Chapter 10

Twenty-five years after three glasses of wine spilled across a white engagement table, I carried a tray into our dining room.
Not silver.
Wood.
Two glasses.
Red wine.
white wine.
No blue.
Luca looked up.
Sixty-four now.
Hair mostly gray at the sides.
still spiky on top because vanity apparently survives everything.
short beard silver.
blue eyes still sharp.
He wore no three-piece suit.
Sweater.
I set the tray down.
Steady.
No shaking hands.
No blood.
No torn uniform.
Then he looked at the ceiling.
Our small pendant light.
“Still there.”
“Unfortunately.”
“You chose it.”
“I know.”
Good.
Then our niece Sofia arrived with her son.
Family dinner.
Pasta.
salad.
bread.
No sea bass.
No engagement toast.
Then the boy asked:
“Is this the house with the chandelier?”
“No.”
“Where is it?”
“Gone.”
“Why?”
I looked at Luca.
He answered:
“Because houses change.”
Good.
Then:
“Did it almost kill you?”
“No.”
“Mom said—”
“Mom was wrong.”
Then I explained:
“The person most likely meant to be under it was an engineer named Daniel.”
“Why?”
“Because he found problems someone wanted hidden.”
The boy frowned.
Then:
“Did you save him?”
“No.”
Again.
“I saw something. I told people. Other people did their jobs.”
Then:
“But the wine fell.”
“Yes.”
“Did that help?”
“Maybe.”
Good.
Not destiny.
Then:
“Was Vanessa evil?”
Luca answered:
“No.”
Then:
“She did something dangerous and criminal.”
The boy considered.
“Why?”
“She was afraid her family company would fail.”
Then:
“Did it fail?”
“No.”
He looked confused.
Exactly.
Then dessert.
No one talked about chandeliers anymore.
Good.
After they left, Luca and I cleaned.
He dried dishes badly.
Marriage.
Then:
“You know what I remember?”
“The blue wine?”
“No.”
“The crash?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“And you.”
I looked at him.
“What about me?”
“You kept trying to stand.”
Silence.
Then:
“You were bleeding and still trying to finish service.”
I looked down.
My thigh scars almost invisible.
Then:
“I thought I had to.”
“I know.”
He swallowed.
Then:
“I wish the house had taught you that you didn’t.”
Better.
Not rescue.
Then I asked:
“What do you remember about Vanessa?”
He thought.
“That she believed delay was disaster.”
Interesting.
Then:
“And Daniel?”
“He said ‘punishment and repair are different questions.’”
Good.
Then:
“What about yourself?”
Longer pause.
“That I thought deadlines were neutral.”
They weren’t.
Incentives are instructions even when no one says them aloud.
Then Moretti Hospitality.
Still operating.
Safety committee independent.
Stop-work data reviewed.
Bellini Group sometimes vendor, sometimes competitor.
No permanent feud.
Then my old consultancy.
Elena ran it.
I advised rarely.
She sent me quarterly report only if I asked.
I usually didn’t.
Good.
Then Daniel’s technical paper remained standard reading in some firms.
No celebrity.
Useful.
Then the original load-cell data.
Archived by insurer under retention.
Physical recorder destroyed.
Utility knife gone.
Tray gone.
Uniform gone.
No museum.
Good.
Then Vanessa.
Dead.
No final secret.
Victor dead.
Daniel dead.
Helena retired.
No new revelation waiting.
Good.
The story had enough.
Then the pendant above us made a small metallic click.
I looked up.
For one second, twenty-five years disappeared.
My shoulders tightened.
Then Luca looked too.
The light swayed slightly.
Air vent.
That was all.
I laughed.
He smiled.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
He believed me.
Good.
Then I stood on a chair? Unsafe. No. Luca gets proper step stool. We don't need inspect.
We left it alone.
Then I poured red wine.
Steady hand.
Luca poured white.
No blue.
He raised his glass.
“To gravity.”
I stared.
“Terrible.”
“To engineering?”
“Worse.”
Then:
“To boring ceilings.”
I smiled.
“Fine.”
We touched glasses.
One small clink.
Nothing moved overhead.
No hidden electrician.
No cut cable.
No one waiting for a cue.
Just a light doing exactly what it had been designed to do.
That was the ending I wanted.
Not a chandelier that never swayed.
Not a life without risk.
A room where uncertainty did not have to be hidden, bad news could arrive early, and anyone who saw danger was allowed to say stop before somebody bled.
That was enough.
Before bed, I looked once more at the pendant light.
Still.
Ordinary.
Then turned it off.
Darkness came because I chose the switch.
Nothing else.
The final chapter needed only an ordinary light and a harmless click to show that Nora could notice risk without surrendering the room to fear.
