Chapter 4

The second waiver became the center of everything.
Not because Nicholas wanted money.
Because it said he had agreed to remain legally dead.
That sentence bothered me more than the shares.
A person can give up money.
Can someone give up being alive on paper?
Maybe.
With counsel.
With capacity.
With full information.
But Nicholas said he never signed it.
Then Isabella’s memory mattered.
Not as Luca’s former fiancée.
As witness.
She agreed to a recorded interview through lawyers.
Nicholas listened by video from Maine.
Camera off at first.
His choice.
I was not there.
Nadia later gave me factual summary because my assault case and father’s files overlapped.
At the eleven-year meeting:
Antonio sat at head of table.
Victor beside him.
Harold Finch.
A notary named Peter Sloan.
A man introduced as “Nicholas’s authorized representative.”
Isabella.
No Nicholas.
Then the representative signed.
Isabella remembered something.
“He signed N. Moretti.”
Not Nicholas?
Just N. Moretti.
Notary accepted.
Why?
Victor said power-of-attorney documentation already verified.
Was it?
Maybe.
Then Isabella remembered the man’s right hand.
Burn scar.
Why important?
The nominee used elsewhere had no scar in customs photographs.
So maybe second man.
Then Harold searched records.
The authorized representative was listed as:
Nathan Mercer.
Alias used in Northbridge.
Was he related to Nicholas’s residence alias Nolan Mercer?
No.
Mercer was generic cover surname.
Then Peter Sloan, the notary, was found.
Retired.
He said he had been told Nathan Mercer held durable power of attorney for Nicholas.
He saw a copy.
Never original.
Who supplied?
Victor Bellini.
There.
Then the power of attorney itself.
Date:
Fourteen years ago.
Signature Nicholas.
Witness Harold.
Harold stared when shown.
“I did not witness this.”
Forgery.
So chain:
Fake POA.
Representative signs second waiver.
Notary relies on fake POA.
Bellini financing relies on second waiver.
That was the legal engine.
Who made fake POA?
Unknown.
But metadata on scanned copy came from Bellini Legal Services.
Simon? No current attorney maybe Victor’s counsel then: Raymond Cole.
Alive.
Former Bellini general counsel.
He refused initial interview.
Subpoena.
Good.
Then Antonio’s role.
Did he know POA forged?
Meeting minutes:
Antonio asked, “Is this clean?”
Victor replied, “It is enforceable.”
Not proof he knew.
Then a handwritten note by Antonio:
I don’t like Mercer signing for N.
That suggests concern.
Then below:
Victor says necessary.
He proceeded.
Complicity.
Maybe not architect.
Then Elena later found second waiver.
Her note:
This is not Nicholas’s hand.
Antonio says it does not matter because POA.
Where is POA?
She was suspicious.
Then:
Victor will not show original.
There.
She knew something wrong.
Did she report?
No.
Again.
She kept copy.
Then Nicholas on video.
He finally turned camera on for Luca.
I did not see until later? He allowed family photo? No.
Luca told me only broad.
Nicholas was sixty-five.
Thin.
Gray hair.
One side of face slightly weaker.
Speech careful.
Memory uneven.
Still himself.
He looked at Luca for a long time.
“You don’t look like Antonio.”
Luca almost laughed.
“People say I do.”
“They’re wrong.”
Then:
“You bit me.”
“So I’ve heard.”
Good.
They did not talk shares.
They talked:
Weather.
Maine.
Fishing.
Luca’s mother.
A dog Nicholas used to own.
Luca’s childhood.
Nicholas remembered fragments.
No forced tears.
Then at end:
“Do you want to see me?”
Luca asked.
Nicholas said:
“Not yet.”
“Okay.”
Then:
“Do you want your name corrected publicly?”
“Yes.”
“I’ll support.”
“Do not make it a Moretti press event.”
“I won’t.”
Good.
Then Nicholas asked:
“Claire Dawson?”
Luca stiffened.
“She’s not here.”
“I know.”
“What about her?”
“Thomas’s daughter.”
“Yes.”
“Tell her he was stubborn.”
I smiled when Luca told me.
“That is accurate.”
