Chapter 2

My father was not mysterious.
Thomas Dawson liked baseball.
Burned toast.
Hated parking tickets.
Worked as a customs broker near JFK for twenty-four years.
Died six years ago from a heart attack.
Real hospital.
Real funeral.
No secret resurrection.
Good.
I needed one stable fact.
Luca sat across from me in his library.
No Isabella.
She was with counsel.
Marco stood near the door.
Dana Wu? New universe maybe use Rachel Chen. Let's use independent attorney later.
Luca asked:
“Did your father ever mention Northbridge Export?”
“No.”
“Moretti?”
“No.”
“Bellini?”
“No.”
“Lake Como?”
“No.”
“Florence?”
“No.”
Good.
Then I remembered one thing.
“Marino.”
Luca looked up.
“What?”
“My father had a client named Marino Logistics.”
Marco searched.
No current company.
Old entity:
Marino Freight & Customs LLC.
Dissolved eighteen years ago.
Registered agent:
THOMAS DAWSON.
My father.
My stomach dropped.
“That was Dad’s company?”
“Maybe a client shell.”
Then owner:
NICHOLAS MARINO.
Alias?
Could be Nicholas Moretti.
Address:
Queens warehouse.
My father’s office building.
There.
Luca looked at me.
“Your father helped Nicholas.”
“Maybe.”
Again.
Facts.
Then Marco found federal customs archives.
Northbridge Export had shipments cleared by Thomas Dawson.
Italian machinery.
Ceramics.
Agricultural equipment.
And one declaration:
DECORATIVE HORSE VESSEL.
Destination:
Bellini residence.
Date ten years ago.
The exact sculpture.
My father had cleared it through customs.
My hands went cold.
So Nicholas knew my name because Dad moved the horse.
Not because I was special.
Relief.
Huge.
Then one invoice:
Contact in case of seizure:
CLAIRE DAWSON.
My name.
Age eighteen.
Why?
I stared.
“That makes no sense.”
Marco checked.
The phone number was not mine.
It belonged to a prepaid line.
So Nicholas used my name as code.
Maybe because Thomas had daughter Claire.
Why use it?
My father might have agreed.
We needed records.
Dad’s old files.
Storage unit?
No.
My mother was alive? In this story not specified. Let's set mother, Julia Dawson, alive in Florida.
I called.
“Mom.”
“Claire? Your voice sounds weird.”
“My face is swollen.”
“What?”
“I’m okay.”
“You are not starting with ‘I’m okay’ if your face is swollen.”
Fair.
Then:
“Did Dad ever work with a Nicholas Marino?”
Silence.
Too long.
“Mom.”
“Yes.”
There.
“What?”
“He was a client.”
“Moretti?”
Another silence.
“You know.”
“Yes.”
My heart sank.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because your father asked me not to.”
Of course.
“What did Nicholas want?”
“Customs help.”
“For what?”
“Documents.”
Not goods.
“Documents hidden in shipments.”
There.
My father helped smuggle records out of Italy?
Maybe.
“Illegal?”
Mom said:
“Your father said he was protecting evidence.”
“That is not answer.”
“No.”
Good.
Then:
“Did Dad know Isabella Bellini?”
“No.”
“Antonio Moretti?”
“Yes.”
My stomach turned.
“How?”
“Antonio tried to hire him.”
“For what?”
“To intercept Nicholas shipments.”
“Did Dad?”
“No.”
“Did Antonio threaten him?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“His license.”
“Did he succeed?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Your father kept copies.”
Of course.
Accountant/bookkeeper motif again? But customs records unique.
Then I asked:
“Why use my name?”
Mom was quiet.
“Because your father needed a code Antonio would not understand.”
“So he used his daughter.”
“Yes.”
I laughed without humor.
“Wonderful.”
“He never meant anyone to contact you.”
“But Nicholas did.”
“Not directly.”
“Still.”
“Yes.”
Mom sounded ashamed.
“I’m sorry.”
Good.
No protection speech.
Then:
“Where are Dad’s files?”
“Garage.”
“Florida?”
“Yes.”
Of course.
Luca offered jet.
I said no.
Then flight? Time. We can use secure courier, but story likes action.
Mom said:
“I can bring them.”
“No.”
“You’re injured.”
