Chapter 10

Twenty-five years after an eight-foot marble angel fell across Emma Walsh’s legs, she stood beneath a different sculpture.

Smaller.

Bronze.

Bolted.

Safe.

She looked up.

Luca stood beside her.

Sixty-four now.

Gray at the temples.

blue eyes still sharp.

short beard silvered.

tattooed hands older.

They were at a museum reception.

Not their house.

No engagement.

No hidden safe.

The plaque read:

DO NOT TOUCH.

Emma smiled.

Luca:

“What?”

“Good advice.”

He laughed.

Then family joined them.

A niece.

her husband.

two children.

One child asked:

“Is this the statue that fell on you?”

“No.”

Good.

Then:

“Where is that one?”

“Sculpture hall at the estate.”

“Why didn’t you throw it away?”

Emma:

“Because Vanessa was the problem, not the angel.”

Luca:

“And maintenance.”

Good.

Then:

“Was there treasure behind it?”

“No.”

The child looked disappointed.

“Contracts.”

Worse.

Then:

“Songs?”

“Yes.”

That helped.

Then:

“Did Grandma Lucia write famous songs?”

“Some famous enough.”

Then:

“Why were they in a safe?”

Original contracts.

split sheets.

demo tapes.

Private papers.

Then:

“Did Vanessa steal them?”

“No.”

Good.

Then Emma explained:

“Her company kept collecting and deducting some licensing money after its authority ended.”

The child frowned.

“Boring.”

“Yes.”

Perfect.

Then:

“Why hide it?”

Luca:

“Because boring paperwork can still stop a very expensive deal.”

Good.

Then:

“Did you marry Emma because she found it?”

“No.”

Immediate.

Then:

“She left my employment, built her own career, told me no several times, and eventually decided I was acceptable.”

Emma:

“Barely.”

Good.

Then the child lost interest.

Dessert.

Perfect.

Later, a string quartet played.

One song:

“Paper Moonlight.”

Luca heard first.

He looked at Emma.

She smiled.

No tears.

Just recognition.

Then:

“Your mother.”

“Yes.”

The quartet had licensed it properly.

Probably.

Emma laughed at herself.

Then:

“Stop.”

Good.

After reception, they went home.

Not the old estate full-time.

A smaller city house.

No monumental sculptures.

One heavy bookcase anchored to wall.

Good.

Then Luca asked:

“You know what I remember?”

“The safe?”

“No.”

“Vanessa?”

“No.”

“My legs?”

“Yes.”

Emma looked down.

No visible scars under trousers.

“Why?”

“Because you said you could hold it.”

Silence.

Then:

“You thought being crushed was better than damaging the floor.”

That was true.

Then:

“I’m sorry the house made that feel possible.”

Good.

Not:

I saved you.

Then Emma asked:

“What do you remember?”

Luca thought.

“The red folder.”

Then:

“Why?”

“Because one piece of paper saying authority ended mattered more than a hundred statements pretending it didn’t.”

Good.

Then:

“Do you regret keeping my mother’s songs private for a while?”

“No.”

“Do you regret making L. Mare public later?”

“No.”

Good.

Choices can change with time.

Then:

“Do you think she would approve?”

Emma:

“I don’t know.”

Still.

Good.

No dead-person certainty.

Then they opened wine.

Ordinary.

No song playing.

Then Luca’s phone buzzed.

Annual L. Mare report.

He looked.

Then forwarded to professional rights manager.

No reading.

Emma:

“Growth.”

“Retirement.”

Good.

Then her own consultancy sent a note.

She no longer ran daily operations.

CLIENT RIGHTS HANDOFF — EXPIRATION CONFLICT.

Emma closed it.

Her partners could handle it.

Good.

Systems outlive founders.

Then next morning, a radio in the kitchen played “Blue Hotel Window.”

Emma was making coffee.

Luca walked in.

Neither stopped.

The song belonged to breakfast now.

Good.

Then he opened cabinet.

A small ceramic angel sat inside.

Gift from niece.

Emma stared.

Luca:

“I did not buy it.”

She laughed.

Then placed it on a lower shelf.

Stable.

No wall safe.

No hidden door.

No symbolism needed.

Twenty-five years earlier, Vanessa had tried to keep a steel panel invisible long enough for one deal and one wedding to close.

She had believed time could convert expired authority into practical ownership.

It could not.

Bellini Media repaid what it owed.

fixed systems.

survived.

Luca learned that delegating did not mean disappearing.

Emma learned that stopping work was not failure.

Lucia’s songs kept moving through rooms she would never see.

And the marble angel?

It stood where professionals had anchored it.

That was enough.

Not a house without heavy things.

A life where no one expected Emma to hold them up with her body.

Before bed, Emma checked that the ceramic angel sat flat on its shelf. Luca watched. “Trauma?” he asked. “Gravity,” she said. Good.

The next day, the kitchen radio played no Lucia songs at all. Emma still had breakfast. Ordinary life did not need a soundtrack.
