Chapter 1

The man at the far end of the table stopped moving.
His champagne glass hung halfway between the linen and his mouth. His fingers tightened around the stem. For one second, he looked less like a wealthy guest at an engagement dinner and more like someone who had just heard his own name read from an arrest warrant.
Luca Moretti saw it.
So did I.
The man was Adrian Bellini, Vanessa's mother's nephew. Mid-forties. Silver at the temples. Navy tuxedo. He had spent most of the evening telling stories too loudly and laughing before anyone else did.
Now he was silent.
Luca slowly set the burner phone beside his untouched coffee.
"Adrian."
Adrian forced a smile. "What?"
"You lowered your glass before the recording ended."
"So?"
"So everybody else was still listening."
Vanessa stepped forward. Her midnight dress shimmered beneath the chandelier.
"Luca, don't start interrogating my family because a maid stole a phone."
His eyes shifted to her.
"A maid?"
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
I was still kneeling on the marble.
The pain had gone from sharp to hot. Blood spread beneath my stockings, darkening both knees. The gauze around my waist felt wet again where the broken metal arch had sliced me that afternoon.
Luca looked down.
"Kate. Get up."
I tried.
My left knee buckled.
The room tilted.
His hand caught my forearm before I hit the floor.
For a man who had barely moved all evening, he was frighteningly fast.
"Chair," he said.
A server rushed one over.
Vanessa stared at his hand on my arm.
"She's fine."
Luca did not look at her.
"No. She isn't."
He helped me into the chair.
I hated that ten rich strangers were watching me bleed.
I hated more that Vanessa looked angry about the attention instead of concerned about why I was bleeding.
Luca turned to Marco DeSantis, his security chief.
"Lock the doors."
Vanessa laughed once. "You're kidding."
Marco touched the earpiece at his collar.
The double doors closed.
Two guards took position in front of them.
Vanessa stopped laughing.
Adrian stood.
"I'm leaving."
Luca's voice stayed calm.
"Sit down."
"I'm not one of your employees."
"Then consider it a request from the man whose money you were discussing stealing."
Adrian's face hardened.
Marco stepped in front of him.
Adrian sat.
Luca picked up the burner phone again.
"Play it from the beginning."
Marco connected the phone to the dining room speaker.
Vanessa's recorded voice filled the room.
"Sunday morning. After the wedding. Send the photographs first."
A man's voice answered.
"And if Luca denies it?"
Vanessa:
"He won't matter once everyone believes he hurt me."
The man:
"And the account transfer?"
Vanessa:
"Midnight. Everything moves before he wakes up."
The file ended.
Luca looked at Adrian.
"That's your voice."
"No, it isn't."
Marco spoke from the wall.
"It is."
Adrian turned.
Marco folded his arms.
"I have six years of security briefing recordings with you speaking. Want me to pull three samples?"
One of the women at the table whispered, "Oh my God."
Vanessa rounded on Adrian.
"You said you deleted that."
The moment the words left her mouth, she froze.
Adrian stared at her.
"You said the phone was clean."
Luca leaned back slightly.
Neither of them had meant to confess.
They had just done it for each other.
"Interesting," Luca said.
Vanessa recovered first.
"This is being twisted. We were talking about a legal protection plan."
"With staged photographs?"
"You haven't heard the context."
"Then give me the context."
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Luca looked at me.
"How much did you hear upstairs?"
My mouth was dry.
"Not everything."
"Tell me what you did hear."
Vanessa snapped, "She was eavesdropping."
Luca did not take his eyes off me.
"Kate."
I swallowed.
"She was on the phone when I went into the bridal suite to replace towels. She said the bruises had to look three days old. She said the doctor already knew what to write."
The older man beside Adrian put his glass down.
Luca's expression did not change.
That made him scarier.
"Doctor's name?"
"I didn't hear it."
"Anything else?"
"She said the photos needed to go to two reporters and one board member before breakfast."
Luca turned to Vanessa.
"Which board member?"
"There was no board member."
"She just said there was."
"She misunderstood."
I stared at Vanessa.
"You said Mr. Hale would panic if the pictures reached him before he saw the transfer notice."
Luca's eyes sharpened.
"Thomas Hale?"
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
Again, a mistake.
Luca noticed.
"The voting committee."
Nobody answered.
He turned to Marco.
"Bring me the phone."
Marco handed it over.
Luca scrolled through the messages.
Most were deleted.
But the copied SIM card in my hand was not.
I lifted it.
"This has more."
Vanessa stepped toward me.
