Chapter 2

The footsteps stopped.
Nobody moved.
Luca looked toward the ceiling.
Then at Vanessa.
“Who is upstairs?”
She swallowed.
“No one.”
Marco laughed once.
“Bad time for that answer.”
Luca turned toward the service hall.
“Security.”
Two men appeared almost immediately.
“Second floor. Check every room.”
Vanessa stepped in front of them.
“No.”
That word changed everything.
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“No?”
She looked trapped.
“I mean—there’s no need.”
“Then why are you blocking them?”
“I’m not.”
She moved aside.
Too slowly.
The security men disappeared up the staircase.
Luca watched her.
I watched him.
Clara kept one hand beneath my injured wrist.
The pain had become a deep pulse.
My swollen finger felt hot.
I tried not to think about it.
Luca noticed anyway.
“Claire.”
“I’m okay.”
“No.”
He looked toward the front hall.
“Where is Hayes?”
As if summoned, the door opened.
Dr. Hayes entered with a black medical bag.
Older.
Gray hair.
No-nonsense expression.
He saw my hand.
“Not a pantry door.”
Vanessa went rigid.
Dr. Hayes looked at Luca.
“What happened?”
“Door injury.”
“Intentional?”
Luca looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
The doctor’s expression changed slightly.
“Let me see.”
He sat beside me.
Cut the bandage carefully.
Touched the swollen finger.
I almost screamed.
He stopped.
“Possible fracture.”
My stomach dropped.
“Do I need a hospital?”
“Yes.”
Luca answered before he did.
Dr. Hayes looked at him.
“X-ray.”
I exhaled.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“This is getting absurd.”
Dr. Hayes turned.
“Broken fingers often are.”
“I meant the theater.”
Luca’s face went cold.
“Leave.”
She stared.
“What?”
“Go upstairs.”
“No.”
“I need to talk to Arthur.”
“Then call him from somewhere else.”
Her face flushed.
“This is my home too.”
“No.”
Again.
That word.
Cleaner this time.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Luca continued.
“You have a room here.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“You’re right.”
His voice remained calm.
“This house belongs to the Moretti estate.”
Vanessa looked wounded.
Then furious.
“You said we were building a life here.”
“We were.”
The past tense landed.
Hard.
She turned away.
Before she reached the doorway, one of the security men came downstairs.
Alone.
Luca looked up.
“Well?”
The man hesitated.
“We found someone.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Luca saw.
“Who?”
The guard looked at her.
“Mr. Arthur Vale.”
Vanessa’s father.
Of course.
Arthur Vale descended seconds later.
He looked exactly like the kind of man who made problems disappear with signatures.
Silver hair.
Dark suit.
Expensive tie.
No visible surprise.
He nodded at Luca.
“Good evening.”
Luca stared.
“You entered my house without telling me.”
Arthur looked at Vanessa.
“She asked me to come.”
“When?”
“After dinner began.”
“Why?”
“To discuss a legal matter.”
“The trust?”
Arthur’s expression shifted.
A small thing.
Enough.
“Yes.”
Luca held up the auction contract.
“You certified Vanessa could sell my mother’s jewelry.”
Arthur looked at it.
“I certified the Bellini trust’s claim.”
“That is not the same.”
“It is legally related.”
“What trust?”
Arthur sighed.
“Luca.”
“No.”
Luca stepped closer.
“You do not get to use my first name to make this sound friendly.”
Arthur’s face cooled.
“The Lucia Bellini Restoration Trust predates her marriage.”
“That is impossible.”
“No.”
“My mother married my father thirty-six years ago.”
“Yes.”
“She was twenty-four.”
“Twenty-three.”
Luca froze.
Arthur continued.
“The trust was drafted when she was nineteen.”
“For what?”
“Bellini family assets.”
“Why does it include her jewelry?”
“It includes personal property acquired from Bellini funds.”
Luca stared.
“That bracelet was my grandmother’s.”
“Bellini grandmother.”
“My mother left it to me.”
“The trust contains a reversion clause.”
Marco stepped closer.
“What clause?”
Arthur looked at him.
“Upon Lucia’s death, any untransferred Bellini heirloom reverts to the eldest surviving Bellini female beneficiary.”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“My mother had no surviving sisters.”
Arthur said nothing.
That silence answered too much.
Luca looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.”
She turned.
“I knew there was a claim.”
“You knew Elena Bellini was alive.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
I felt the room shift.
Another dead woman who was not dead.
Another family history edited around Luca.
He laughed once.
“Of course.”
Arthur looked at me.
His eyes dropped to my hand.
Then back to Luca.
“This is not the time.”
Luca’s expression hardened.
“This became the time when your daughter closed a door on Claire’s hand over a contract you prepared.”
Arthur turned sharply.
“Vanessa.”
She looked at him.
“What did you do?”
“I panicked.”
“Did you injure her?”
“It was an accident.”
I stared at her.
She saw.
Arthur did too.
He closed his eyes briefly.
“Vanessa.”
“I didn’t mean to break anything.”
Dr. Hayes looked up.
“We don’t know if it’s broken yet.”
Arthur’s face tightened.
Luca walked toward the sideboard.
Poured himself water.
Did not drink it.
“What is Elena’s claim?”
Arthur exhaled.
“She claims Lucia unlawfully transferred Bellini assets into the Moretti estate.”
“Which assets?”
“Jewelry. Two paintings. A townhouse in Manhattan. Certain shares.”
“What shares?”
Arthur hesitated.
Luca turned.
“What shares?”
“Moretti Maritime.”
Marco frowned.
“That company doesn’t exist.”
“Not currently.”
Luca’s face changed.
“What are you saying?”
“Bellini capital funded its original formation.”
“My grandfather founded Moretti Maritime.”