Then Nicholas said:
“He stopped one shipment because a chair was listed as seventeenth-century and he said it looked like 1980s reproduction.”
I laughed.
Dad.
There.
Ordinary competence.
Then the second waiver investigation continued.
Raymond Cole finally testified under subpoena.
He admitted Bellini legal team prepared POA from a template.
Who authorized signature?
He said:
“Victor.”
There.
Did Victor sign Nicholas’s name?
“No.”
Who did?
“A clerk.”
What clerk?
“Document services.”
Name?
“Paula Grant.”
Alive.
She testified:
Victor’s chief of staff gave her a scanned Nicholas signature and told her to place it on POA.
She believed Nicholas had approved electronically.
Maybe.
Then Harold’s witness signature?
Also applied from stored signature image.
He did not approve.
Clear forgery process.
Then Victor’s current lawyer advised him to admit.
He did.
He said:
“I believed Nicholas had orally consented to broad authority.”
Harold said no.
Nicholas said no.
No written evidence.
Then why?
Victor needed clean financing.
Antonio needed stable ownership.
Both benefited.
Then court consequences.
Second waiver invalid likely.
First waiver remains disputed but real signature.
Nicholas did not want rescission.
He wanted death declaration vacated and second waiver formally void.
Fine.
Then board.
Moretti Holdings had to disclose historical uncertainty.
Luca did.
Stock? private company maybe lenders.
Lenders notified.
Auditors.
Regulators where needed.
Painful.
But no concealment.
Then joint acquisition with Bellini canceled.
Not because romance only.
Because financing tainted.
Good.
Then Isabella.
Her recent criminal case.
She offered full cooperation.
Still responsible.
Her lawyer proposed misdemeanor plea.
Nadia asked what I wanted.
“I want record to say she hurt me and threatened my job.”
Good.
Not maximum punishment.
Accuracy.
Then Isabella sent one statement through counsel:
I knew the second waiver was signed by a representative, not Nicholas. I did not know the POA was forged.
That seemed plausible.
Then:
I removed the Northbridge folder because my father asked me to delay discovery until after marriage.
There.
Current wrongdoing.
Then:
I injured Claire while doing that.
Good.
No passive voice.
Then she admitted making me continue serving to buy time.
Important.
Then one more twist.
The black Northbridge folder had an appendix:
PROPERTY 12.
Same as brass key NORTHBRIDGE — 12.
What did key open?
Not safe.
A mailbox at Northbridge marina.
Still active?
Marina changed owners.
Box 12 remained in old office cabinet.
Police/counsel obtained.
Inside:
One cassette.
One sealed deed.
One letter.
Cassette labeled:
NICHOLAS — IF HE EVER WANTS IT.
Not for Luca.
So Nicholas decides.
He said open.
Audio recording:
Antonio and Nicholas, fourteen years ago.
Nicholas newly found.
Antonio crying.
Real emotion.
Antonio:
“I thought you were dead.”
Nicholas:
“So you kept everything.”
Antonio:
“I didn’t know.”
Nicholas:
“You know now.”
Silence.
Then Antonio:
“I can fix money.”
Nicholas:
“I don’t care about money.”
There.
Then:
“I care that you need me to stay dead.”
Antonio did not answer.
That silence said enough.
Then deed.
A coastal house in Maine.
Owned by Northbridge.
Beneficiary Nicholas.
He still lived nearby? Maybe house rented.
Then letter from Antonio:
I could not make myself correct public record because every structure I built depended on you being gone.
That is my shame, not your obligation.
Nicholas listened.
Then said:
“Keep that in court file.”
Not private.
He wanted truth attached.
Good.
Then he asked Luca:
“Do you still want to meet me?”
“Yes.”
Nicholas paused.
“Come alone.”
Luca agreed.
No lawyers.
No Claire.
No cameras.
Just nephew.
Before leaving for Maine, Luca stopped by staff medical room where I had follow-up.
“Claire.”
“Yes?”
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For not opening box 317.”
“That wasn’t mine.”
“Exactly.”
Then:
“Do you need anything?”
“No.”
Good.
He nodded.
Growth.
Then he went to meet his uncle.
