Chapter 7

Fifteen years after the wedding cake collapse, a business-ethics and event-safety program asked to teach the case.

The first proposed title:

THE PAID FIANCÉE AND THE HIDDEN CRASH.

Nora declined.

Final title:

CONFLICT DISCLOSURE, FAMILY SETTLEMENTS, AND TEMPORARY EVENT STRUCTURE SAFETY.

Boring.

Excellent.

At the seminar, a student asked:

“Was Camille paid to date Luca?”

“No.”

Nora answered.

“The payments settled claims after Sofia Bellini’s death and included a five-year no-contact clause.”

Good.

Then:

“Did she intentionally meet Luca after it expired?”

“Yes.”

Good.

Specific.

Then student:

“Was that fraud?”

“No.”

Not by itself.

Good.

Then:

“Did she hide material history from him?”

“Yes.”

Good.

Relationship ethics.

Not criminal law.

Then event-safety professor asked:

“Did Camille sabotage the cake?”

“No.”

Replacement frame lacked required brace after unapproved cosmetic change.

Good.

Then:

“Did she contribute to Nora’s injury?”

“Yes.”

She ordered unapproved replacement and told Nora to keep holding after area was clear.

Good.

Specific.

Then family-law professor discussed settlements.

Are confidentiality clauses always wrong?

No.

Can they become coercive?

Yes.

Especially when:

power imbalance;

grief;

financial pressure;

unrelated no-contact terms.

Good.

Then Luca spoke.

“I wanted the agreement to prove my father was cruel.”

Pause.

“It proved he was controlling.”

Then:

“Cruel is a larger judgment.”

Good.

Then Daniel joined by recorded statement.

He said:

“I drove drunk.”

No euphemism.

Good.

Then:

“Antonio hiding Luca’s memory did not cause the crash.”

Good.

Different responsibility.

Then a student asked whether Luca should forgive Daniel.

Not a course question.

Good.

Then Nora spoke about holding the cake.

“I thought if I let go, someone would be hurt.”

Then:

“After the children moved, I should have stepped away.”

Good.

Then labor professor:

“Why didn’t you?”

“Camille told me not to.”

Then:

“And I still worked and lived in the household.”

There.

Power.

Then class exercise.

A decorative tower shifts.

People cleared.

What next?

Let it fall.

Good.

Protect perimeter.

Call engineer.

Do not sacrifice worker to object.

Good.

Then another exercise.

A partner has undisclosed prior financial settlement with family.

What next?

Disclosure.

Independent advice.

Recusal if business decision affected.

Good.

Then seminar organizer asked Nora to pose beside a cake tower.

“No.”

Good.

No trauma reenactment.

Then asked Camille? Not present.

Good.

Then one student said:

“Isn’t the interesting part that she loved him anyway?”

Nora answered:

“The interesting part is that love did not erase the information asymmetry.”

Good.

Then seminar ended.

That was the seventh correction.

The seminar handout distinguished settlement consideration, hush money, bribery, damages, confidentiality, and non-contact provisions. Students initially blended them. By the end, they understood why labels matter.

A student asked whether Camille’s grief mitigated her concealment. It explained motive. It did not make five years of nondisclosure fair to Luca.

The university later corrected a slide that called the $175,000 a bribe. The record showed settlement consideration, not payment for future romance.
