Chapter 4

Teresa Moretti was convicted.

No dramatic escape.

No gunfight.

A courtroom.

Documents.

Witnesses.

Survivors.

Giovanni pled guilty to limited fraud tied to his false identities and cooperation deal.

He accepted consequences.

Good.

Vanessa pled guilty to assaulting me.

She did not hide behind Teresa.

“My fear explains why I obeyed. It does not explain why I chose violence.”

Good.

Probation.

Restitution.

Treatment.

Some people thought too light.

Others too harsh.

Not my job.

Mrs. Moretti testified from a wheelchair.

She admitted hiring me under false pretenses.

Not criminal.

Still wrong.

The judge asked why.

“To protect her.”

I flinched.

Then Mrs. Moretti corrected herself.

“No. I thought I was protecting her. I was also controlling what she knew.”

Better.

That distinction mattered.

Luca opened Moretti Shipping records to external audit.

The company had unknowingly continued some old contracts connected to relocation agencies.

No current illegal child moves found.

Good.

But governance changed anyway.

No private family charities moving people.

Independent legal review.

Consent documentation.

No sealed guardianships without court order.

Boring.

Necessary.

Giovanni refused to return to the company.

He chose to work with a witness-services nonprofit instead.

Independent.

Luca supported from distance.

Brothers rebuilt slowly.

Sunday breakfasts.

Arguments.

No forced closeness.

Vanessa moved out of Chicago for a year.

She wrote me once:

I AM SORRY.

I replied:

I KNOW.

Then:

DO BETTER.

She wrote:

TRYING.

Enough.

Mrs. Moretti’s health declined.

She hated walkers.

Loved ordering everyone around.

Some things unchanged.

I visited sometimes.

Not as staff.

Important.

One afternoon she said:

“I am glad you came.”

“I chose to.”

She smiled.

“I know.”

Good.

Then:

“Do you forgive me?”

“For hiring me without telling me why?”

“Yes.”

“Some.”

She nodded.

“Enough.”

No pressure.

Luca and I became serious.

Separate finances.

No employer relationship.

No live-in arrangement at first.

He overprotected when anxious.

I shut down when angry.

We learned.

One night he had security reroute my car because of a protest near my office.

Without asking.

I arrived home furious.

“You did the thing.”

He stopped.

“What thing?”

“Decided for me because you were scared.”

He closed his eyes.

“Right.”

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

Good.

“What do you want?”

The right question.

We changed the security protocol.

No location changes without consent unless immediate verified danger.

Power corrected by process.

That became a pattern.

Then Giovanni brought us the original photograph.

The one that started everything.

Vanessa beside him.

Three days before engagement dinner.

He explained what happened.

Vanessa found him after Teresa ordered her to.

She begged him to stay away from Luca.

He refused.

They argued outside St. Vincent’s.

Someone photographed them.

Who?

Mrs. Moretti.

Of course.

She had followed Vanessa.

Then gave the photograph to me because she no longer trusted her own memory enough to carry the truth alone.

That hurt.

She had been afraid dementia would erase it.

She needed a witness.

Me.

That explained her urgency upstairs.

“Please don’t let Vanessa stop me.”

I understood now.

Not because I was maid.

Because she chose me as witness.

Still, she should have asked.

She agreed.

Good.

Then she gave me something else.

A small envelope.

Not secret conspiracy.

My mother’s recipe card.

Apple cake.

Ellen Carter’s handwriting.

I cried.

Again with cake.

Families apparently communicate through dessert.

Luca laughed until I glared.

We baked it badly.

Mrs. Moretti ate two slices and said:

“Your mother made it better.”

Rude.

I loved her.

That complicated everything.

She died two years later.

Real death.

Hospital.

Family present by choice.

No fake death.

No hidden brother.

Before dying, she looked at Luca.

“I should have told you Giovanni was alive the moment I knew.”

“Yes.”

“I was afraid.”

“I know.”

“Do you forgive me?”

“Some.”

She smiled.

“Good enough.”

Then looked at me.

“I am sorry I used your job to keep you close.”

“I know.”

“Did you hate me?”

“Sometimes.”

She laughed.

Good.

She died that night.

At funeral, Giovanni stood beside Luca.

Vanessa came too.

No one pretended family was healed.

Just present.

Afterward, I noticed my hands.

No bandages.

No blood.

I remembered the engagement dinner.

Mrs. Moretti gripping my injured forearm.

“Hold on to me.”

Years later, Luca leaned against me after the funeral.

Tired.

I said:

“Hold on.”

He did.

Shared weight.

Different life.

The legal clinic later used Mrs. Moretti’s case in anonymized training: benevolent surveillance is still surveillance.

Hiring someone to keep them safe without telling them removes choice.

Even when no criminal law is broken, power can still become coercive.

Lucy insisted that lesson remain in the curriculum.

Good families need boundaries too.
