Chapter 8

Three years after the folder, Luca proposed.

Not at a port.

Thank God.

Not in an elevator.

Also thank God.

In our kitchen.

He did not kneel immediately.

He held no ring.

“Would you consider marrying me?”

I laughed.

“Consider?”

“Yes.”

“Good wording.”

“I practiced.”

Of course he did.

I said:

“Yes.”

Then:

“But.”

He smiled.

“Of course.”

Independent prenup lawyers.

No automatic trust access.

No Moretti board seat for me.

No expectation that I attend family business meetings.

No use of my compliance work by Moretti companies without formal contract and conflict review.

No family security tracking my location by default.

He agreed.

Then he showed me the ring.

Simple.

No Moretti heirloom.

Independent jeweler.

Normal.

Good.

The wedding had fifty people.

Small by Moretti standards.

Huge by mine.

Matteo stood beside Luca.

Not because six years vanished.

Because the brothers had built something new.

That mattered.

Nico Romano came.

He raised a glass and said:

“For the record, I did not give Emma any folders.”

Everyone laughed.

Even me.

During dinner, a server approached with a stack of documents for the venue manager.

Wrong table.

I stared.

Luca stared.

Then we both started laughing.

The server looked terrified.

“Sorry.”

“You’re fine,” I said.

Good.

No symbolic disaster.

Just paper.

Married life remained normal enough to be difficult.

Luca still tried to solve problems too fast.

I still refused help too reflexively.

Therapy helped.

Money discussions helped.

Power needs language before it becomes habit.

One major fight happened when Moretti Maritime wanted to hire my firm.

Huge contract.

My managing partner was thrilled.

I was not.

Conflict.

I recused.

Then still felt weird.

Luca said:

“We can hire someone else.”

“That’s not the point.”

“What is?”

“My marriage should not become infrastructure at my workplace.”

He stopped.

“Right.”

Moretti hired a different firm through competitive process.

Good.

My company lost money.

Also fine.

Boundaries cost something.

Otherwise they are decoration.

Matteo became a consultant on maritime whistleblower protections.

Some people hated that.

Fair.

He had used secret evidence and disappeared.

He never called himself a whistleblower hero.

He said:

“I stayed too long, then hid too long.”

Better.

Grace Chen testified in ethics programs about coercion through family pressure.

Leonard Voss’s case became a law-school example of dual-role conflicts and document misuse.

Carmine was convicted on several counts and acquitted on others.

Important.

The jury did not become a story machine.

Evidence differed by charge.

Luca attended one day of trial.

Then stopped.

“Why?”

“I don’t need to watch him every day to prove I care.”

Good.

The Port Twelve workers’ families received additional compensation through court-supervised settlements.

Not family charity.

Not Luca handing out checks.

Formal.

Appealable.

Better.

One family refused settlement and kept litigating.

Also their right.

No forced closure.

The old Moretti mansion was eventually sold.

Luca did not turn it into a museum.

Good.

The port archive went to the university.

Family objects stayed family objects.

The conference-room folder became evidence history.

Not sacred.

Then one afternoon, I got into an elevator at my office.

A man rushed toward it.

“Hold it!”

I did.

He stepped in.

Gray suit.

Silver at temples.

For half a second—

my body remembered.

Then he pressed seven.

“Thanks.”

“That’s all?”

He looked confused.

“Was there supposed to be more?”

I laughed.

“No.”

Normal.

Good.

The doors closed.

Nothing happened.

That mattered more than I expected.

Later I told Luca.

He smiled.

“Proud of you.”

“Don’t make it dramatic.”

“Trying.”

Good.

Then our annual port-governance report showed temporary badge violations had fallen eighty percent.

Boring number.

Beautiful.

No missing persons.

No shell trust surprise.

No explosion.

Just a system catching ordinary misuse.

That was the real victory.

The prenup process was deliberately unromantic. Two lawyers, separate rooms, spreadsheets, succession clauses. Emma liked it because clarity made affection less dependent on assumption.

At the wedding, Port Twelve families were not invited as symbols. Some were personal friends and came; others were left alone. Their grief was not family décor.

Emma's recusal from the Moretti contract cost her firm meaningful revenue. Her partners were frustrated but accepted the conflict rules they had written together.

Carmine's mixed verdict frustrated people who wanted a simple ending. Emma thought it was appropriate. Courts decide charges, not narratives.

The old mansion sale included protections for staff leases and severance. Luca had learned that closing a family chapter should not create new instability for employees.

The elevator moment at Emma's office passed without incident. She later realized safety often feels anticlimactic, which is exactly why it is easy to undervalue.

The marriage agreement specified that security could be offered, not imposed, except during a documented imminent threat. Luca accepted language his younger self would have hated.

The wedding venue used independent staff rather than Moretti household employees. Emma did not want anyone serving because family hierarchy expected it.

Her firm's lost contract was discussed openly at a partner meeting so recusal did not become mysterious favoritism in reverse.

When the elevator stranger at Emma's office left on floor seven, she noticed her shoulders relax only after the doors closed. Progress could still include memory.

Emma later remembered one additional lesson from this stage of the case: safeguard 5 mattered because it was written, reviewable, and available to people who did not carry a Moretti name. A rule that depends on a powerful person choosing to be good is not much of a rule.
