas looked at him.

“You ordered people to find me.”

“To recover stolen records.”

“You threatened my family.”

Vincent’s face hardened.

“I threatened Raffaele’s reputation.”

Ruiz rubbed her forehead.

“Wonderful. Everyone here has a different crime they’d like to minimize.”

I looked at my father.

“Why now?”

“What?”

“Why come out now?”

He hesitated.

“Because the payments changed.”

“What payments?”

“The old consulting transfers. For years they followed the same route. Moretti subsidiary to Bellini shell company, then out to legal and labor intermediaries.”

“Blackmail.”

“Yes.”

“But six months ago, money started moving backward.”

Luca frowned.

“Backward?”

“Bellini entities began paying accounts controlled by someone inside Moretti Hospitality.”

Daniel went still.

“Who?”

Thomas looked at Luca.

“I thought Matteo.”

“And?”

“I was wrong.”

My father took a folded paper from inside the evidence bag an officer had returned with his belongings. Ruiz stopped him, checked it, then allowed him to show us.

It was a list of wire transfers.

Recipient entity: M9 Strategic Advisory.

Luca stared.

“I’ve never heard of it.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“I have.”

Everyone looked at him.

“It was formed by Elaine Porter.”

The board member.

The woman Luca had planned to call to freeze authority.

His face hardened.

“Elaine controls one of the emergency votes.”

Thomas nodded.

“And she has received twelve million dollars through M9 in six months.”

Ruiz’s eyes sharpened.

“From Bellini?”

“From three Bellini-connected entities.”

Luca looked toward the patrol car holding Vanessa.

“She bought a board member.”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

“What do you mean?”

“I don’t think Vanessa had access to this structure until recently.”

“Then Vincent?”

Vincent laughed bitterly.

“If I were paying twelve million dollars to steal Moretti Hospitality, I would not be sitting in handcuffs outside my own abandoned hotel.”

Unfortunately, that made sense.

“Then who?” I asked.

Thomas looked at Matteo’s name written in one of the transfer notes.

“Someone who wanted both families blaming each other.”

A cold silence settled over us.

Luca took out his phone.

“Call the hospital.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Why?”

“Matteo.”

The call connected to security at the private hospital where Matteo had been taken.

After thirty seconds, Luca’s expression changed.

“What do you mean he checked out?”

My stomach dropped.

Daniel swore.

Luca listened.

“Who signed the discharge?”

A pause.

Then he whispered, “Elaine.”

Ruiz immediately called for units.

I looked at my father.

“Would Matteo go with her willingly?”

Dad nodded slowly.

“If he still believes Elaine was helping protect the company, yes.”

Luca ended the call.

“Elaine has been on our board for fourteen years. She was my father’s closest financial adviser.”

Thomas looked at him.

“Then she knew everything.”

Harbor 9.

The Bellini arrangement.

The hidden payments.

My father.

All of it.

Ruiz opened the patrol car door and brought Vanessa back out.

Vanessa looked annoyed.

“What now?”

“Elaine Porter.”

For the first time that night, Vanessa’s confidence vanished.

She looked at Luca.

Then at her father.

Vincent stood despite the officer beside him.

“What about Elaine?”

Ruiz said, “Twelve million dollars from Bellini-connected accounts went to her shell company.”

Vincent’s face went white.

“I never authorized that.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“Dad?”

“I did not authorize it.”

Luca watched them.

Vanessa turned to Ruiz.

“Those accounts are controlled by our family office.”

“Who has signing authority?”

“My father. Me. Chief financial officer.”

“And?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“One outside trustee.”

“Name.”

She closed her eyes.

“Elaine Porter.”

Luca swore.

It became clear all at once.

Elaine had access to both families.

She could move Bellini money.

She could influence Moretti votes.

She knew the old blackmail structure.

She could make each side believe the other was attacking.

“What does she want?” I asked.

Thomas answered softly.

“The refinancing.”

Everyone looked at him.

