Chapter 5

Five years after the brass lake-house key fell onto Adrian’s plate, Hannah no longer worked in private service.

She was director of events at the art college.

She and Adrian had been together four years.

Then married.

Small ceremony.

Independent prenup.

Separate counsel.

Hannah kept career.

No Romano board role.

No household employment.

Good.

Marcus attended.

Camille did not.

No drama.

Then someone joked:

“Any missing cousins tonight?”

Hannah stared.

The guest apologized immediately.

Enough.

Not every bad joke required punishment.

Then Romano Maritime became boring.

At least more boring.

Marcus held eight percent.

Adrian held controlling block with siblings and trusts.

Independent directors increased.

Emergency proxies reviewed annually.

No missing-person shortcuts.

Then Marcus finally accepted one board-observer seat.

For one year.

He hated meetings.

Resigned.

Rights are not duties.

Then one shareholder vote split Adrian and Marcus.

Marcus opposed acquisition.

Adrian supported.

Independent shareholders decided.

Acquisition passed.

Marcus lost.

No one called him disloyal.

Good.

Then acquisition underperformed.

Marcus did not say I told you so for two weeks.

Then did.

Normal.

Then Hannah’s art college faced donor pressure.

A wealthy patron wanted a private studio used for personal events because he funded renovation.

Hannah said no.

Donor threatened to reduce gift.

He did.

Fine.

Money did not create property authority.

Then Adrian said:

“You left money on the table.”

Hannah stared.

He smiled.

“Bad joke.”

“Yes.”

Good.

Then Camille completed probation.

She worked in compliance consulting outside Romano entities.

Could she work again?

Yes.

Restrictions expired where appropriate.

Accountability without permanent exile.

Then Étienne Laurent died.

Natural.

No final confession.

No hidden letter.

Marcus did not attend funeral.

Adrian did.

Different choices.

Then the lake house’s new owners renovated basement into wine room.

A magazine published photos.

Marcus saw.

Laughed.

Good.

A place can become someone else’s ordinary house.

Then the brass key.

After the case, property records showed it belonged to the Romano estate and had been loaned to Laurent counsel years earlier.

Adrian asked Hannah if she wanted it.

“No.”

He didn’t either.

It was destroyed when the locks changed after sale.

Perfect.

No trauma relic.

Then Hannah’s voice.

Mostly normal.

When tired, slightly rough.

At a lecture she lost it halfway through.

Paused.

Drank water.

Continued.

No shame.

Then Adrian’s habit.

He sometimes asked too many questions when she seemed quiet.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

“Hannah—”

She stared.

He stopped.

Then:

“Ask once.”

“Okay.”

Good.

Care without surveillance.

Then Marcus started a marine-survey company in Chicago.

Not Romano-funded.

Adrian offered investment once.

Marcus said no.

Never asked again.

Good.

Then one newspaper called Marcus “the returned heir.”

He requested correction.

He was shareholder.

Not heir to everything.

Good.

Then family records stopped using “missing presumed dead” as shorthand after court correction.

Public history page said:

Marcus Romano was missing for eight years and later returned; a prior presumed-death order was vacated.

Accurate.

No erasure of wrong record.

Then one cousin asked:

“Why leave the mistake visible?”

Marcus answered:

“Because it happened.”

Good.

Correction is not deletion.

Then Hannah and Adrian hosted dinner.

Ten guests.

Sea bass.

Gray silk napkins.

Coincidence.

Hannah smiled when she saw them.

Adrian asked:

“Change them?”

“No.”

Then:

“They’re napkins.”

Good.

The scarf did not own the color gray.

Hannah and Adrian’s prenup made clear marriage did not grant her authority over Romano companies, security, or family trusts. Intimacy was not a governance title.

That was the fifth correction.

The family history page also added a contact-preference field. Marcus could be recognized as family and shareholder without receiving invitations, press requests, or ceremonial obligations he did not want. Recognition did not require access.

Hannah and Adrian kept separate professional lives after marriage. If the art college ever did business with a Romano company, both recused from the relevant decisions. Marriage did not become a shortcut through procurement.

Marcus sometimes skipped family holidays without explanation. Nobody treated absence as rejection or instability anymore. A person could simply decline an invitation.
