Chapter 8

Nobody spoke.

Not for a long time.

The television continued to hiss with static.

I stared at my mother.

Arthur Vale.

My biological father.

The man who had threatened me when I was twelve.

The man who had helped fake my mother’s death.

The man who attacked me in Rose’s cottage.

Vanessa stood at the bottom of the stairs.

Her face had gone completely blank.

“No.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Vanessa.”

“No.”

“Please.”

Vanessa stepped backward.

“No.”

I should have felt something toward her.

Sister.

The word existed.

The feeling did not.

All I could think was that she had chased me through a garden less than eight hours earlier.

That she had lied while I bled beside Luca’s table.

That now somehow we shared blood.

Vanessa looked at me.

Her eyes filled.

“You knew?”

“No.”

She turned to Claire.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Since before Anna was born.”

Vanessa laughed.

It sounded close to hysteria.

“Of course.”

Luca moved toward her.

She held up one hand.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

Claire came down the final stair.

“I’m sorry.”

Vanessa rounded on her.

“You slept with my father.”

The words cracked through the cellar.

Claire flinched.

“Yes.”

“While he was married?”

“Yes.”

“My mother was alive.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“Did Isabella know?”

“No.”

“Rose?”

“Eventually.”

“Giovanni?”

Claire looked toward the television.

“He knew everything.”

Vanessa laughed again.

“Apparently.”

I finally found my voice.

“Did Thomas know?”

Claire turned toward me.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt more than I expected.

“He raised me knowing?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he loved you.”

“Was he your husband before or after Arthur?”

“After.”

“Did Arthur know I was his daughter?”

Claire looked down.

“Yes.”

I felt sick.

“He threatened me with photographs.”

“Yes.”

“His own daughter.”

“He never intended to hurt you.”

I stared at her.

“You cannot possibly know that.”

“You’re right.”

Good.

One honest sentence.

Luca switched off the television.

The room became quieter.

He looked at Claire.

“My father made that video recently.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“He knew Anna survived.”

“Not until this week.”

“What happened this week?”

Claire hesitated.

“Rose died.”

“Three months ago.”

“Yes.”

“That isn’t this week.”

“The probate inventory was finalized this week.”

Matteo understood first.

“The cottage.”

Claire nodded.

“Rose left a coded reference to Anna in a sealed legal file.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“Who saw it?”

“Arthur.”

“Why?”

“He was still listed as a backup trustee under an old document.”

Vanessa whispered, “He found Anna.”

“Yes.”

“And told Giovanni.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Claire.

“Why didn’t you warn me?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“The agency.”

I frowned.

“Rose hired me through Hartley.”

“Because I asked her to.”

“What?”

“Three years ago.”

I stared.

“You arranged for me to work here?”

“I asked Rose to watch you.”

Anger surged again.

“You had someone watch me for three years?”

“Protect you.”

“You keep using that word.”

Claire’s shoulders sagged.

“I know.”

“No. Stop saying that.”

Luca stepped between us slightly.

Not blocking.

Just anchoring the room.

Matteo moved through the file cabinets.

“Guys.”

Nobody answered.

“Guys.”

He pulled out a folder.

“Maybe this matters.”

Luca took it.

The label read:

VALE, ARTHUR — PERSONAL.

Vanessa looked sick.

“Open it.”

Inside were bank statements.

Photographs.

Travel records.

And DNA results.

My name.

Anna Bennett.

Vanessa Vale.

Arthur Vale.

My breath stopped.

The test was dated fourteen years ago.

Arthur had tested our relationship without either of us knowing.

Probability of half-sibling relationship:

99.94%.

Vanessa sat down on a crate.

“He knew.”

Claire nodded.

“He always knew.”

Vanessa covered her face.

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

“Because you were useful separately.”

Vanessa looked up.

“What does that mean?”

Claire’s expression turned hard.

“Arthur needed you close to Luca.”

“And Anna?”

“Hidden.”

“Why?”

“Because Anna was leverage against me.”

I felt my stomach twist.

Luca flipped through more pages.

“Arthur paid Hartley Staffing.”

I stared.

“What?”

He held up a statement.

Monthly payments.

