The Letter With a Missing Page

Chapter 08 - The Letter With a Missing Page

The envelope contained three pages.

The first was addressed to me.

The second was addressed to Daniel.

The third had been torn away.

My mother’s handwriting began neatly but became weaker near the bottom.

Emily,

You spent your whole life believing I stayed at the Bellmore Grand because I had nowhere else to go. The truth is that I stayed because leaving would have allowed people with money to rewrite what happened there.

She explained the trust, the ownership shares and the evidence hidden inside Room 614.

Then she wrote about Daniel.

He is not responsible for the family that raised him. But he will be responsible for the family he chooses to protect when the truth becomes uncomfortable.

I read that sentence twice.

Daniel stood across the room, unable to meet my eyes.

His page was shorter.

Daniel,

Margaret will tell you that loyalty means silence. It does not. Silence only protects the person who is already powerful.

If you love my daughter, do not ask her to become smaller so you can remain comfortable.

The letter ended abruptly.

The missing third page had been removed along the fold.

Henry examined the torn edge.

“Margaret probably took it after opening the envelope.”

“What was on it?” I asked.

Daniel shook his head. “I never read any of this.”

“Because hiding it was easier.”

He accepted the words without defending himself.

Sarah entered with news that the wedding video had appeared online. A guest had posted Henry walking down the aisle with the deed.

Within an hour, millions of people had watched it.

Margaret’s public relations team issued a statement claiming I had staged the interruption to seize control of the hotel.

They described my mother as a “disgruntled former employee.”

I wanted to throw the phone across the room.

Instead, I read every word.

Then I noticed a phrase near the end.

Nora Carter was terminated following documented financial misconduct.

“My mother was never fired,” I said.

Rosa, standing near the door, looked away.

“Rosa?”

“She was,” Rosa admitted. “For two days.”

Margaret had accused Mom of stealing money after the fire. The charges were dropped when Franklin’s attorney intervened.

But the termination letter remained in her personnel file.

It gave Margaret a story she could use whenever the ownership dispute surfaced.

Henry looked through the envelope again.

A tiny strip of paper had become trapped beneath the inner seam.

He removed it with tweezers.

Only one sentence remained from the missing page.

The money was never stolen. It was transferred into an account opened under Daniel’s name.

Daniel stared at the paper.

“I was ten years old.”

Henry’s expression hardened.

“Which means someone used a child to hide what really happened.”
