Chapter 3

We returned to the Moretti estate at 10:41 p.m.

The birthday roses were still wrapped around the front columns.

The house looked prepared for celebration.

Inside, it felt like a siege.

Vanessa stood in the main drawing room with two guards by the door.

She had changed nothing.

Same champagne dress.

Same diamonds at her ears.

Same perfect hair.

Only her face was different.

Angrier.

“You dragged me out of my own dinner.”

Luca walked past her.

“It was my dinner.”

“You embarrassed me in front of forty-two people.”

“My condolences.”

She stared at him.

Then at me.

Her expression turned sharp.

“You brought the maid?”

Luca stopped.

He looked over his shoulder.

“Her name is Emma.”

Vanessa laughed.

“I know her name.”

“Then use it.”

Silence.

That small defense should not have affected me.

It did.

I hated that it did.

Luca entered the library.

Rachel followed with the sealed evidence case from the bank.

Marco closed the doors after us.

Vanessa tried to follow.

One guard blocked her.

She looked at Luca.

“Seriously?”

“Yes.”

“You cannot lock me out of a family discussion.”

“This is not a family discussion.”

Her face tightened.

“What am I then?”

Luca looked at her.

“Currently?”

He paused.

“Evidence.”

I almost looked away.

Vanessa did not.

She stepped backward as if he had slapped her.

Luca turned to Marco.

“Search the restaurant photo.”

“The chef?”

“Yes.”

Marco had already sent the image through facial recognition.

He opened a tablet.

“Name is Thomas Vale.”

Rachel frowned.

“I know that name.”

“Former paramedic. Private security contractor. Worked for Bellini Capital five years ago.”

Vanessa’s voice came through the door.

“That proves nothing.”

Luca ignored her.

Marco continued.

“He entered the restaurant today using a temporary kitchen credential.”

“Who approved it?”

“Event coordinator.”

“Who gave her the vendor list?”

Marco checked.

“Vanessa’s assistant.”

Luca exhaled.

“Find Thomas.”

“Already looking.”

Rachel opened the black ledger.

The first page contained dates.

Amounts.

Charities.

Property names.

And initials.

AB.

PB.

DH.

I stopped breathing.

DH.

Daniel Hart.

My father.

Rachel saw my face.

“Emma.”

I pointed.

“That’s him.”

Luca came around the table.

The entry beside DH read:

AUDIT HOLD — $4.8M — DOCUMENT COPY RETAINED.

Date: twelve years earlier.

Two years before my father died.

Next entry:

DH MEETING REFUSED.

Then:

REMOVE ACCESS.

Then a date.

The date of my father’s car accident.

I sat down.

I did not remember deciding to.

Luca looked at Rachel.

“What does remove access mean?”

“I don’t know.”

Marco did.

“Could mean terminate credentials.”

“Could mean something else.”

I could hear my father’s voice in my head.

You don’t need to understand everything adults do, Em.

I had been sixteen the first time he said that.

He had come home late.

His shirt was torn.

My mother asked what happened.

He said he tripped in a parking garage.

I believed him.

Until now.

I rubbed my hands over my face.

Pain from the bruise reminded me where I was.

Luca crouched in front of me.

The most powerful man in the room lowered himself until we were eye level.

“Emma.”

I looked at him.

“Your father’s death is not your fault.”

“I didn’t say it was.”

“You’re thinking you should have known.”

My throat tightened.

“How do you know?”

“Because I’m thinking the same thing about my mother.”

For a second, neither of us spoke.

Then Vanessa shouted from the hall.

“Luca!”

He stood.

“What?”

“I need to talk to you.”

“Talk.”

“Alone.”

“No.”

Her voice lowered.

“Please.”

That word made him hesitate.

He opened the library door.

Vanessa stood between the guards.

Her face had changed.

Fear now.

Real fear.

“I didn’t know about Daniel Hart.”

I stood.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I swear.”

“Why should she believe you?” Luca asked.

Vanessa ignored him.

She looked directly at me.

“My father never told me names.”

“What names?”

She swallowed.

“The auditors.”

Rachel stepped closer.

“Plural?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

There.

Another mistake.

Luca’s face hardened.

“How many?”

“I don’t know.”

“How many auditors did your father threaten?”

“I said I don’t know.”

“Then what do you know?”

She looked toward the guards.

“I know my father used Thomas Vale for problems.”

“What kind of problems?”

“Security.”

“Security doesn’t carry syringes in kitchens.”

Vanessa flinched.

Luca saw.

“You knew Thomas was there.”

“Yes.”

The room went still.

My stomach turned.

“Why?”

Vanessa looked at Luca.

“He told me he needed to check your food.”

Luca laughed once.

A dark sound.

“Check it for what?”

“Poison.”

