The Mastermind Revealed

Chapter 08 - The Mastermind Revealed

The loud, commanding echo of my voice shattered the quiet hum of the warehouse.

Chloe let out a piercing shriek, dropping the duffel bag onto the concrete floor and backing away into the shadows.

Julian didn't flinch. He slowly raised his head, looking up at the high catwalk where I stood in the dim light. The sickening smile on his face didn't fade; if anything, it widened into a terrifying mask of arrogance.

“Arthur Harrington,” Julian purred, his voice carrying effortlessly through the cavernous space. “I wondered how long it would take you to follow the breadcrumbs. You always were quick on your feet—especially when protecting that precious little boy of yours.”

“Step away from the drive, Julian!” I shouted, keeping my weapon locked onto his chest. “The warehouse is surrounded by federal officers! You have nowhere to run!”

Julian chuckled, a low, rasping sound. “Oh, Arthur. Still playing the brave hero. You think Vance’s men are outside? Check your phone, my boy. You’ll find the cellular towers within a half-mile radius are completely jammed.”

I didn't look at my phone—I knew better than to break eye contact with a cornered snake.

“You set Eleanor up,” I realized out loud, the pieces of the puzzle snapping into place. “You fed her the idea to push Leo. You knew if she made a desperate, violent move, she would draw all the police attention to herself, leaving the company’s internal security completely exposed for you to sweep in and steal the master drive.”

“Eleanor was an ambitious, greedy idiot,” Julian spat with cold disdain. “She thought she was going to retire on a beach with fifty million. She didn't realize I needed all four hundred million from the Harrington trust to fund my international syndicate. She was merely a hammer, Arthur. And I was the arm swinging it.”

“And what about my son?!” I roared, my knuckle pressing against the trigger. “You told her to kill a five-month-old baby?!”

“A child is an emotional anchor, Arthur!” Julian yelled back, his composure finally snapping into raw, unhinged fury. “Your father was weak because of you! You are weak because of that brat! To build an empire, you eliminate attachments! If that baby died yesterday, Richard would have had a stroke, you would have been ruined by grief, and this entire company would have fallen into my lap without a single shot fired!”

“You’re a monster,” I whispered.

“I am an architect of reality!” Julian screamed. He suddenly raised his left hand, holding a small black remote control.

Before I could pull the trigger, two heavy steel shipping doors at the rear of the warehouse burst open with a deafening crash. A massive diesel flatbed truck backed into the warehouse at high speed, smashing directly into the metal scaffolding holding up the catwalk beneath my feet.