"Give me that."
Luca moved between us.
One step.
Nothing dramatic.
It stopped her completely.
"Stay where you are."
"It's my property."
"So is the house. Yet apparently you planned to rob it."
Her face flushed.
I gave the SIM card to Marco.
"I copied the messages before she came back."
Vanessa's eyes went white around the edges.
"How?"
I almost smiled.
"You left your laptop unlocked."
Adrian muttered something under his breath.
Luca heard him.
"Speak up."
Adrian shook his head.
Marco inserted the SIM into a secured reader attached to a tablet.
Files appeared.
Audio.
Screenshots.
Banking images.
A spreadsheet.
The title across the top was simple.
WEDDING SETTLEMENT - PHASE ONE.
Luca stood behind Marco.
I watched his face as he read.
Three properties.
Two offshore companies.
One yacht.
Voting proxies for Moretti Holdings.
A charitable foundation.
Then an account labeled:
ELENA MORETTI TRUST.
Luca stopped breathing for half a second.
Marco noticed.
I noticed too.
Vanessa looked toward the door.
"Open that line," Luca said.
Marco tapped it.
Password protected.
Luca looked up.
"Why is my sister's trust on your plan?"
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Elena Moretti."
The name made something move through the room.
An older guest stared at his plate.
Adrian looked at the window.
I knew nothing about Elena.
But everyone else did.
Luca's voice lowered.
"She has been dead twenty-two years. Her trust is restricted. Nobody touches it without two trustees and a court review. So tell me why it appears beside a midnight transfer."
Vanessa's lips parted.
A hard object struck the window.
CRACK.
Everybody ducked.
The glass held.
A second impact hit the next pane.
Marco shouted, "Down!"
I dropped instinctively.
Pain tore through both knees.
Luca grabbed the back of my chair and pulled me behind the table.
A third object smashed through the smaller terrace window.
It was not a bullet.
A metal cylinder rolled beneath the flowers.
White smoke poured from it.
"Gas!" Marco yelled.
Guests screamed.
Chairs overturned.
Luca pulled off his jacket and pressed the sleeve over my mouth.
"Breathe through this."
My eyes burned.
"What is it?"
"Probably irritant. Move."
Security opened the service corridor.
People stumbled into it.
I tried to stand.
My right leg folded.
Luca caught me again.
This time he put my arm over his shoulder.
"I can walk."
"You're doing a terrible demonstration of it."
Even terrified, I almost laughed.
We reached the corridor.
Behind us, Marco shouted.
"Adrian!"
Luca turned.
"What?"
"He's gone."
Vanessa's mother cried, "Vanessa?"
Marco scanned the smoke.
"She's gone too."
Luca's face changed.
The calm disappeared.
Not into panic.
Into calculation.
"Garage. Lower terrace. Service gate. Lock all three."
Guards ran.
I leaned against the wall, fighting nausea.
Luca looked at Marco.
"The tablet?"
Marco held it under his jacket.
"Safe."
"Good."
Then Luca looked at me.
"Take Kate to the east suite."
I pulled away from him.
"I'm not being locked in a room."
"Yes, you are."
"I'm not your prisoner."
"No."
His gaze dropped to the blood soaking my stocking.
"You're the only witness who copied their plan before it disappeared. That makes you evidence, leverage, and a target. Pick whichever word bothers you least."
I stared at him.
"All three bother me."
"Good. Stay alive long enough to complain later."
Marco took my arm gently.
The alarm system began pulsing red light down the hall.
As we moved away, I looked back.
Luca stood alone at the opening to the smoke-filled dining room.
His white shirt was gray at one shoulder from the canister residue.
His engagement dinner was destroyed.
His fiancée was missing.
His sister's dead name had appeared on a theft plan.
And instead of shouting, he was becoming quieter.
That seemed worse.
"Marco," he called.
We stopped.
"Find Vanessa before she reaches a car."
Marco nodded.
Luca's eyes moved to me.
"And nobody touches Kate."
I understood then that the burner phone was not the scandal.
It was a door.
May you like
And I had just opened it.
Before Marco led me away, one of the older guests caught my sleeve. She was Vanessa's aunt, and her face had gone gray beneath expensive makeup. "I saw her make you kneel," she whispered. "I should have said something." I looked at her hand on me until she released it. "Yes," I said. "You should have." That stayed with me as much as the burner phone. Rooms full of people could witness cruelty and still wait for someone more powerful to object first. Tonight, Luca finally had. But I would remember who had remained silent before he did.