And for first time in thirty-one years—
a Moretti family reunion happened without a lawyer in the room.
The video of Nicholas and Luca was not recorded.
Good.
Nobody needed archive of first reunion.
But Nicholas did allow the cassette from mailbox 12 into court file.
Why?
“Because Antonio is dead and people will make him nicer than he was.”
Harsh.
Then:
“He was also nicer than the file.”
Contradiction.
Nicholas wanted both.
Then Antonio audio had another section.
Antonio:
“I can put house in your name.”
Nicholas:
“I don’t want house.”
Antonio:
“Care trust.”
“I don’t want trust.”
“What do you want?”
“Tell them I’m alive.”
Silence.
Then Antonio:
“I can’t yet.”
There.
Four words.
That was choice.
Then Nicholas:
“You mean you won’t.”
Good.
Then later in tape Antonio cried.
Not performative maybe.
He said:
“I thought I buried you.”
Nicholas:
“You buried paper.”
Ouch.
This recording became key.
It proved Antonio knew Nicholas wanted identity correction at least then.
So argument that Nicholas requested total secrecy was false.
He requested limited privacy from public spectacle, not legal death forever.
Important.
Then Bellini lawyers tried to say he later changed mind.
Maybe.
No signed evidence.
Second waiver forged.
So no.
Then Raymond Cole’s emails.
Subject:
N.M. CLEANUP.
Horrible language.
One:
Victor wants identity waiver broad enough to protect financing.
There.
Current motive.
Then:
Antonio uncomfortable.
Proceed if Finch accepts.
Harold denied accepting.
Maybe Cole assumed.
Then another:
Isabella attending only because Victor wants next generation aware.
That explained photo.
She was not architect.
She was being inducted into secret.
At twenty-two.
Still later chose to weaponize secret.
Both.
Then Isabella’s plea agreement required truthful cooperation in Victor case.
Good.
No immunity for assault beyond plea.
Then Claire—me—heard one more thing from Nadia.
Isabella had told prosecutor:
“I thought if I could get through wedding day, Luca would forgive me later.”
That hurt.
Because she assumed marriage reduced my truth to relationship problem.
Then she added:
“I was wrong.”
Good.
No more.
Then court issued protective order around Nicholas medical records.
Press challenged.
Court maintained.
Good.
Being alive publicly does not make medical history public.
Then one tabloid published old rehab address.
Harold moved? Nicholas had already relocated.
Still invasive.
Luca wanted sue.
Nicholas said:
“No.”
His choice.
Then Luca asked:
“Can I at least send cease-and-desist?”
“No.”
“Okay.”
Growth.
Then corporate board wanted use Nicholas story in governance campaign.
Nicholas said absolutely not.
Good.
No brand redemption through harmed person.
Then Moretti Holdings statement stayed factual:
Historical ownership and related-party records under independent review.
No “family healing.”
Excellent.
Then Northbridge marina mailbox 12 was closed.
The key returned to property manager.
No relic.
Luca asked if I wanted brass key? Why would I? No.
Police released to estate.
Nicholas said destroy.
They did.
Good.
Objects can end.
Then the broken cabinet from study.
Luca wanted restore.
I said nothing.
His choice.
He eventually removed.
Not because trauma.
Because glass structure unsafe.
Good.
Then study stayed locked temporarily during archive.
Later cataloged.
No more hidden drawers? They checked.
None.
Good.
Sometimes there is not another compartment.
Thank God.
Then I returned soup service after medical leave.
Not yet full maybe chapter 5. Fine.
At this stage, my body still flinched around glass cabinets.
I told Dr. Patel.
He suggested therapy.
I went.
No dramatic breakdown.
Just work.
First session:
“What bothers you most?”
“People saying I’m lying.”
Not cuts.
Interesting.
Then:
“Why?”
“Because Isabella almost made it official.”
False break-in accusation.
My employment record.
I realized.
Then I asked house manager for written correction now, before case ends.
She provided:
Claire Dawson had authorized work reason on upper floor and is not accused by Moretti household of unauthorized study entry.
Good.
I kept copy.
May you like
Paper can protect too.
That helped.
