Chapter 3

Luca did not say hello.
He stared at the screen.
Adrian stared back.
Then:
“You look like Carlo.”
Wrong sentence.
Luca’s face hardened.
“Do not start with him.”
Adrian nodded once.
“Fair.”
Then Michael said:
“This call is being recorded with everyone’s consent.”
Adrian looked toward someone offscreen.
Rachel Monroe appeared.
“We consent.”
Then Luca asked:
“Are you Adrian Moretti?”
“Yes.”
“Can you prove it?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“DNA.”
“Fingerprints from old corporate records if usable.”
“Medical history.”
“School records.”
“Family facts.”
“Whatever the court requires.”
“Then why haven’t you?”
Adrian looked down.
“Because I was a coward.”
No excuse first.
That surprised everyone.
Then:
“And because I had legal problems I convinced myself would destroy everyone around me if I came back.”
“What problems?”
Rachel intervened.
“He will explain at a high level here.”
“Detailed admissions go through counsel.”
Good.
Adrian said:
“The year before the crash, I guaranteed debt for a private development company.”
“Without board approval.”
Luca frowned.
“What company?”
“Arbor Crest Development.”
Michael knew it.
Old failed luxury-condo project.
Adrian continued:
“I also signed side letters that made Moretti-related assets appear available as support when they were not formally pledged.”
“Fraud?”
Rachel said:
“Potential civil misrepresentation.”
“There was also a federal inquiry at the time.”
“No criminal charge was ever filed against Adrian.”
Adrian added:
“I knew the documents were improper.”
There.
No sanitizing.
Then plane crash.
He had flown:
Duluth to Thunder Bay
with pilot, Nathan Cole.
Weather deteriorated.
Engine trouble.
Aircraft went down:
near lake.
Adrian survived:
impact,
burns,
broken ribs.
Pilot died.
How did Adrian vanish?
A commercial fishing crew found:
debris and Adrian
hours later.
Not within official search zone.
They took him:
to a small Canadian clinic.
He had:
no wallet.
No phone.
Severe concussion.
For two days, staff knew him as:
unknown male.
Then memory returned enough.
He gave:
mother’s maiden surname,
Avery.
Daniel Avery.
Why?
Fear.
He had learned from television:
plane missing,
pilot dead,
Moretti executive presumed lost.
He thought:
If I am dead, creditors cannot force me to testify.
If I am dead, the federal inquiry cannot reach family.
If I am dead, Luca and Carlo can say they knew nothing.
Terrible logic.
But fear often sounds practical inside the person having it.
Then:
“Did you tell the clinic who you were?”
“No.”
“Did you use fake documents?”
“Eventually.”
There.
Adrian admitted:
a fixer in Montreal helped him obtain identity documents based on:
a real deceased infant record.
Serious.
Rachel said:
“That conduct has been disclosed to current counsel.”
“He is preparing to address identity and tax issues with authorities.”
No procedural details.
Good.
Then Adrian lived:
Canada,
Portugal,
back to Canada.
He consulted:
privately
for hotel renovation firms
under Daniel Avery.
Paid taxes under:
that identity.
Again:
wrong.
Not glamorous.
Then Luca asked:
“Did you know Dad died?”
Adrian’s eyes closed.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Within hours of public announcement.”
“Did you come back?”
“No.”
“Call?”
“No.”
“Funeral?”
“No.”
“You watched?”
“Online.”
Luca stood.
Walked out of camera frame.
Nobody stopped him.
He returned:
thirty seconds later.
Then:
“Did you know I was searching for you?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Public notices.”
“Private investigator ads.”
“Rachel later told me.”
“Rachel knew?”
Rachel answered:
“Not at the beginning.”
“I began representing Adrian two years ago.”
So:
six years alone or through other counsel.
Then presumed-death proceeding.
Adrian knew.
He had:
Google alerts,
lawyer monitoring.
He chose:
not to intervene.
Why?
