Chapter 3

Luca did not believe Samuel Vale.

Good.

Neither did Price.

A living doctor who had faked one death certificate did not get automatic credibility when he claimed another dead man was alive.

Evidence first.

Vale explained.

Eleven years ago, Carlo Moretti was diagnosed with aggressive lymphoma.

Private.

He did not want the family to know until treatment plan existed.

Then came a car crash.

The burned body identified as Carlo.

Except Vale said the body was Carlo’s cousin, Enzo Moretti, who had been driving Carlo’s car.

Enzo died instantly.

Carlo survived because he was not in the vehicle.

Then why fake his death?

Vale said Carlo saw opportunity.

He was already sick.

He knew the truth about Luca’s paternity could explode succession.

He believed disappearing would protect Luca from Victor Bellini.

Again.

Protection through lies.

Then Carlo went abroad for treatment.

Sofia knew.

Victor knew.

Vale helped.

Carlo intended to return.

Then something changed.

What?

He learned Miriam Bennett had died.

My mother.

I was twenty-two.

Carlo tried to contact Rosa.

Rosa confirmed one letter.

She never answered.

Why?

Miriam had made her promise never to bring Moretti into my life.

Then Carlo disappeared again.

Vale heard from him only through intermediaries.

Last direct contact:

three years ago.

So was Carlo alive now?

Unknown.

Important.

Then why did Vale say Carlo ordered attack?

Because a message arrived two weeks ago using Carlo’s old cryptographic key.

Instruction:

STOP THE BENNETT CLAIM BEFORE THE WEDDING.

Not “kill Elena.”

Not even “hurt.”

Stop the claim.

Vanessa received same instruction through Bellini counsel.

She interpreted?

Maybe.

Then who escalated to violence?

Vale suspected Vanessa.

But parking footage showed another person near the stairwell.

Face hidden.

Could be hired.

Then I remembered.

When I was hit, I smelled jasmine.

Vanessa wore jasmine perfume.

Obvious.

Too obvious.

Maybe perfume planted.

Price recovered my dress preparation suite.

Vanessa’s perfume bottle missing.

Then hotel cleaner said a man asked which perfume “the bride’s friend” wore.

Interesting.

No certainty.

Then Luca asked Vale:

“What is Carlo’s old key?”

Not literal key.

Digital signing certificate used for encrypted family messages.

Supposedly destroyed after death.

Someone used it recently.

Could be Carlo.

Could be cloned.

Could be archive theft.

Again.

Then Price searched the old Moretti estate server.

Access logs.

Certificate had been restored six months ago by one administrator.

Name:

NICHOLAS MORETTI.

Luca froze.

His uncle.

Carlo’s younger brother.

Alive.

Board member emeritus.

Quiet.

He had always hated Bellinis.

Why would he restore Carlo’s key?

Nicholas said for archival authentication.

Possible.

But he had not documented it.

Then the dormant trust.

Nicholas would benefit if Carlo’s biological line disappeared too?

Price checked.

If Bellini foundation lost claim and no biological descendant existed, shares would pass to the Moretti family remainder trust.

Current trustee:

Nicholas Moretti.

There.

Two rival paths.

Bellini side benefits if I fail before noon.

Moretti remainder benefits if my paternity is disproved or I die without recognized issue later.

Everyone had motive.

Then Luca said:

“So both families had reasons to prefer her invisible.”

Price nodded.

That was uglier than one villain.

Then Vanessa finally agreed to a full proffer.

With counsel.

She admitted calling me.

Admitted stealing my folder after I was attacked.

Admitted deleting my phone.

But denied striking me.

Price asked:

“Why did you take the file?”

Vanessa said:

“Because Nicholas Moretti told me Elena’s claim was fraudulent.”

Luca looked at his uncle’s name on the transcript.

Of course.

Nicholas had contacted Vanessa secretly.

Said Carlo had no daughter.

Said I was being used to strip assets from both families.

He told her to secure the file until independent testing.

Vanessa believed partly.

But why threaten my baby?

She cried.

“I wanted her scared enough not to file.”

There.

She wrote the ultrasound note.

She did not order violence, she claimed.

Then why was her perfume there?

