Chapter 4

The independent family-safety review took sixteen months.
Three hundred pages.
Dominic hated it.
Good.
It did not call Camille a mastermind.
It did not call Mia a star witness.
It did not call Hannah a hero.
It called the central failure:
A known threatening individual remained outside coordinated risk management because family members handled danger privately, schedule information was insufficiently protected, and informal household authority discouraged timely reporting.
Boring.
Accurate.
Then recommendations.
Threats:
report.
Good.
Extortion:
do not privately manage.
Good.
School schedule:
restricted.
Good.
Family contacts:
documented.
Good.
Then child testimony.
One forensic interview if possible.
Avoid repeated retelling.
Good.
Then household staff.
No pressure to preserve evidence physically at personal risk.
Good.
Then Hannah became senior family-services coordinator.
More authority.
Her first mistake came quickly.
A mother wanted her child’s transport canceled because the father was “not safe.”
Hannah almost did it.
Then checked custody order.
Father still authorized.
Clinical team and legal reviewed.
Good.
Family fear ≠ automatic authority.
Then Dominic and Hannah continued dating.
Dinner.
Walks.
Museum.
One evening he asked:
“Can I kiss you?”
“No.”
He nodded.
“Okay.”
Three weeks later Hannah kissed him first.
Good.
Then Mia and Rose therapy.
Speech returned unevenly.
Rose more talkative.
Mia sometimes silent for days after court news.
Good.
No linear recovery.
Then one therapist warned Dominic:
“Do not reward speech like performance.”
He stopped saying:
Good girl for talking.
Instead:
listened.
Good.
Then one morning Mia said nothing at breakfast.
Dominic did not panic.
Good.
Then school reforms tested.
A reporter called pretending to be a family driver.
Office refused to confirm attendance.
Good.
Then a genuine emergency.
Dominic’s driver changed.
School called verified number before release.
Good.
Slower.
Safer.
Then Camille requested mediated meeting with Dominic after release from custody years later? Too early maybe no, but can request after sentence later. Keep no meeting yet.
Then Marcus Hale appealed unrelated evidence? Not needed.
Then Isabelle’s files.
Family archive contained her notebooks.
Not all became police evidence.
Relevant safety pages copied.
Private reflections remained sealed.
Good.
Privacy after death.
Then one journal entry mentioned Camille lovingly.
Dominic found it hard.
Isabelle had trusted her once.
Good.
People can be loved and later betray.
No need rewrite all history.
Then another entry:
Camille is trying to fix Marcus herself. She thinks control is the same as safety.
There.
That line hurt.
Then Hannah’s injuries.
One hand scar tightened.
At work she asked for ergonomic keyboard.
Received.
No drama.
Then a child at rehab center saw her cheek scar and asked:
“Did someone hurt you?”
Hannah answered:
“I got hurt in a struggle.”
Enough.
No family crime story owed.
Then Dominic once sent a security car to pick Hannah up without asking after a late shift.
She called.
“Don’t do that again.”
He paused.
“I thought—”
“I know.”
Then:
“Ask.”
Good.
Protection can become control.
Then he asked next time.
She said yes.
Good.
Then Mia and Rose met Hannah socially outside house.
Zoo.
No family branding.
Rose held Hannah’s hand.
Mia did not.
Fine.
Then household school-info policy extended to:
medical appointments;
therapy schedules;
travel.
Need-to-know.
Good.
Then one relative complained:
“We’re family.”
Security answered:
“That isn’t an access credential.”
Good.
Then family review discussed whether Camille should ever see girls again.
Dominic wanted no.
Therapist said:
decision can remain no.
Children’s views matter as they age.
Good.
No forced reconciliation.
Then Rose said:
“Not now.”
Mia:
“Never.”
Dominic accepted.
Good.
Maybe later changes.
Maybe not.
Then music box.
A conservator repaired hinge.
No hidden compartment display.
Good.
Then one day Rose put stickers on the bottom.
Dominic almost objected.
Stopped.
Good.
Object belongs to living child more than memorial aesthetics.
The fourth correction was that grief can honor the dead without freezing the living into permanent roles, permanent silence, or permanent fear.
The review also required threat-management decisions to expire into reassessment. A person once considered risky was not automatically restricted forever without current reason.
Relevant parts of Isabelle’s journals were authenticated but kept private beyond the case. A true document did not become public property merely because it helped explain one event.