“Because by then returning meant admitting everything.”
Luca laughed.
“You mean the longer you lied, the harder it was to stop.”
“Yes.”
There.
Then shares.
Adrian insisted:
“I did not disappear to steal value from you.”
Luca said:
“You disappeared and now want eleven-point-eight percent back.”
“Yes.”
At least direct.
Then:
“Why now?”
“Because the Bellini merger would convert my shares into a new holding structure.”
“After that, unwinding ownership becomes harder.”
“And because Rachel told me if I stayed silent through that vote, I would be helping create a new false record.”
That mattered.
He had finally reached:
limit.
Then Vanessa.
Luca asked:
“Why contact her instead of me?”
Adrian said:
“Because Bellini had more to lose from delay.”
“I thought she would force a quiet solution.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
He had selected her:
for pressure.
Then:
“I also knew you would react personally.”
Luca said:
“I am reacting personally now.”
“Yes.”
“Difference?”
“None that excuses it.”
Good.
Then the lion.
Adrian explained.
His father Antonio had used:
the hollow repair cavity
for temporary document storage
when family lawyers met at the house.
Not secret family tradition.
Just old man’s habit.
Dominic Ferraro knew.
In 2017, Adrian had placed:
the proxy copy
inside brass cylinder
before one long overseas trip.
Why?
“If my briefcase was lost, Dad wanted a backup.”
No grand mystery.
Then eight years later, when Adrian needed proof to reach Luca without:
email,
company systems,
or Bellini mediation,
he asked Dominic:
place the new photograph in same lion
if Vanessa missed disclosure deadline.
Dominic did.
Then sent:
photocopy to archive as backup.
Luca asked:
“Did you know staff could find it?”
“I expected the archive copy would reach Michael or you.”
“You sent it to HOUSEHOLD RECORDS.”
“I did not know your current archive routing.”
Exactly.
He used:
old map of house.
Living system had changed.
Then:
“Did you know Vanessa might try to stop it?”
“I thought she would tell you.”
“She hurt Emma.”
Adrian’s face changed.
He looked toward me for first time.
“I’m sorry.”
I said nothing.
Because:
his apology was not mine to make easier.
Then:
“I did not intend—”
I interrupted.
“I know.”
“You also did not ask who would be carrying your secret.”
That stopped him.
Good.
Then Luca looked at me.
Not angry.
Surprised.
Adrian nodded.
“You’re right.”
Then Michael returned to:
legal questions.
First:
presumed-death order.
Adrian would file:
petition to vacate.
He would personally appear:
under security,
court-controlled process.
Second:
identity documents.
Separate authorities.
Third:
tax corrections.
Separate.
Fourth:
shares.
Probate and corporate counsel.
No one would decide:
in library.
Then voting history.
Independent law firm:
Barton Hale
was hired by:
Moretti board special committee.
They reviewed:
eight years of votes involving Adrian shares.
Period one:
Adrian missing,
Carlo proxy holder alive.
Potentially valid if proxy enforceable.
Period two:
Carlo dead,
court conservator voting routine matters.
Valid under court orders unless later reversed.
Period three:
Adrian presumed dead,
shares distributed to Continuity Trust.
Most sensitive.
One year.
Major votes:
four.
1. refinancing.
2. sale of two minor hotels.
3. executive compensation plan.
4. approval to negotiate Bellini merger.
Did any outcome depend solely on Adrian block?
Only:
Bellini negotiation authorization.
Not final merger.
That reduced damage.
Then:
refinancing passed without his votes.
hotel sales passed without.
comp plan passed without.
So even if share status changed, outcomes likely remained.
Corporate counsel wrote:
do not assume invalidity.
Court orders and good-faith reliance protect many actions.
Specific relief depends on jurisdiction and facts.
Plausible fiction.
Then Adrian’s share economics.
Dividends during missing years:
held in:
court-controlled reserve.
After presumed death:
distributed to trust.
Trust still held:
most cash.
