Chapter 9

Luca did not shout.

That frightened me more.

He became completely still beside the damaged SUV.

“Who did Nico recognize?”

Rachel held the phone tighter.

The officer on the other end spoke.

She listened.

Then looked at Marco.

“Security footage shows an older woman.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

“What older woman?”

Rachel turned the phone so we could see the still image.

Gray coat.

Dark hair streaked with silver.

Thin face.

Nico stood inside the doorway looking up at her.

Marco inhaled sharply.

“Mrs. Rainer.”

Nico’s mother’s friend.

The woman who had cared for him after Sofia died.

The woman everybody assumed had become too sick to continue.

Luca stared at the image.

“She handed him to Dominic?”

Vanessa sat against the truck tire, guarded by two agents.

She laughed bitterly.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

“You know her?” Rachel asked.

Vanessa nodded.

“Her real name is Marianne Vance.”

Marco’s face changed.

“Peter Vance’s sister.”

“Yes.”

Nico had not been sent from one unrelated caretaker to another.

He had been inside a network connected to the Moretti family the entire time.

Luca walked toward Vanessa.

“Where did she take him?”

“I don’t know.”

He crouched.

“Wrong answer.”

“I’m telling the truth.”

“You have lied for eight years.”

“So has everyone in your family.”

“Where is my son?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I don’t know.”

She looked at Rachel.

“But I know what Dominic wants.”

“The drive?”

“No.”

“He already believes you copied it.”

We had.

Three times.

One copy with federal agents.

One encrypted with Marco.

One hidden where not even Luca knew.

Vanessa continued.

“He wants Luca angry.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because angry men make useful evidence.”

She looked at Luca.

“He has recordings of you threatening people. Meetings. Fights. Old business disputes.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“None involving a child.”

“No. But add a kidnapping, a public confrontation, maybe a gun, and suddenly Dominic has a story.”

Rachel understood first.

“He wants Luca to assault him on camera.”

Vanessa nodded.

“Then he files emergency guardianship papers claiming Nico is unsafe with Luca.”

Luca laughed coldly.

“He kidnapped the child.”

“Through intermediaries.”

“He’ll still lose.”

“Eventually.”

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“But trust control can shift temporarily during a guardianship dispute.”

Marco cursed.

Dominic did not need to win forever.

Only long enough to transfer assets, destroy records, and disappear.

Rachel began issuing orders.

Airports.

Private fields.

Highway cameras.

Marianne Vance’s phone records.

Within forty minutes, they found her car.

Abandoned beside a small municipal airport.

Security video showed Nico walking beside Marianne.

Not dragged.

Not restrained.

Confused, but calm.

She took him into a hangar.

Ten minutes later, a helicopter lifted off.

Registered to a Moretti subsidiary.

Flight plan filed toward the coast.

Luca stared at the route.

“Not the island.”

Rachel looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Range. That helicopter can’t reach Saint Aurelia.”

“Refuel?”

“Possible. But Dominic wants me close enough to react.”

I remembered something Vanessa had said.

Your father’s island.

An island connected to Salvatore.

But maybe not the one overseas.

“Did your father own anything on the coast?”

Luca looked at me.

“A hunting property.”

“Island?”

“No.”

“Water?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Maryland.”

Rachel was already searching.

A Moretti shell company still owned six hundred acres along the Chesapeake.

Private dock.

Old landing strip.

Large main house.

The helicopter’s last radar contact was seventy miles north of it.

“That’s it,” Luca said.

Rachel held up a hand.

“Maybe.”

“It’s it.”

“We verify before you run into a trap.”

He looked ready to fight her.

I stepped closer.

“Luca.”

His eyes came to me.

“If Dominic wants you reckless, don’t give him what he wants.”

For a second he looked furious that I was right.

Then he exhaled.

“Fine.”

Federal teams moved before dawn.

This time Luca agreed to stay behind the first line.

Not because Rachel ordered him.

Because Nico needed a father more than he needed a man with a gun.

I stayed with him in an unmarked vehicle two miles from the property.

Marco sat in front.

Vanessa had been taken into federal custody.

Before they drove her away, she looked at me.

“Claire.”

I almost ignored her.

Then stopped.

“What?”

Her eyes went to my bandaged arm.

“I was wrong about you.”

“That doesn’t fix anything.”

“I know.”

“Why did you hurt me?”

She looked away.

“Because Dominic told me Sofia trusted you. I thought you had the drive.”

“You could have asked.”

“And you would have told me?”

“No.”

A broken smile crossed her face.

“Exactly.”

I felt no sympathy.

But I understood one thing.

Vanessa had spent years becoming the kind of person Dominic could use.

That did not excuse her.

It explained the shape of the damage.

At 6:12 a.m., Rachel’s voice came through the radio.

“Visual on child.”

Luca stopped breathing.

I grabbed his hand before thinking.

He held mine.

“Status?” Marco asked.

“Alive. Main house, second floor. One adult female with him.”

