Chapter 1

Nobody moved.
Not Luca.
Not Vanessa.
Not me.
Diesel stood beside my knees with his body pressed against the stone bench.
The Rottweiler’s growl was low now.
Continuous.
A warning.
Luca held the black phone in one hand.
The screen glowed against his charcoal-gray suit.
Vanessa’s recorded voice had just said:
After the wedding, move the money.
And Luca?
He’ll never know the account existed.
The courtyard had gone so quiet I could hear water moving through the old fountain.
Luca looked at Vanessa.
“Start talking.”
She folded her arms.
“It was taken out of context.”
He stared.
“Which part?”
“All of it.”
“You said after the wedding.”
“Yes.”
“You said move the money.”
“Yes.”
“You said I would never know.”
Her face tightened.
“I was discussing a surprise.”
Luca looked at the blood running down my stockings.
Then at the broken trellis lying beside the fountain.
Then back at Vanessa.
“A surprise that required Claire bleeding through both shoes?”
“I didn’t do that.”
Diesel growled.
Vanessa stepped back.
Luca looked down at him.
“He disagrees.”
“He’s a dog.”
“He has better timing than most people tonight.”
Marco, Luca’s security chief, approached carefully.
Luca handed him the phone.
“Full forensic copy.”
“Already called tech.”
“Airplane mode. No remote wipe.”
Marco nodded.
“Done.”
Vanessa exhaled sharply.
“This is insane.”
Luca looked at her.
“You buried a phone on my property.”
“It wasn’t mine.”
“Claire saw you bury it.”
“She’s lying.”
I looked at her.
Fear rose instantly.
My legs hurt.
My ribs hurt from where I had hit the stone border.
But the worst part was still remembering Vanessa standing over me near the fountain.
Not panicked.
Not apologetic.
Angry.
I had found the phone.
She had found me.
The garden trellis had already been broken from winter damage.
One piece of metal had jagged edges.
I remembered her grabbing it.
Not swinging at my body exactly.
Blocking.
Pushing.
Trying to make me let go of the phone.
But every time I stepped back, the metal scraped my legs.
I should have run sooner.
I didn’t.
Because Diesel had been there.
Between us.
Barking.
Snarling.
Refusing to leave me.
Luca crouched in front of me.
“Claire.”
I looked at him.
“Can you stand?”
“Yes.”
He looked at my legs.
“That was not a challenge.”
I swallowed.
“Probably not.”
“Good.”
He turned.
“Medical room.”
“I don’t need—”
“You are bleeding through your stockings.”
“I can walk.”
“You already proved that badly.”
Despite everything, I almost smiled.
Vanessa saw.
Her expression hardened.
Luca saw that too.
He stood.
“Marco.”
“Yes?”
“Escort Vanessa inside.”
She froze.
“Escort?”
“Until I know what’s on that phone.”
“You’re treating me like a criminal.”
“No.”
His voice became quiet.
“I’m treating you like someone who has lied to me three times in five minutes.”
Vanessa stared at him.
Then at me.
“This is her fault.”
Diesel exploded.
One violent bark.
I flinched.
Luca immediately put one hand against the dog’s neck.
“Easy.”
Diesel’s muscles remained hard under his coat.
But he stopped.
Luca looked at Vanessa.
“You should stop blaming Claire while he’s listening.”
“That is ridiculous.”
“Maybe.”
He turned to Marco.
“Inside.”
Vanessa did not move.
Two security officers stepped closer.
Her face changed.
Humiliation.
Anger.
Fear.
Finally she walked.
Before entering the house, she turned.
“Luca.”
He looked at her.
“You are making a mistake.”
“No.”
He glanced at the bloody footprints behind me.
“I think I made one earlier.”
She went pale.
Then disappeared inside.
The words stayed in the courtyard.
I knew what he meant.
The engagement.
Maybe Vanessa knew too.
Dr. Hayes arrived ten minutes later.
He hated when people bled on stone benches.
Apparently.
“Inside.”
He pointed.
I tried to stand.
My left knee buckled.
Luca caught my elbow.
Diesel moved at the same time.
He pressed against my other side.
“I can do it.”
Luca looked at me.
“No heroics.”
“I’m a housemaid.”
“That is not a medical qualification.”
Marco returned.
“Phone is isolated.”
“What’s on it?”
Luca asked.
“Seventeen audio files. Twenty-two photos. One banking app with no current login.”
Vanessa’s voice came from the open courtyard doors.
“You have no right to search that.”
Everyone turned.
She had escaped her escort somehow.
Marco frowned.
“How did you—”
“I walked out.”
One security officer behind her looked embarrassed.
Luca’s face hardened.
“Back inside.”
“No.”
She looked at the phone.
“That device belonged to my father.”
Silence.
Luca stared.
“Your father.”
“Yes.”
“Robert Bellini.”
“Yes.”
“Why was his phone buried by my fountain?”
“He asked me to destroy it.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
Luca laughed once.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I didn’t ask.”
“Then why not throw it away?”
Vanessa looked toward the fountain.
“Because he said not to.”
“That makes less sense.”
