The Clip That Went Viral

Chapter 06 - The Clip That Went Viral

By sunrise, the clip had passed two million views.

People who had never met me decided what kind of woman I was.

Gold digger.

Bitter ex-wife.

Failed mother.

Professional victim.

Someone found an old photograph from the first Mercer hotel opening. Ethan and I stood side by side, both twenty-four, both exhausted, both smiling as if the future belonged to us.

A popular gossip page placed it beside the lobby clip.

SHE HELPED BUILD HIS EMPIRE—NOW SHE WANTS ANOTHER PAYDAY.

The headline almost sounded sympathetic.

The comments were not.

At seven fifteen, my supervisor called.

“Claire, I believe you,” Marisol said. “But the clinic’s largest donor is the Mercer Family Foundation.”

I closed my eyes.

“How long am I suspended?”

“I didn’t use that word.”

“How long?”

“Until the board meets.”

The clinic served families who had nowhere else to go. I had worked there for four years, managing patient assistance applications and negotiating bills that could destroy a household.

Vanessa knew that.

She had not merely attacked my reputation.

She had placed my job beneath Ethan’s feet and dared him to move.

He was in the hospital cafeteria when I found him.

His untouched coffee had gone cold.

“I’ve been suspended.”

He stood immediately.

“I’ll call the foundation.”

“No.”

“Claire—”

“If you pressure my employer, the internet will say I proved them right.”

“I can correct the statement.”

“You should have corrected it before it was released.”

“I didn’t know.”

“That sentence is doing a lot of work for you.”

He looked down.

I hated that part of me still recognized his shame. I hated that I knew the small muscle that moved in his jaw when he was frightened.

“I have requested the complete security footage,” he said. “The hotel says there was a technical delay.”

“Your hotel?”

“Not anymore, apparently.”

Emma needed another transfusion that morning.

Ethan sat outside while I stayed with her.

He did not ask to enter.

That mattered more than I wanted it to.

Around noon, Rosa arrived carrying a paper bag containing Emma’s backpack and jacket.

“I found these in the security office,” she said.

“Why were they there?”

“They searched her belongings.”

Ethan stood.

“On whose authority?”

“Vanessa’s.”

Rosa removed Emma’s phone from the backpack.

“The screen is cracked, but it still works.”

Emma unlocked it.

The sent emails were there.

So were the threatening messages Vanessa had shown Ethan.

But they had not been sent by Emma.

They were drafts.

Someone had logged into her account, created them, taken screenshots and left the drafts behind.

Ethan examined the login history.

One unfamiliar device appeared repeatedly.

A laptop registered to Mercer Hospitality’s executive network.

“This doesn’t prove Vanessa used it,” I said.

“No.”

“But someone inside your company did.”

“Yes.”

Emma looked at him.

“Are you going to protect the company?”

“No.”

“Your mother?”

“No.”

“Vanessa?”

Ethan held her gaze.

“No.”

Emma handed him the phone.

“Then prove it.”

That afternoon, Ethan called an emergency meeting with the company’s general counsel and head of information security.

He demanded the family server logs.

He demanded every communication involving my name or Emma’s.

Two hours later, the attorney returned his call.

The server history for Emma’s email address had been erased the night before.

Only one administrator had logged in during that period.

Margaret Mercer.

Ethan stared at the report.

Then another message arrived.

It was from his mother.

Do not destroy everything your father built over a woman who already left you once.

Ethan read it aloud.

I felt anger rise in my chest.

But Emma was staring at a different part of the screen.

May you like

A message notification had appeared beneath Margaret’s.

VANESSA: Tell Claire that if she wants the full lobby footage released, she knows the price.
