Adrian’s health declined normally with age.
Knees.
Blood pressure.
Hearing.
Nothing cinematic.
The older we became, the more I appreciated ordinary weakness.

A family can worry without taking control.
We signed advance directives openly.

Clear proxies.

Symmetry.
Good.
Nicholas’s hands worsened from arthritis.
He stopped boat repair entirely.
He hated that.

Badly at first.
Adrian teased him.

I laughed.

He threw it away.
Objects can finish their job.

The real original remained where it belonged.

Life outside them.
Nicholas eventually gave his last public lecture at the maritime school. He did not talk about disappearance. He talked about hull fatigue, maintenance records, and why a repair log should outlive the mechanic who wrote it.
I loved that.
People expected him to become a professional witness to his own trauma. He chose to teach boats.

Just said:

Nicholas smiled for the rest of the day.