“With Bellini money.”
Silence.
Arthur continued.
“Lucia’s trust retained conversion rights.”
“To what?”
“Equity.”
“How much?”
Arthur looked directly at Luca.
“Twenty-eight percent.”
Luca laughed.
“No.”
“It’s documented.”
“Where?”
“In the trust.”
“Show me.”
Arthur glanced at Vanessa.
“No.”
That was strange.
Luca saw it.
“Why not?”
“Because the original trust instrument is missing.”
Silence.
Vanessa whispered:
“That’s why the jewelry matters.”
Luca looked at her.
“What?”
She swallowed.
“The collection contains the access codes.”
I stared.
Luca’s face hardened.
“What access codes?”
Arthur looked angry now.
“Vanessa.”
But she was already speaking.
“Lucia hid documents.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“You were auctioning the jewelry without knowing what it opened?”
“No.”
Her voice shook.
“The broker was supposed to identify which pieces had modified settings.”
Luca picked up the inventory sheet.
“Modified?”
Vanessa pointed.
“The bracelet clasp.”
He stared.
“What about it?”
“There’s engraving inside.”
“Numbers?”
“Yes.”
“Which numbers?”
“I don’t know. Kessler saw something under magnification.”
Marco muttered, “Jesus.”
Luca looked at me.
“You saw the bracelet.”
“Yes.”
“Did you see the clasp?”
“Only briefly.”
“Anything unusual?”
I thought.
Diamond bracelet.
Old platinum.
Heavy.
Vanessa’s hand covering it.
Kessler using a loupe.
Then I remembered.
“A notch.”
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“Where?”
“Inside the clasp. Tiny.”
Arthur’s face changed.
I saw it.
So did Luca.
“What?”
Arthur said nothing.
Luca stepped closer.
“What does the notch mean?”
Arthur’s jaw tightened.
“Nothing.”
I almost laughed.
No one believed that word anymore.
Luca held out his hand.
“Vanessa.”
She looked at him.
“The bracelet.”
“It’s not here.”
“You said your apartment.”
“Yes.”
“Which one?”
Silence.
He stared.
“Which apartment?”
Vanessa’s face went white.
Arthur looked at her.
“Tell him.”
She swallowed.
“The Bellini apartment.”
Luca’s expression hardened.
“I don’t know what that is.”
“A townhouse.”
“Where?”
“East Seventy-Third.”
Arthur looked furious.
Luca looked at him.
“The trust townhouse?”
“Yes.”
“Which you said is disputed.”
“Yes.”
“And Vanessa has access.”
“Yes.”
Luca’s voice turned icy.
“Why?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because I’m a Bellini beneficiary.”
Silence.
Luca stared.
“What?”
She looked down.
“My mother was Elena’s daughter.”
I stopped breathing.
Arthur closed his eyes.
Marco swore.
Luca said nothing.
Vanessa continued, words coming faster now.
“My mother, Isabelle Vale, was Elena Bellini’s only child.”
Luca’s face emptied.
“So you are Elena’s granddaughter.”
“Yes.”
“And you knew my mother’s jewelry might legally pass to you.”
“Yes.”
“And you got engaged to me.”
Her face twisted.
“That had nothing to do with this.”
“Didn’t it?”
“No.”
“You had access to the vault.”
“Because you trusted me.”
“I did.”
That past tense again.
Vanessa looked as if it physically hurt.
Arthur stepped in.
“This is exactly why we wanted to handle the trust quietly.”
Luca turned.
“Quietly?”
“You don’t want Bellini litigation attached to your companies.”
“You mean you didn’t want me reading the trust.”
Arthur’s face tightened.
Luca continued.
“You certified an auction while the ownership was disputed.”
“To preserve value.”
“That is nonsense.”
Arthur said nothing.
Dr. Hayes finished wrapping my hand.
“Hospital.”
Luca nodded.
I shook my head.
“Not yet.”
He looked at me.
“Claire.”
“I want to hear this.”
Vanessa laughed.
“This has nothing to do with you.”
Arthur looked at me.
Then at my face.
Then at my name tag still pinned to my damaged uniform.
CLAIRE MASON.
His expression changed.
Small.
But real.
I saw it.
Luca did too.
“What?”
Arthur said nothing.
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“You know her.”
“No.”
“You reacted to her name.”
“I did not.”
I stared at him.
He looked away.
My stomach tightened.
“Mr. Vale.”
He turned back.
“Have we met?”
“No.”
“Do you know my family?”
“No.”
“Claire,” Luca said softly.
I looked at him.
He had noticed the same thing.
Arthur picked up his briefcase.
“This conversation is over.”
Luca stepped in front of him.
“No.”
Arthur’s jaw tightened.
“Move.”
“Why did you react to Claire’s name?”
“I didn’t.”
“Then answer her.”
Arthur stared at me.
For a long time.
Then said:
“Your mother’s maiden name was Mason?”
My breath caught.
“No.”
Luca looked at me.
“What was it?”
I swallowed.
“Bell.”
Arthur went completely still.
Vanessa turned.
“What?”
I felt cold.
“My mother was Nora Bell.”
Arthur whispered:
“Nora.”
The name came out like a ghost.
Luca stared at him.
“You knew her.”
Arthur did not answer.
I stepped closer.
“How?”
He looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at the auction contract.
His face had lost all color.
“Claire.”
“What?”
“Your mother was not Nora Bell.”
My chest tightened.
“What are you talking about?”
Arthur’s voice dropped.
“She changed her name.”
“To what?”
He stared at me.
“From Bellini.”
Silence.
Luca’s face changed.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Arthur continued.
“Nora Bell was born Nora Bellini.”
May you like
And suddenly, the auction contract in Luca’s hand was not only about Vanessa’s family.
It was about mine.