“Dominic?”

“Not visible.”

Then gunfire crackled through the radio.

Luca surged forward.

Marco locked the doors.

“Don’t.”

“My son is in there.”

“And twelve trained agents are closer.”

Another burst.

Then silence.

The radio hissed.

“Officer down. Suspect moving east.”

“Which suspect?”

“Male. Dominic Moretti.”

Luca reached for the door.

Then a second transmission came.

“Child secure.”

He froze.

Again:

“Child secure. Repeat, child secure.”

Luca sagged back against the seat.

His eyes closed.

My hand was still in his.

Neither of us moved it.

Five minutes later, Nico came out of the house wrapped in a federal jacket.

Luca was out of the vehicle before anybody stopped him.

Nico saw him.

“Dad!”

He ran.

Luca dropped to one knee and caught him so hard both nearly fell.

Nico cried loudly this time.

No silent tears.

No pretending.

Luca held the back of his head.

“I’m here.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Stop saying that.”

“I opened the door.”

“You trusted someone who raised you. That is not a crime.”

“She said Grandma needed me.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t know.”

“I know.”

Luca pressed his forehead to Nico’s.

“None of this is yours.”

Rachel approached.

“We have Marianne in custody.”

“And Dominic?”

“Running through marshland. Teams are closing.”

“Alive?”

“For now.”

Nico looked at me over Luca’s shoulder.

“Claire.”

I went to him.

He reached one arm toward me.

I knelt beside them.

For a strange second, the three of us were locked together in a muddy driveway while armed agents ran past.

It should have felt wrong.

Instead it felt terrifyingly natural.

Then Nico whispered, “Grandma’s here.”

Luca pulled back.

“What?”

“Grandma Elena.”

Rachel went still.

“Where?”

“In the basement.”

Everything moved again.

Agents entered.

Seven minutes later, Elena Moretti emerged on a stretcher.

Bruised.

Dehydrated.

Alive.

Luca stood beside her.

She reached for his hand.

“My boy.”

His face hardened.

“Not yet.”

Her eyes closed.

“I deserve that.”

Nico watched from behind me.

Elena saw him.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Nicolas.”

He stiffened.

She knew his full name.

Not from yesterday.

From years.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Nico did not answer.

Then a shout came from the marsh.

Agents moving.

A helicopter overhead.

Minutes later, Dominic Moretti was dragged from the reeds in handcuffs.

Mud covered his expensive clothes.

Blood ran from a cut above one eye.

He saw Luca.

And smiled.

“There he is.”

Luca did not move.

Dominic laughed.

“You going to hit me?”

Rachel’s eyes flicked toward Luca.

The trap.

One last attempt.

Luca looked at his uncle.

Then at Nico.

“No.”

Dominic’s smile faded.

Luca stepped closer, but not close enough to touch him.

“You wanted me angry because that’s the only version of me you know how to control.”

Dominic said nothing.

“You forgot something.”

“What?”

“I’m a father now.”

The words landed quietly.

Finally.

Completely.

Dominic’s face changed.

Federal agents led him away.

Then Elena called Luca’s name.

He turned.

She held something in one trembling hand.

A sealed envelope.

“I kept this from your father,” she said.

“What is it?”

“The only thing I did right.”

Luca took it.

On the front, in Sofia’s handwriting:

FOR LUCA, WHEN NICO IS SAFE.

Inside the Chesapeake house, investigators later found the room Dominic had prepared for his real objective.

It was not a prison cell.

That would have looked too obvious.

It was a child’s bedroom.

New clothes.

Books.

A gaming console.

A framed photograph of Sofia beside Nico’s bed.

On the desk sat legal papers petitioning for temporary guardianship.

The language described Luca as unstable, violent, and emotionally compromised by “recent revelations concerning paternity.”

Rachel showed us the documents after Nico had been taken for a medical check.

Luca read the first page.

Then the second.

His hands shook.

“He planned to keep Nico here and call it protection.”

“Yes,” Rachel said.

“There are draft statements from Marianne claiming Nico was frightened of you.”

I felt sick.

“Would she have signed?”

Rachel looked toward the house.

“She says Dominic threatened her brother before Peter died. After that, she believed she had no choice.”

Luca put the papers down.

“That phrase again.”

“What?” I asked.

“No choice.”

He looked exhausted.

“My family built an empire out of convincing people they had no choice.”

I touched his arm.

“You’re giving Nico choices.”

“Not enough.”

“You let him keep Caruso.”

His eyes came to mine.

“You let him decide when to call you Dad. You let him refuse Elena. You didn’t hit Dominic even when he wanted you to.”

Luca looked across the muddy property where agents were gathering evidence.

“Is that enough to make me different?”

“No.”

He almost laughed.

I continued.

“But it’s how you start.”

He nodded slowly.

Then Nico came through the doorway with a blanket around his shoulders.

He walked straight to Luca.

May you like

No hesitation.

Whatever Dominic had written in those papers, the child had already made his own decision.