“By bringing a syringe?”

“I didn’t see the syringe.”

“You met him in the office.”

“He said there had been a threat.”

“From who?”

“My father.”

Luca stared.

“Your father warned you someone wanted to poison me?”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

Vanessa shouted, “Because he said the threat came from your own people!”

Silence.

Her breathing shook.

“He said Marco was compromised.”

Marco’s face did not change.

Luca looked at him.

Then back at her.

“My father said if I told you, you would take everything outside the Bellini security network and the real threat would disappear.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It did when he said it.”

Rachel muttered, “Fear usually does.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I was trying to protect you.”

I looked at the bruises on my arms.

Something hot moved through me.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t get to say that.”

“You hurt me because of a key.”

“You stole from me.”

“I picked it up off the floor.”

“You hid it.”

“After you hit me.”

She stepped forward.

The guard moved.

Luca raised his hand.

Vanessa stopped.

I continued.

“You weren’t protecting him.”

My voice shook.

“You were protecting whatever you thought happened at midnight.”

Her face changed.

Luca saw.

“What happens at midnight, Vanessa?”

She looked away.

He moved closer.

“What?”

“My father said the trust transfer would destroy the Bellini financing agreement.”

Rachel frowned.

“What agreement?”

“I don’t know.”

“Try harder.”

Vanessa wiped at one eye.

“He said your father borrowed money from Bellini Capital years ago. If the trust transferred cleanly, Luca could call the debt and force a review.”

Rachel looked at Luca.

“That explains the ledger.”

Vanessa nodded.

“He said if we were married before the review, Bellini exposure could be protected through spousal privilege and shared ownership.”

Rachel laughed in disbelief.

“That is not how any of this works.”

“I know that now.”

“No,” Rachel said. “You know it because you got caught.”

Vanessa looked at Luca.

“I loved you.”

Past tense.

He noticed.

His face went blank.

“Loved?”

She closed her mouth.

Before anyone could speak, Marco’s radio crackled.

“Gate team to Marco.”

He answered.

“Go.”

“A vehicle just hit the west service barrier.”

Marco’s expression sharpened.

“Occupants?”

“Driver fled on foot.”

“What vehicle?”

“Catering van.”

Vanessa went white.

Luca saw.

“Thomas.”

She whispered, “Maybe.”

Marco spoke into the radio.

“Lock west grounds. Thermal search.”

Another voice answered.

“Copy.”

Then:

“We found something in the van.”

“What?”

“Medical case.”

Luca looked at Vanessa.

The guard continued.

“Multiple syringes.”

Rachel swore.

“And one printed instruction sheet.”

Marco’s eyes narrowed.

“Read it.”

Static.

Then:

SUBJECT: LUCA MORETTI.

ADMINISTER AT 11:45 P.M.

EXPECTED CARDIAC EVENT BETWEEN 11:50 AND 11:55.

The room went dead.

Luca checked the clock.

11:02.

Forty-three minutes.

Marco said, “Anything else?”

The guard hesitated.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“A second subject.”

My stomach turned.

“Name?”

The radio cracked.

Then the guard said:

“Emma Hart.”

Nobody moved.

I stared at Marco.

Then Luca.

Then Vanessa.

Luca’s face became something cold.

“What time for Emma?”

Marco asked.

The answer came.

“Immediately after Luca.”

Luca turned toward me.

His voice was low.

“Someone doesn’t just want the ledger hidden.”

Marco had the restaurant photo enlarged on the library screen. Thomas Vale’s face sharpened until I could see the small scar beneath his left eye. I knew I had seen him before.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at me.

I stepped closer to the screen. “He was at the house last month.”

Vanessa’s head snapped toward me.

“Where?” Luca asked.

“Service driveway. He said he was checking fire suppression equipment.”

Marco swore softly. “We outsource that.”

“He had paperwork.”

“Fake paperwork,” Rachel said.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Luca saw it. “You knew.”

“I knew my father sent someone to inspect the kitchen systems.”

“Why would your father inspect my kitchen?”

“He said the birthday dinner made you a target.”

Luca stared at her. “So for a month, you let his man map my service entrances.”

“I thought he was protecting you.”

“Did you ever ask me?”

“No.”

The answer came out small.

That was when Marco pulled up the access history. Thomas had entered the property four times in six weeks. Kitchen. Wine cellar. Staff corridor. Electrical room.

The last location made everyone quiet.

“The blackout,” I said.

Marco nodded. “He knew exactly where to cut backup power.”

Luca turned away from Vanessa. I watched his shoulders stiffen. This was no longer one bad night. Someone had rehearsed it.

And Vanessa had opened the doors for them one inspection at a time.

May you like

He looked at the initials beside my father’s name.

“They want the Hart family erased from the story.”