“So are you?”
“No.”
“Then stay.”
Good.
She shipped sealed with attorney via overnight.
Meanwhile Marco traced the false Claire Dawson who visited monastery.
Passport belonged to woman named Clara Dorsey? Fake ID.
Photo.
I looked.
Not familiar.
Isabella did.
“That’s my mother’s old secretary.”
Silence.
Name:
HELENA VOSS.
Alive.
Sixty-four.
Former Bellini household secretary.
She had used my name three months ago to collect records for Nicholas.
Why my name?
Because it remained the code.
My father’s code persisted.
Then Isabella said:
“Helena disappeared after Mom died.”
“Where?”
“Switzerland.”
Maybe.
Marco searched.
Current address:
Connecticut.
Great.
Not endless Europe.
Police contacted.
Helena agreed to speak with counsel.
No chase.
Good.
She came next day.
Elegant.
Silver hair.
No fear.
She saw Isabella.
“You finally opened the horse.”
Isabella looked down.
“Yes.”
“Too late.”
“What does that mean?”
“Nicholas already moved the archive.”
Luca leaned forward.
“Where is my uncle?”
Helena looked at him.
“Safe.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
There.
Confirmed.
Luca closed eyes.
Thirty years of family lie.
Then:
“Why did everyone say he died?”
“Antonio.”
“Why?”
“Because Nicholas discovered ghost payroll.”
“Explain.”
Helena opened folder.
Northbridge Export was not theft shell.
It was extraction route.
Nicholas used fake export invoices to identify phantom employees.
Antonio and Victor? Maybe Antonio and another Moretti executive used payroll accounts to siphon money.
Who benefited?
Helena said:
“Antonio.”
Silence.
“Bellini?”
“Victor’s father Edward was involved early, then withdrew.”
Isabella looked at her.
“My grandfather?”
“Yes.”
“What did he do?”
“He allowed Bellini bank accounts to receive transfers.”
“Did Victor know?”
“Later.”
So Victor’s family implicated, but maybe he later tried cleanup.
Then Nicholas confronted Antonio.
Antonio threatened criminal charges for embezzlement.
Nicholas disappeared voluntarily to preserve evidence.
Family announced death to avoid scandal.
Did parents know?
Luca’s mother Evelyn knew partly.
Again.
But this is separate universe. Fine.
Then Helena looked at me.
“Thomas Dawson kept the shipping copies.”
“Where?”
“Your mother has them.”
Yes.
Then:
“Your father was supposed to deliver one final package after Nicholas vanished.”
“What package?”
“A black ledger.”
“Did he?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Antonio found out.”
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?”
“Thomas hid it.”
“Where?”
Helena looked at Luca.
“Inside Moretti estate.”
Silence.
“Where?”
“She smiled faintly.
“In the only object Antonio never allowed anyone to move.”
The ceramic horse?
No, that's moved. Better a grandfather clock.
“The grandfather clock in the west hall.”
Of course.
Luca stood.
We went.
Clock had stood there forty years.
Never moved.
Inside lower cabinet, behind pendulum housing:
A narrow black ledger.
My father’s handwriting on envelope.
CLAIRE — THIS IS NOT YOUR PROBLEM.
I laughed.
“Dad.”
Then smaller:
BUT IF YOU FOUND IT, SOMEONE MADE IT YOUR PROBLEM.
Exactly.
Inside ledger:
Ghost employees.
Account numbers.
Transfers.
And one recurring recipient:
N.M. PROTECTION FUND.
Wait Nicholas himself?
Maybe he created fund for whistleblowers.
Need tension.
Luca saw.
“Nicholas was receiving money.”
Helena shook head.
“No.”
“That account name was planted.”
“By who?”
“Antonio.”
There.
To frame Nicholas.
But ledger included routing trace showing funds moved onward to:
A.M. PRIVATE.
Antonio Moretti.
Proof.
Then one final entry.
THOMAS DAWSON — $250,000.
My heart stopped.
My father had received money too.
And no note explained why.
Was he paid off?
Helena looked at me.
“That payment is why Nicholas stopped trusting him.”
Silence.
I stared at Dad’s handwriting.
Maybe my father had not only helped hide evidence.
Maybe he had also taken money from Antonio.
Helena Voss brought one more item to the interview.
