Chapter 9 - THE LAST LIE VANESSA TOLD

The drive from the hospital to the mansion lasted twenty-seven minutes.

I counted every one.

Luca sat beside Daniel in the front of the car, speaking quietly with Detective Alvarez. Isabella was on the other end of Mae's call, and I could hear her crying as she described the last few moments before Ethan disappeared.

"He asked for apple slices," she said. "I turned to get them from the tray. I thought he went into the hall to show Mrs. Carter his drawing. I was gone from the doorway for maybe thirty seconds."

"You didn't do anything wrong," Luca told her. "We're coming home. Stay with the officers."

The statement was simple, but I heard what it meant. He was not going to blame the mother who had spent four years protecting their child. He was not going to let fear turn them against each other again.

Mae confirmed that police had received the security footage. Officers were checking nearby roads and the estate perimeter. A maintenance van appeared on a camera near the west service entrance, but investigators had not yet established who drove it or whether Ethan was inside.

"Please find him," Isabella whispered.

"We will keep following the evidence," Mae said. "And we need everyone to share information as quickly as possible."

At the mansion, Mrs. Carter met us with tears in her eyes. She kept apologizing for leaving the garden room. Luca stopped her gently.

"Vanessa exploited the access she was given," he said. "That's her choice, not yours."

Isabella stood behind Mrs. Carter, shaking in an oversized cardigan. I hugged her without speaking. She held on so tightly that I could feel her heartbeat against mine.

In the study, Daniel replayed the corridor footage. Vanessa walked beside Ethan, wearing a courier jacket over dark trousers. A red scarf hid most of her hair. At one point Ethan stopped and tried to turn back. Vanessa leaned down and said something too softly for the camera to record. Then he walked with her again.

"She frightened him," I said. "Look at his shoulders."

Luca clenched his hands, then released them.

"Can you show the exterior camera?" he asked.

The next image showed Vanessa guiding Ethan into the maintenance van. She placed him on the passenger side, then drove toward the west gate. The van passed through just before the automatic barrier was locked.

"Peter opened it," Daniel said. "His access badge was used at the control panel."

Mae notified the investigators searching for the missing guard. Daniel provided the vehicle plate and everything he knew about Peter's accounts. Luca gave the police full access to the mansion's security files.

No one suggested handling it privately.

A quarter of an hour later, a phone rang on the study desk. The number was blocked, but Luca answered with Mae on the line and the call preserved under the investigators' guidance.

"Hello, darling," Vanessa said brightly. "I hope you aren't angry."

My skin crawled.

"Where's Ethan?" Luca asked.

"Safe. For now."

"Let me hear him."

"You will. First, we need to discuss how badly you've embarrassed me. You threw me out of my own engagement because some girl couldn't keep her hands off documents that didn't belong to her."

"You hit Olivia. I saw it."

"And now you've turned our wedding into a public humiliation."

"Vanessa, listen. Ethan is four years old. Whatever you're angry about is between adults."

A pause.

"Dominic said you'd say that. He wants the trust review stopped and the transfer authorization signed. He says you know which papers."

"That authorization is under investigation."

"Then you had better find a way to make the investigation disappear."

Luca looked at Mae's message on Daniel's screen. Keep talking if safe. Ask for proof of life.

"Put my son on," he said.

There was a rustle. Then a small voice whispered, "Dad?"

Luca gripped the desk. "Hi, Ethan. It's me."

"I want Mommy."

"I know. We're looking for you. Are you hurt?"

"No. The lady says I have to be quiet."

"You don't have to answer any questions that scare you. Just remember we love you."

"Can Olivia come?"

I closed my eyes. Luca looked toward me.

"She's here," he said. "She's helping."

Vanessa took the phone back. "You'll receive an address. Come without the police. Bring the papers."

She hung up.

In the silence afterward, Luca stared at the phone as though he could force it to ring again.

"She thinks I'm going to hand her a signed authorization," he said.

"Don't," Isabella pleaded.

"I won't."