For three years.

“Rose didn’t just watch you.”

Claire’s face changed.

“What?”

Luca looked at her.

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

Matteo took the document.

“Arthur financed the placement.”

Vanessa stood.

“Why would he put Anna in Luca’s house?”

Nobody answered.

Then I understood.

“The key.”

Claire looked at me.

“What?”

“He needed me to find the key.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

“Rose would only give it to you.”

“Yes.”

“He couldn’t search the cottage without drawing attention.”

“Until tonight.”

Matteo swore.

“Arthur placed Anna here so Rose would eventually hand her 314.”

My mother looked horrified.

“I asked Rose to bring Anna close because I thought the estate was safe.”

Luca gave a bitter laugh.

“Safe.”

Claire looked at him.

“I did not know Arthur controlled the agency.”

Vanessa whispered, “He controlled everything around us.”

Luca shook his head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

“He wants us to believe that.”

Vanessa frowned.

“What?”

“If Arthur controlled everything, why is my father making videos?”

Silence.

Luca continued.

“Why did Giovanni lead us here? Why reveal Anna’s paternity?”

Claire’s face tightened.

“Because Giovanni wants Arthur exposed.”

“Why?”

“They stopped working together years ago.”

“What happened?”

“I don’t know.”

“You spoke to my father three weeks ago.”

“Once.”

“What did he say?”

Claire hesitated.

“Tell me.”

“He said Arthur stole something.”

“The journal?”

“No.”

“What?”

“A company.”

Luca frowned.

“What company?”

“Moretti Maritime.”

Matteo’s expression changed.

“That company was dissolved fifteen years ago.”

Claire nodded.

“On paper.”

Luca turned.

“Matteo?”

“Moretti Maritime owned dock leases, freight rights, bonded warehouses. Your mother liquidated it.”

“Apparently not.”

Vanessa walked toward the file cabinets.

“My father used shipping entities.”

Luca looked at her.

“For what?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know everything.”

“Try.”

“Private transport. Cash. Documents.”

“People?”

Vanessa went pale.

“I never saw evidence of that.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“No. I don’t know.”

Matteo pulled another folder.

“Found Maritime.”

He opened it.

Corporate charts.

Offshore companies.

Ports.

Montreal.

Savannah.

New York.

Zurich.

All connected.

One current company sat at the center.

BLUE HARBOR LOGISTICS.

Luca froze.

“That’s one of ours.”

Matteo stared.

“What?”

“I acquired Blue Harbor two years ago.”

“From whom?”

Luca’s face hardened.

“A private equity group.”

Claire whispered, “Arthur.”

The entire room changed.

Luca had unknowingly bought back a piece of his father’s hidden network.

Vanessa understood.

“My father wanted you to acquire it.”

“Why?”

“To move the infrastructure back under the Moretti name.”

Luca looked furious.

“I ran compliance.”

“On the visible company.”

Matteo flipped pages.

“There are dormant subsidiaries.”

“How many?”

“Twelve.”

Luca took the folder.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

One subsidiary:

ST. ROSE FREIGHT SERVICES.

I whispered, “Rose.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Isabella named shell companies after saints and family members.”

“Why?”

“So she could remember which ones were safe.”

Luca’s finger moved down the page.

ST. ROSE was marked in green.

Another:

ST. VINCENT HOLDINGS.

Green.

Then:

BELLINI STORAGE.

Green.

One entity was marked red.

VALE INTERNATIONAL TRUST.

Beside it:

DO NOT TRANSFER.

Matteo exhaled.

“This is a map.”

“To what?”

I asked.

Luca looked at the microfilm key in my hand.

“Probably the money.”

Claire shook her head.

“Not just money.”

“What else?”

“The evidence.”

The cellar lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went dark.

Luca swore.

Emergency flashlights came on.

A voice sounded from above.

Arthur.

“Claire.”

Vanessa went rigid.

My mother closed her eyes.

“Arthur.”

Footsteps descended slowly.

He appeared on the stairs.

Gray hair.

Scar near his mouth.

Dark coat.

No gun visible.

Security officers raised weapons.

Arthur lifted both hands.

“I came alone.”