Her mouth tightened.
I spoke before fear stopped me.
“She was burning papers too.”
Everyone looked at me.
Vanessa’s face changed.
Luca’s eyes sharpened.
“What papers?”
“Near the fountain.”
“When?”
“Before she buried the phone.”
“What did they look like?”
“Bank statements.”
Vanessa snapped:
“You saw nothing.”
I flinched.
Diesel stepped forward.
Luca moved between us.
“Don’t.”
He did not raise his voice.
He didn’t need to.
Vanessa stared at him.
Then whispered:
“You don’t understand what this is.”
“Then explain.”
“It is not about us.”
“That recording sounded very much about us.”
“My father has accounts.”
“Your father has many accounts.”
“Not like this one.”
Luca became still.
“What kind?”
Vanessa looked at Marco.
Then at Dr. Hayes.
Then me.
“I want privacy.”
Luca stared.
“Claire is part of this because you injured her.”
“I did not—”
“Enough.”
He looked toward Marco.
“Clear the courtyard except medical and security.”
Marco nodded.
Dr. Hayes glared.
“I’m not leaving until she’s treated.”
Luca looked at me.
“Good.”
Vanessa waited until everyone else moved away.
Then:
“My father controls a private account.”
“How much?”
“I don’t know.”
“Guess.”
“Over fifty million.”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“Whose money?”
“Bellini family money.”
“Then why would I never know it existed?”
She looked down.
“Because part of it came from Moretti funds.”
Silence.
Luca stared.
“How?”
“Years ago.”
“Before us?”
“Yes.”
“From my father?”
“Yes.”
Antonio Moretti.
Dead eleven years.
His name still had the power to change Luca’s face.
“What was the arrangement?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“I don’t know every detail.”
“Tell me the ones you do.”
“My father and Antonio built an offshore reserve.”
“For what?”
“Emergency deals.”
“That means nothing.”
“Political settlements. private acquisitions. litigation.”
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“Bribes.”
“No.”
“Then say no confidently.”
She couldn’t.
That was answer enough.
Luca looked toward the phone.
“And after the wedding?”
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“My father planned to move the account into a trust.”
“Whose trust?”
“The Bellini-Moretti family trust.”
“There is no such trust.”
“Not yet.”
Silence.
The wedding would create it.
Or at least create the appearance of shared authority.
Luca understood.
“So marriage gives you access to something.”
“Not me.”
“Your father.”
“How?”
“He needs a Moretti spouse authorization.”
Luca laughed once.
“Of course.”
Vanessa’s face broke.
“I did not know until last month.”
“You knew enough to bury a phone.”
“Yes.”
“You knew enough to burn documents.”
“Yes.”
“You knew enough to attack Claire.”
Her eyes filled.
“I panicked.”
I hated that word.
Everyone panicked after they hurt someone.
Before?
They chose.
Luca looked at me.
I think he knew what I was thinking.
He turned back to Vanessa.
“Who is the man on the recording?”
She closed her eyes.
“My brother.”
“Victor?”
“No.”
Luca frowned.
“You have another brother?”
She nodded.
“Half brother.”
“Name.”
“Julian Bellini.”
He stared.
“I have never heard that name.”
“That was intentional.”
“Why?”
“Because Julian is not legally a Bellini.”
“What is he?”
Her face tightened.
“A Moretti.”
Everything stopped.
Luca did not move.
“What?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Antonio was his father.”
The courtyard disappeared around us.
Antonio Moretti.
Luca’s father.
Had a son with someone connected to the Bellinis.
A hidden son.
Julian.
Which made the man on the phone Luca’s half brother.
Luca’s voice came out cold.
“My father had another child.”
“Yes.”
“With who?”
Vanessa stared at the fountain.
“My aunt.”
“Name.”
“Celeste Bellini.”
Silence.
I looked at Luca.
His face had gone completely still.
“Where is Julian now?”
Vanessa answered:
“New York.”
“Does he know who he is?”
“Yes.”
“Does he know me?”
“Yes.”
“Does he want the account?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Yes.”
“And after the wedding, you planned to help him move it.”
“No.”
“Your voice is on the recording.”
“I planned to stop my father.”
“How?”
“By getting the account under legal family control first.”
“That is not stopping him.”
“It was the only way I could think of.”
Luca laughed bitterly.
“So you marry me.”
Her face broke.
“I was already going to marry you.”
“That sentence is worse.”
She knew it.
I saw it.
Then Marco’s phone rang.
He stepped away.
Listened.
His face changed.
“Mr. Moretti.”
Luca turned.
“What?”
“Tech recovered deleted video from the phone.”
“Of?”
Marco looked at Vanessa.
Then at Luca.
“Antonio Moretti.”
Nobody breathed.
“That’s impossible,” Luca whispered.
Marco turned the screen.
Old video.
Grainy.
Antonio Moretti stood in a private office.
Alive.
The date stamp:
Four years ago.
Seven years after his death.
Luca stopped breathing.
May you like
Vanessa went white.
And Diesel, still pressed against my injured leg, suddenly growled toward the dark garden as if somebody else had been listening the entire time.
