The Building Beneath Her Feet

Chapter 11 - The Building Beneath Her Feet

Samuel worked through the night.

At dawn, he found the truth.

The building housing Rose’s Table had been purchased twelve years earlier by a small holding company Thomas created for retirement investments.

After Thomas became ill, control of that company shifted temporarily to Michael under a power of attorney.

Michael had later granted Vanessa financial authority over several business entities.

The arrangement was supposed to expire when Thomas died.

It had not.

Vanessa had renewed filings.

Quietly.

Legally enough to create a mess.

Not legally enough to guarantee she would win.

“She can’t just take the building,” Michael said.

Samuel looked at him.

“She can create enough confusion to make a bank nervous.”

Eleanor stood in the kitchen, rolling biscuit dough.

Michael stared at her.

“Mom, stop.”

“Stop what?”

“Cooking.”

“People will be here in forty minutes.”

“Your restaurant could be locked tomorrow.”

“Then I’ll feed them today.”

He slammed his hand on the counter.

“How are you this calm?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“I’m not calm.”

Her voice broke.

“I am terrified.”

Michael’s anger vanished.

Eleanor wiped her hands on her apron.

“I wake up every morning wondering which thing you and your wife borrowed against while I was caring for your father.”

“Mom—”

“I wonder whether the roof over my head belongs to me. I wonder whether the floor beneath my feet belongs to me. I wonder whether the son I raised ever looked at my signature and thought, for one second, that perhaps he should ask me.”

Michael’s face crumpled.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

It was the first time she had said that.

Not I forgive you.

Only I know.

Sometimes that was as far as love could safely go.

At noon, Michael made a decision.

He called the bank and disclosed every questionable guarantee.

He called the board of Rose Development and resigned as chief executive until an independent review could be completed.

Then he turned over his company access.

By sunset, his photograph was on every local news page.

ROSE DEVELOPMENT CEO STEPS ASIDE AMID FINANCIAL REVIEW.

Vanessa responded within an hour.

Her attorney released a statement accusing Michael of blaming his wife for his own reckless decisions.

Then a second statement appeared.

This one targeted Eleanor.

It claimed she had pressured Michael for money for years.

It claimed Thomas had hidden assets from his son.

It claimed the cash in the burlap sack might itself have been stolen company money.

Eleanor read the article once.

Then she put down her phone.

Samuel looked worried.

“What are you thinking?”

“That Thomas knew this might happen.”

“How?”

Eleanor looked toward the old sack beneath the counter.

“The cash.”

She walked over and lifted it.

At the bottom, stitched into the inner lining, was something she had never noticed.

A small plastic pouch.

Inside was a bank receipt.

And a note in Thomas’s handwriting.

Every dollar accounted for.

For once, Thomas had left them more than a warning.

He had left a trail.