Luca moved in front of me.

“You attacked her.”

Arthur looked at my bruised face.

Regret crossed his expression.

“I grabbed her.”

“You chased her.”

“That was Vanessa.”

Vanessa flinched.

Arthur looked at her.

“Hello, sweetheart.”

“Don’t.”

Then he looked at me.

My biological father looked at me.

Not as a stranger.

Not now.

As if he had been doing it from a distance for years.

“Anna.”

I felt nothing warm.

Only cold.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“All my life?”

“Yes.”

“And you let me think you were nobody.”

“I needed you invisible.”

“You sound exactly like her.”

I pointed to Claire.

“Everything is protection. Everything is for me. Everybody gets to lie.”

Arthur’s mouth tightened.

“I deserved that.”

“You deserve worse.”

Luca spoke.

“Why are you here?”

Arthur looked at him.

“Because Giovanni is coming.”

Claire went white.

“When?”

Arthur checked his watch.

“Soon.”

Matteo raised his weapon slightly.

“How soon?”

Arthur smiled without humor.

“You think those gates opened for you?”

Nobody moved.

Arthur looked at Luca.

“Your father owns the property again.”

Vanessa whispered, “You sold it.”

“I sold it to him.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

“Why?”

“To make him believe I was surrendering.”

Luca stepped closer.

“What does he want?”

Arthur looked at Anna.

“The key.”

I closed my fist around it.

“And if he gets it?”

“He destroys the microfilm.”

“Then why not destroy the journal years ago?”

“He couldn’t find the key.”

“Rose had it.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you take it from her?”

Arthur looked at Vanessa.

“I tried.”

Vanessa stared.

“When?”

“Twelve years ago.”

The photograph.

Young Vanessa behind Isabella and Rose.

Her face changed.

“You brought me here.”

“Yes.”

“You told me we were visiting Aunt Rose.”

“She wasn’t your aunt.”

“You used me to search.”

“Yes.”

Tears rose in Vanessa’s eyes.

“That’s why Isabella hated me.”

“She thought you knew.”

“I was nineteen!”

“I know.”

“Did you ever care what you did to me?”

Arthur’s face cracked.

For the first time, he looked old.

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

“Because Giovanni threatened both of you.”

Both.

Vanessa looked at me.

Arthur continued.

“He knew I had another daughter. He did not know who.”

My stomach tightened.

“So you kept us apart.”

“Yes.”

“Until you put me in Luca’s house.”

“I did not.”

Arthur’s voice sharpened.

“I did not arrange your job.”

Claire stared.

“The payments.”

“Were protection payments to Hartley.”

Luca frowned.

“From what?”

“From telling Giovanni Anna existed.”

The room went silent.

Arthur pointed at the files.

“You are reading exactly what Giovanni wanted you to read.”

Luca looked at the folder.

Arthur stepped closer.

“Those records are curated. Some true. Some false.”

“How do we know which?”

“You don’t.”

“Convenient.”

“Yes.”

Arthur looked toward the ceiling.

“That is how Giovanni survives.”

A sound rumbled outside.

Engines.

Several.

Security voices crackled over radios.

“Vehicles approaching.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“He’s here.”

Luca’s face went hard.

“How many?”

Matteo listened to his earpiece.

“Five SUVs.”

Claire grabbed my hand.

“We need to leave.”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if we run, he gets the cellar.”

“What’s here?”

Arthur looked at me.

“The only thing more valuable than the journal.”

“What?”

He walked to the Saint Vincent statue built into the cellar wall.

Pressed the base.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small wooden box.

Arthur lifted it.

Opened the lid.

A silver revolver.

One spent bullet casing.

And an evidence tag from twenty years ago.

Luca stared.

Arthur’s voice dropped.

“The gun that killed Daniel Moretti.”

Luca went still.

“My uncle Daniel drowned.”

Arthur looked at him.

“No.”

“He was shot.”

By whom?”

Arthur’s eyes moved toward the stairs.

Then footsteps sounded above us.

Slow.

Confident.

A man’s voice called down.

“By me.”

Luca stopped breathing.

May you like

Giovanni Moretti stepped into the cellar.

Alive.
