The Hearing That Broke the Family

Chapter 14 - The Hearing That Broke the Family

The courthouse was packed.

Hale Meridian employees filled the rear benches. Some had worked for Arthur for thirty years. Others had seen only the headlines describing an unstable founder, a family dispute, and twenty-seven million dollars missing from their pensions.

Grant arrived through the front entrance.

He wore a charcoal suit and a dark blue tie—the colors Arthur had once told him made investors feel safe.

Claire entered separately with Sadie and Ethan.

Reporters shouted questions.

“Mrs. Bennett, did your father steal employee retirement money?”

“Is your daughter facing corporate espionage charges?”

“Was your son placed in treatment because he threatened his father?”

Claire kept walking.

Inside, Grant’s attorneys presented login records showing Arthur’s credentials had authorized every pension transfer.

Dr. Lowell testified that Arthur displayed paranoia, impulsiveness, and memory problems.

Arthur’s attorney played Ethan’s recording.

Grant’s lawyers argued it had been obtained illegally and could have been altered.

The judge refused to admit it until experts verified the file.

Then Grant called Claire as a witness.

She walked to the stand with trembling hands.

His attorney approached gently.

“Mrs. Bennett, did your father often make major family decisions without consulting anyone?”

“Yes.”

“Did he hide business problems from your mother?”

“Yes.”

“Did he lie about the circumstances of Samuel Brooks’s death?”

Claire looked at Arthur.

“Yes.”

Grant’s attorney turned toward the jury box, though there was no jury.

“Did you sign a petition expressing concern about your father’s mental condition?”

“Yes.”

Arthur heard whispers behind him.

The attorney placed the transfer documents before Claire.

“Is this your electronic signature?”

“Yes.”

“Did Arthur Hale ask you to approve these transfers?”

“No.”

Grant’s expression shifted.

The attorney paused.

“Who asked you?”

Claire looked directly at her husband.

“Grant did.”

The courtroom erupted.

The judge called for order.

Claire continued before anyone could stop her.

“He brought documents late at night. He told me they were routine. When I asked questions, he threatened to remove me from the family trust.”

Grant stood.

“She’s confused.”

Claire rolled up her sleeve, exposing the fading bruises.

“He controlled my phone, my accounts, and my children. He had Ethan committed under a false name. He forced Sadie to record a message.”

Grant’s lawyer demanded a recess.

The judge denied it.

Claire faced Arthur.

“My father failed me in many ways,” she said. “But he did not steal that money.”

Grant left the courtroom before she finished testifying.

Marcus followed him into the hall, but Grant’s car was already moving.

Ten minutes later, Hale Meridian’s head of technology called Sadie.

Someone inside headquarters had initiated a complete server deletion.

If the process finished, years of financial records would disappear.

Arthur turned toward the judge.

“Grant isn’t running from the hearing.”

He looked at Claire.

“He’s destroying the company.”
