Chapter 2

Anna did not go to the Moretti estate.

Sofia’s note had been clear.

DO NOT BRING THEM TO THE ESTATE.

Luca hated following instructions from a dead man.

He hated more that Carlo might have written the warning for a reason.

Mara Quinn arrived within the hour.

Former federal investigator.

Independent.

No family loyalty.

She read the Sofia file without comment.

Then looked at Nico.

“You waited eleven years to mention seeing her alive?”

Nico nodded.

“Carlo threatened the operation.”

“Did you verify there was an operation?”

“I saw federal credentials.”

“Real?”

“I thought so.”

Mara gave him a tired look.

“That is not verification.”

Good.

Anna was placed with a child advocate in a secured apartment controlled by Mara’s firm.

Luca stayed nearby.

Not in the same room unless Anna wanted.

She wanted.

Children make their own judgments quickly.

She sat at a kitchen table drinking hot chocolate while Mara asked simple questions.

No interrogation.

Drawings.

Maps.

Colors.

The “house with no windows” had three floors.

Anna’s room upstairs.

Kitchen in middle.

Basement forbidden.

A metal door.

A hallway that smelled “like swimming pools.”

Chlorine.

There were trains at night.

Church with red door within walking distance.

One bell.

No playground.

That narrowed geography.

Industrial corridor near rail and an old church.

Then the gray-haired man.

Anna called him “Mr. Daniel.”

Daniel Hart.

Good.

He visited every few months.

Sometimes friendly.

Sometimes angry.

Sofia hated him.

But she also opened the door for him.

Complicated.

Then another person.

A woman named Ruth.

Cook.

Caretaker.

She disappeared three weeks ago.

After that, Sofia became frightened.

Then men arrived.

Then escape.

How?

Sofia took Anna through basement.

The forbidden basement.

There was a tunnel.

Not long.

Led to a storm drain behind tracks.

Sofia had known it all along.

Which meant the house had been selected partly for escape routes.

Protective site.

Then why stay twelve years?

Mara asked carefully:

“Did your mom ever want to leave before?”

Anna nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t she?”

“She said the bad people thought she was dead.”

“Who were the bad people?”

Anna shrugged.

“Men with blue folders.”

Blue folders.

Not Bellini thugs.

Maybe investigators.

Maybe lawyers.

Then Sofia’s alias.

Mara Vale.

Interesting surname.

Same as Hart & Vale Consulting.

Daniel Hart and Mara Vale.

A joint firm.

Was Sofia’s alias constructed from their business?

Or was the firm named after the cover identity?

Mara Quinn searched corporate records.

Hart & Vale formed twelve years ago.

Three months after Sofia’s explosion.

Business:

risk consulting,

witness relocation,

corporate investigations.

Clients:

Moretti Holdings.

Bellini Maritime.

Federal subcontractors.

Too convenient.

Then D. Hart’s history.

Daniel Hart had been an Assistant U.S. Attorney.

He resigned abruptly eleven years ago after misconduct allegations.

Never charged.

The allegation:

unauthorized handling of a protected witness.

Name sealed.

Could have been Sofia.

Then Carlo Moretti paid Hart & Vale for eleven years.

Monthly.

“Protective consulting.”

Even after Carlo died, payments continued automatically through a trust.

So someone had financed Sofia’s hidden life.

Carlo.

Maybe protection was real.

Then why would Hart hit her?

Control can begin as protection.

Mara said that.

Luca understood too well.

Then the pendant.

Mara examined it.

No electronics.

No key.

No hidden data.

Just gold.

L.M.

A family token.

Sofia had kept it because it proved personal connection to Luca.

Anyone could fake a photograph.

Harder to fake a dented pendant Luca remembered giving her.

Then the tiny photograph inside.

Printed twelve years ago.

Luca and Sofia.

On back, beneath fold, a second line almost invisible:

BLUE BOOK / CHAPTER 9.

Mara looked at Luca.

“Blue Book?”

He knew.

Carlo kept private notebooks.

Black for money.

May you like

Red for security.

Blue for favors owed and favors given.