Not spent by Luca personally.
Good.
That made restitution simpler.
Then Bellini merger.
Paused.
Independent valuation updated.
Because Adrian alive:
he had right to:
information,
vote if court restored,
perhaps negotiate class rights.
Adrian asked for:
board seat.
Luca said:
“No.”
Adrian stared.
“I am a shareholder.”
“Maybe.”
“That does not automatically make you a director.”
Good.
Independent nomination process.
Then one issue:
Vanessa’s family.
Bellini Venue Group financing commitment expired:
in thirty-one days.
If merger delayed:
bridge financing costs.
Vanessa feared:
thirty million.
Actual revised estimate:
six-point-two million maximum incremental cost
if delayed two months.
Her thirty-million figure included:
worst-case refinancing and breakup exposure.
She had inflated:
fear.
Not necessarily lying intentionally.
She believed:
catastrophe.
That matters.
Then special committee asked:
should Bellini deal be abandoned due conflict?
No automatic.
Business merits separate.
Bellini venues:
profitable.
Strategic.
Price:
reasonable.
The deal could survive:
truth.
Maybe.
Then my case.
Police charged Vanessa:
misdemeanor battery.
She entered:
not-guilty initially.
Civil lawyer contacted.
Luca offered:
company lawyer.
I declined.
Independent counsel.
Good.
Workers’ compensation covered:
medical.
No one tied:
employment
to legal cooperation.
Mrs. Alvarez put:
that in writing.
Then Vanessa moved:
out of estate
temporarily.
Not because Luca ordered:
humiliation.
Because:
no-contact condition with me
and relationship crisis.
She stayed:
hotel.
Engagement:
paused.
Ring remained:
with her at first.
No dramatic removal.
Then Dominic Ferraro.
He arrived:
two days later
with lawyer.
Eighty-one.
Walking cane.
Still formal.
He looked at broken lion.
His face fell.
“Antonio would kill me.”
Luca said:
“He’s dead.”
Dominic sighed.
“Then he would haunt me.”
First joke anyone made.
Then:
“Why did you do this?”
Dominic answered:
“Because Adrian asked.”
“Because I knew the proxy was there.”
“Because I believed Luca deserved proof before merger vote.”
“Why not call me?”
“Adrian forbade direct contact until deadline.”
Luca stared.
“And you obeyed a man who had let us think he was dead.”
Dominic looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
There.
Old loyalty.
Then Michael asked:
“Did you have authority to enter the statue?”
“No legal authority.”
“I had permission to be in library.”
“I used knowledge from old employment.”
Then:
“Did you send archive copy?”
“Yes.”
“Why HOUSEHOLD RECORDS?”
“That was where Antonio’s private papers went.”
Twenty years ago.
No longer.
Systems change.
Then Luca asked:
“If Emma had not found it?”
“Michael would have.”
“I planned to call him the next morning.”
Maybe.
But:
not guaranteed.
Then Dominic saw my bandage.
He said:
“I am sorry.”
I answered:
“Please stop making me the place everyone sends their regret.”
Silence.
Then:
“Fix the process.”
That sentence followed the family for years.
Not because I was wise.
Because I was tired.
Then the court date arrived.
Adrian Moretti walked:
into Cook County courthouse
under his own name.
Cameras outside.
No secret entrance.
No mafia convoy.
One man.
Gray suit.
Scarred hand.
Older.
The headline hit before lunch:
DEAD MORETTI HEIR RETURNS AFTER EIGHT YEARS.
Luca hated:
heir.
Adrian was:
uncle,
shareholder,
problem.
Not prince.
Then in court Adrian swore:
“I am Adrian Joseph Moretti.”
The judge looked at him for a long time.
Then:
“You understand that the law does not treat eight years of voluntary absence as a clerical inconvenience.”
Adrian answered:
“Yes, Your Honor.”
Good.
May you like
The dead man had returned.
Now he had to live with what the living had done in his absence—and what they had done because of it.