The address arrived by text eight minutes later: an abandoned lakeside events property once operated by the Bellini Foundation. It was a sprawling glass building surrounded by neglected gardens and a low stone wall. A photograph accompanied the message, showing Ethan seated on a chair beneath a mural of white swans. Captain Fox rested in his lap.

Isabella knew the building. "They used it for winter fundraisers. There's a mural just like that in the east conservatory."

Mae dispatched the information to the response team and asked Luca not to travel to the site. She explained that armed intervention around a child hostage could become dangerous quickly and that investigators needed to decide how to approach.

Luca paced the length of the room.

"I can't sit here while she's with him."

"Then help us," Mae replied. "Tell us everything you know about that property. Entrances, maintenance routes, who has keys. You can be useful without making yourself another person to rescue."

He stopped pacing. He called up old building plans from company archives and sent them to her. Daniel provided the names of former property managers. Isabella identified a greenhouse wing that had been closed for repairs because the heating system failed every winter.

I studied the photograph of Ethan. The boy's socks were muddy, and one lace on his shoe hung untied. He looked straight at the camera, not smiling. Behind him, a pane of glass reflected a narrow row of yellow lights.

"Wait," I said. "That mural might not be in the east conservatory."

Everyone turned.

"Isabella said the east conservatory has swans, but this room has yellow lights behind him. The old family photographs in the foyer show a different room at that property. The west garden hall had lights like these, didn't it?"

Isabella stared at the screen. "You're right. The east room has chandeliers. The west hall has wall sconces."

Mae relayed the detail to the officers. It would not determine the plan on its own, but it narrowed their focus.

Then we waited.

I have never known a silence heavier than that one. Mrs. Carter brought tea and nobody drank it. Daniel checked his phone repeatedly. Isabella sat with Ethan's drawings spread across her lap. Luca stood at the fireplace, staring at the empty place where his son's crooked train had sat the evening before.

At last Mae called. She said officers had reached the property and made contact with the people inside. Dominic had attempted to leave through a service yard but had been detained. Vanessa remained in the west garden hall with Ethan. Trained negotiators were speaking with her.

"Can I talk to her?" Luca asked.

"If the negotiators decide it will help," Mae answered. "For now, let them work."

An hour passed before the next update. Vanessa had demanded television cameras, a lawyer, and written assurance that her father would not be charged. The negotiators refused to promise outcomes beyond their control. They kept the conversation focused on Ethan's safety.

Then Luca's phone rang again.

This time, Vanessa was crying.

"I didn't mean for it to go this far," she said. "Dominic told me the boy would be taken away quietly. He said you wouldn't have to know."

Luca's voice stayed level. "Let Ethan walk out. Then we can discuss everything else with your lawyer present."

"You'll hate me."

"Right now I need my son safe."

A long pause followed. In the background, a child asked for his mother.

"He's just a little boy," Vanessa whispered, as though she had only just understood it.

"Yes," Luca said. "He is."

The call ended.

Minutes later, Mae sent the message we had all been waiting for.

ETHAN IS SAFE WITH OFFICERS. NO REPORTED INJURIES.

Isabella made a sound I will never forget. Luca sat down so abruptly the chair struck the wall. I reached for the nearest solid thing and found Mrs. Carter's hand.

Ethan was taken to a hospital for an examination before his parents could bring him home. Isabella held him through the medical check. Luca stayed beside them, repeating that he wasn't going away. Ethan wanted Captain Fox, apple juice, and a promise that the woman in the red scarf would never come near him again.

"The adults are working to keep you safe," Isabella told him. "You don't have to fix this."

Vanessa and Dominic were arrested. Peter Alden was found later that night and taken into custody. No dramatic courtroom confession followed. Just investigators, records, attorneys, and a frightened child finally asleep between two parents who were learning how to trust each other.

I thought the worst was over.

But the next morning, Mae arrived at Luca's study carrying a copy of the foundation's financial authorization forms.

"Evelyn's records are authentic," she said. "They show Dominic diverted trust funds. But they also show something we need to discuss with your attorney."

She laid a page on the desk.

At the bottom was Luca Moretti's signature.

Not once.

Not twice.

On every major transfer.

May you like

Luca stared at the page, his face going white.

"Those are my signatures," he said.