“My bottle disappeared yesterday.”

Could be true.

Then who hit me?

Price enhanced garage video.

A figure came from stairwell.

Height:

approximately five-nine.

Vanessa five-seven.

Could still.

Gait analysis uncertain.

One shoe visible.

Men’s dress shoe.

Not Vanessa.

Then the attacker removed my bag, took phone, folder, and perfume bottle.

Vanessa arrived two minutes later.

She saw me down.

Did she call help?

No.

That mattered.

What did she do?

She took folder from attacker.

Then left.

She abandoned me.

Even if she did not strike.

Ugly.

Then who was attacker?

Nicholas Moretti’s driver, perhaps?

Security plate trace.

A sedan exited garage minutes later.

Registered to Nicholas’s foundation.

Driver:

Ethan Vale.

Samuel Vale’s son.

Another layer.

Ethan had worked private investigations.

Price found him at O’Hare.

Trying to board for Zurich.

He was detained.

He asked for lawyer.

Fine.

His luggage contained:

cash,

two passports,

Vanessa’s perfume bottle,

and one old silver signet ring engraved C.M.

Carlo Moretti.

Luca stared.

Where did Ethan get Carlo’s ring?

He said nothing.

Then forensic swab on the ring.

Recent skin cells.

Male.

DNA not yet known.

Price compared to Carlo’s archived sample.

Match.

Fresh enough to suggest someone genetically identical? No identical twin? Carlo has brother Nicholas, not identical maybe. Better direct match could be Carlo or contamination from old. Fresh isn't definitive. Let's say partial profile consistent with Carlo, but ring could retain. Need careful.

The lab could not date DNA precisely.

So it did not prove Carlo was alive.

Good.

Then Ethan’s phone.

One message from contact saved as C.

STOP HER BEFORE NOON.

Another:

NO BLOOD.

There.

Whoever C was did not order murder.

At least in message.

Then Ethan replied:

SHE WON’T LISTEN.

C:

THEN TAKE THE FILE.

No instruction to strike.

Maybe Ethan attacked on his own.

Then one unsent draft:

NICHOLAS WILL PAY DOUBLE IF SHE DOESN’T WAKE UP.

There.

Nicholas.

Moretti uncle.

He wanted more than file.

Did he order death?

Maybe.

Then Luca said something that changed the investigation.

“Nicholas visited me yesterday.”

Price looked up.

“Why?”

“To ask whether I had updated my will before marriage.”

Silence.

Why ask?

Because if Luca married me, his estate plan might grant me spousal rights.

If I was Carlo’s biological daughter, our marriage would consolidate Moretti legacy assets under one household.

Nicholas would lose influence.

Then Price obtained warrant.

Nicholas’s office.

Inside:

A whiteboard.

Three columns.

LUCA.

ELENA.

CHILD.

Under CHILD:

UNBORN = TWO BLOODLINES.

Someone had written what we were to them.

Not people.

Positions.

Then one final line:

IF CARLO RETURNS, EVERYTHING CHANGES.

Nicholas believed Carlo might still be alive.

Maybe he knew more.

Then basement safe.

One current photograph.

Carlo Moretti.

Older.

Thin.

Standing beside a lake.

Date stamp:

three months ago.

On back:

HE STILL THINKS LUCA IS HIS SON.

Luca sat down.

Not because Carlo was alive.

Because the line meant Carlo did not know the truth had finally broken.

The man who raised him still believed the lie was intact.

And somewhere, apparently alive, Carlo Moretti had no idea his children were about to destroy the secret he built his life around.

Vanessa’s presence after the assault was established by camera timestamp, while the actual strike came from a figure whose shoes and height did not match her clearly.

Ethan Vale’s possession of Vanessa’s perfume bottle strongly supported the framing theory but did not excuse Vanessa’s later abandonment of Elena.

Nicholas’s whiteboard used financial shorthand beside names, illustrating how family members had been reduced to asset positions.

The Carlo signet ring produced no reliable time-of-contact evidence, so investigators did not use it as proof that he was recently in Chicago.

Luca’s old will became a separate legal issue from the assault case, preventing inheritance panic from driving criminal conclusions.
