Chapter 5

Five years after the red-dragon vase shattered, Nora no longer worked in private service.
She was director of collections operations at the conservation company.
She and Luca had been together four years.
Then married.
Small ceremony.
Independent prenup.
Separate counsel.
Nora kept her career.
No Moretti board role.
No household employment.
Good.
The red-dragon vase was not at the wedding.
No symbolism.
No joke about breaking things.
Good.
Camille did not attend.
No drama.
Then married life became ordinary.
Luca sometimes overreacted when Nora moved large objects.
One afternoon she carried a floor lamp.
He stood.
She stared.
He sat back down.
“Sorry.”
Good.
Fear can become control.
Then Project Meridian records.
Archive review complete.
Relevant business documents retained.
Camille’s personal letters restricted.
Carlo’s family correspondence mostly private.
Antonio’s warning letter:
restricted to family archive for now.
Good.
Not every dramatic envelope belongs in public exhibit.
Then one article called Camille:
THE WOMAN ANTONIO PAID TO DISAPPEAR.
Misleading.
He paid costs and compensation related to renunciation of nominee role.
Correction.
Good.
Then another:
PAID TO STAY AWAY FROM LUCA.
Partly wrong.
The confidentiality arrangement restricted disclosure and contact around business matters, but the documented payment was not a romance payoff.
Correction.
Good.
Then Camille completed civil obligations.
Worked in communications outside Moretti/Bellini shared vendors.
Could she rebuild career?
Yes.
No permanent exile.
Then Luca and Camille eventually had one mediated meeting.
Neutral office.
Camille said:
“I should have told you before we became serious.”
Luca answered:
“Yes.”
Then:
“I was afraid the story would become that my father sent me.”
Luca said:
“He encouraged you to attend.”
“Yes.”
“That’s not the same as sending you to date me.”
“No.”
Good.
Then:
“Did you go because of me?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Did you stay because of the old business?”
“No.”
Pause.
“I stayed because I loved you.”
Luca believed her.
That did not restore engagement.
Good.
Then Nora’s company faced a difficult conservation choice.
A huge ceramic urn had severe internal cracking.
Owner wanted it displayed high on pedestal.
Conservator said:
unsafe.
Owner objected.
Display changed.
Good.
No one held it up by hand.
Then annual training used phrase:
people before objects.
Nora liked it.
But later revised:
people first, then objects through proper systems.
Good.
Objects still matter.
Then household staff housing.
Separate leases.
One employee left job.
Thirty-day housing transition.
Good.
Then another was terminated for theft after evidence review.
Housing transition still applied unless safety emergency.
Good.
Employment outcome ≠ immediate homelessness.
Then marriage.
Nora’s prenup:
no automatic access to Luca’s safes, archives, trusts, security systems, staff files.
Good.
Luca’s marriage:
no authority over Nora’s employer or museum collections.
Good.
Intimacy ≠ office.
Then one vendor addressed Nora:
“Mrs. Moretti can approve.”
She answered:
“No.”
Good.
Then Luca’s assistant accidentally copied Nora on an archive-access request.
She asked to be removed.
Good.
Then the red-dragon vase moved to a climate-controlled gallery.
Annual inspection.
No hidden code.
No private legend plaque.
Good.
Then one child visitor asked why cracks were visible.
Guide answered:
because it was repaired after a fall.
Enough.
No blood story.
Then old safe.
Removed?
No.
Still in grandfather’s study.
Modern lock installed.
Inside:
ordinary family documents.
Good.
A safe can remain a safe.
Then one year Luca forgot his own secondary authentication token.
Security refused access until reset.
He laughed.
Good.
No owner override.
Then Nora asked:
“Does that bother you?”
“No.”
Then:
“It means it works.”
Good.
The fifth correction was that safer systems should eventually become boring enough that even the owner gets inconvenienced by them without treating that inconvenience as disrespect.
Nora and Luca’s prenup made clear marriage did not grant her archive, staff, trust, security, or procurement authority. Intimacy was not an operating role.
The museum loan agreement for the vase required periodic review rather than permanent display, so future trustees could reconsider without treating one crisis as a forever mandate.