A customs pouch.
Brown canvas.
Thomas Dawson’s initials.
My father’s.
I touched nothing until counsel cleared.
Inside:
Carbon copies of Northbridge declarations.
One photograph of Dad standing beside Nicholas.
No dramatic pose.
Warehouse.
Coffee cups.
Dad looked irritated.
On back:
NICK STILL DOESN’T UNDERSTAND CUSTOMS FORMS.
I laughed.
Helena smiled.
“Thomas wrote that.”
“Yes.”
“Did they like each other?”
“No.”
That surprised me.
“They trusted each other?”
“Eventually.”
“What’s difference?”
“Trust is not affection.”
Good.
Then Helena explained how my name became code.
Antonio had a habit of intercepting shipments linked to Nicholas.
Thomas suggested using a contact identity not connected to any company.
He chose “Claire Dawson” because I was eighteen, had no business records, and lived at home.
A terrible idea.
Dad knew later.
He wrote apology in one customs margin:
USING CHILD’S NAME WAS STUPID. CHANGE CODE AFTER THIS.
They did not.
Nicholas kept it.
That part was on him.
Good.
Then Helena produced a later note from Nicholas:
Claire Dawson code remains because Antonio already searched it and found nothing.
So my name became useful precisely because I had nothing to do with them.
That made me furious.
I told Helena.
She nodded.
“You should be.”
Good.
No “it protected you.”
Then we found Victor’s Florence flight.
He landed.
Italian counsel contacted local authorities.
No chase scene.
He went directly to the old Northbridge Ceramica workshop.
Why?
To retrieve a storage tube hidden inside kiln wall.
Local police arrived first.
Tube contained Bellini bank statements.
Edward Bellini’s accounts had received ghost-payroll transfers.
Victor apparently wanted them before Luca saw.
But he surrendered tube without fight.
Why?
Because he had already copied them.
Maybe.
Then he called Isabella.
She put on speaker with counsel.
“Dad.”
“You opened the horse.”
“Yes.”
“Where is Luca?”
“Not your concern.”
Good.
Victor paused.
“You sound angry.”
“I am.”
“I was trying to protect Bellini.”
“No.”
Silence.
“You were trying to control which truth we saw first.”
Victor said nothing.
There.
Then Luca asked:
“Why Florence?”
Victor exhaled.
“Because Edward’s accounts look worse without context.”
“What context?”
“Antonio used them after Edward withdrew consent.”
“Proof?”
“In the tube.”
Maybe.
Then:
“Why not tell me?”
Victor laughed.
“Because your father trained me never to hand Morettis leverage.”
“Antonio was not my biological—” Luca stopped.
He had not told Victor Nicholas claim yet.
Good.
Privacy.
Victor said:
“What?”
“Nothing.”
Important.
Then he added:
“Return to New York.”
Victor did.
Voluntarily.
No fugitive villain.
Good.
He wanted to present context.
At counsel office, he admitted he knew Nicholas was alive.
Of course.
“When did you last see him?”
“Four years ago.”
“After Antonio died?”
“Yes.”
“What did he want?”
“To close ghost-payroll matter.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because closing meant admitting Bellini accounts helped.”
There.
Reputation.
Then Victor looked at me.
“Thomas Dawson told me once that I was becoming Antonio.”
I stared.
“What did you say?”
“I told him he was a customs clerk.”
That sounded like wealthy man dismissing worker.
Victor looked ashamed.
“He said, ‘And yet here you are asking me for records.’”
I almost smiled.
Dad.
Then Victor said:
“He was right.”
Late.
Still.
Then one final thing.
The bank statements showed a recurring payment to:
H.V. CONSULTING.
Helena Voss.
She stared.
“That is mine.”
“How much?”
“Seventy thousand total.”
“For what?”
She looked at Isabella.
“Keeping Nicholas’s location secret.”
Silence.
Helena had taken money from Antonio too.
Why?
“To pay for my husband’s cancer treatment.”
There.
Not pure witness.
“Did Nicholas know?”
“No.”
“Did Antonio buy your silence?”
“Yes.”
Good.
Then:
“Did you still help Nicholas?”
“Yes.”
Both.
Human.
May you like
The story kept refusing clean sides.
Maybe that was the point.