“The three-point-eight-billion-dollar refinancing creates a short window when control rights, lender approvals, and development assets can be reorganized. If Luca is removed, Matteo takes over. If Matteo is compromised by the old agreements, Elaine controls him. If Vanessa marries Luca, Bellini gains an alternate path. No matter which route succeeds, Elaine is positioned in the middle.”

Daniel stared at the transfer sheet.

“She wasn’t buying one board vote.”

“She was buying the crisis.”

Luca looked toward the dark hotel.

“And Vanessa?”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I knew about the incapacity plan.”

Vincent turned on her.

“You what?”

She ignored him.

“Elaine told me Luca was preparing to expose the Harbor payments and destroy both families. She said if I married him first, I could protect Bellini interests.”

“So you drafted the control clause,” Luca said.

“Yes.”

“You tried to frame Claire.”

Vanessa looked at me.

Her voice became quieter.

“Yes.”

“You kidnapped Thomas.”

“No.”

Ruiz raised an eyebrow.

“You were on camera.”

“I helped move him. I thought Elaine wanted to force a document exchange. I didn’t know she planned to kill him.”

My father stared at her.

“She told the man guarding me to make it look like I ran again.”

Vanessa’s face drained.

“I didn’t hear that.”

“Maybe,” I said, “you should stop using that sentence.”

She looked at me.

For once she had nothing to say.

Luca’s phone buzzed.

A board notification.

Emergency meeting moved forward.

2:30 a.m.

Remote and in person.

Vote on temporary removal of Luca Moretti.

Attached note: Acting chair Elaine Porter presiding.

Luca stared at the screen.

“She’s doing it now.”

Daniel looked at the time.

“We have forty-seven minutes.”

Ruiz said, “Then don’t go.”

Luca frowned.

“What?”

“She wants you focused on the board. Let the board happen. We find Matteo.”

“If I lose control, Elaine gets access to company systems.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not if we freeze access before the vote.”

“Can we?”

“If every bank, lender, and system administrator receives notice of suspected fraud and criminal investigation, yes.”

Luca looked at Ruiz.

“Will you confirm there is an active investigation?”

“I’ll confirm facts I’m authorized to confirm.”

“That’s enough.”

He turned to Daniel.

“Do it.”

Daniel hesitated.

“You’re authorizing us to tell lenders the board itself may be compromised.”

“Yes.”

“It could tank the refinancing.”

“I know.”

“It could drop the company valuation by hundreds of millions tomorrow.”

“I know.”

Thomas watched him closely.

Then nodded once.

For the first time, something in my father’s expression softened toward Luca.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Emily.

She was safe with police.

I exhaled.

Then another message appeared.

Not from Emily.

From Matteo’s number.

CLAIRE, ELAINE SAYS YOUR FATHER IS LYING. LUCA IS GOING TO DESTROY THE COMPANY. I NEED THE LEDGER. COME ALONE TO MORETTI TOWER. IF YOU BRING POLICE, SHE SAYS SHE’LL RELEASE HARBOR 9 BEFORE LUCA CAN EXPLAIN IT.

I stared at the screen.

Luca read over my shoulder.

“That isn’t Matteo talking.”

“No.”

My father looked at the message.

“But he may have sent it.”

Ruiz immediately began planning.

I looked toward the Manhattan skyline.

Moretti Tower stood forty blocks away.

The board meeting would happen there.

Elaine had Matteo.

She wanted the ledger.

And suddenly I understood why.

“The ledger doesn’t only prove Bellini blackmail,” I said.

Dad looked at me.

“What?”

“You said patterns don’t lie.”

He nodded.

“What if Elaine’s payments started years earlier under another name?”

Thomas went still.

I continued.

“What if she’s in the old ledger too?”

My father’s face changed.

“Yes,” he whispered.

Luca looked at him.

“Is she?”

Thomas slowly nodded.

“I never realized what the initials meant.”

“What initials?”

May you like

He answered.

“E.P.”
