Chapter 5

Five years after Emma broke the piano, she no longer worked in private service.

She was director of conference operations.

She and Luca had been together four years.

Then they married.

Small ceremony.

Independent prenup.

Separate counsel.

Emma kept her career.

No Moretti board role.

No household employment.

Good.

Frank attended.

His suit fit badly.

Nobody cared.

Vanessa did not attend.

No drama.

One guest joked:

“Any films hidden in the piano?”

Emma stared.

The guest immediately said:

“Sorry.”

Emma nodded.

Enough.

Not every foolish joke required punishment.

The repaired grand piano played at the reception.

No canister.

No note.

No secret.

Just music.

Then the continuity trust became boring.

Annual reports.

Expired authorities.

Renewals.

Conflicts.

Independent-counsel notices.

One year:

zero emergency extensions.

A board member suggested reducing the review budget.

“Nothing happened,” he said.

Luca answered:

“Exactly.”

Good.

Controls can succeed by producing nothing dramatic.

Then Emma’s conference center faced its own crisis.

A major client executive died suddenly during an event.

Operations staff wanted one senior manager to receive unlimited emergency authority for seventy-two hours.

Emma asked:

“Scope?”

Silence.

“Spending cap?”

More silence.

“Review?”

The manager sighed.

“There isn’t time.”

“Then make the form shorter.”

Good.

Authority became narrow.

The event continued.

No scandal.

Then marriage developed ordinary friction.

Emma traveled.

Luca missed her.

He said:

“I miss you.”

Not:

come home.

Good.

Then Vanessa wrote Luca a letter years after probation.

I thought Anna’s death created a problem that had to be managed.

Then:

I understand now that using her death to justify authority was exactly what she feared.

And:

I am sorry I helped keep that from you.

No request for forgiveness.

Luca did not reply.

Choice.

Emma asked:

“Did it help?”

“Some.”

Then:

“Do you forgive her?”

“Parts.”

Good.

Then Frank moved to Arizona with his daughter.

Retirement.

No hidden archive.

He mailed terrible postcards.

One read:

NO PIANOS HERE.

Emma laughed.

Then Anna’s film reached retention review.

Legal proceedings were complete.

Options:

destroy original;

preserve sealed;

release publicly.

Anna’s family wanted sealed preservation.

Luca agreed.

No public screening.

A historian complained.

Public interest.

Archive counsel provided:

verified transcript of visual events;

frame descriptions;

document references.

Enough.

Privacy over spectacle.

Then the lake house was sold.

Not turned into memorial.

A family bought it.

Children played on the terrace.

Luca drove past once.

Did not stop.

Emma asked:

“Do you want to?”

“No.”

Then:

“I’m glad somebody else lives there.”

Good.

Places can become ordinary.

Then the broken decorative stand from the music room.

Police released it.

Household asked Luca whether it should be stored.

“No.”

Discarded.

No trauma relic.

Then Emma’s scars.

Thin lines on her shin.

One longer line on her thigh.

Occasional tightness.

She wore dresses when she wanted.

Did not when she didn’t.

No reclamation ceremony.

Then one evening she and Luca attended a recital.

A child crawled under the piano searching for a toy.

Staff laughed.

Emma watched.

A piano was furniture again.

Emma and Luca’s prenup also required separate counsel before either spouse could gain authority over the other’s trusts, companies, or medical decisions beyond ordinary legal defaults. Marriage did not silently recreate continuity control.

That was the fifth correction.

At home, Luca once began recording a contractor meeting on his phone without announcing it. Emma asked whether everyone knew. He stopped, told them, and restarted only after agreement. Small corrections mattered more than speeches.

Frank’s postcards became ordinary refrigerator clutter beside grocery lists and appointment reminders. That pleased Emma. A witness could become a retired old man again.

Emma’s marriage did not convert her into keeper of Luca’s grief. Some anniversaries he wanted company. Some he did not. She asked instead of assuming.
