Jeffries Threatens 'Serious Response' After Two Democrats Help GOP Pass Procedural Vote on Anti-Socialism Measure

WASHINGTON — House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries issued a stern warning of disciplinary action after two centrist House Democrats voted with Republicans on a key procedural measure, enabling the GOP to advance a resolution condemning socialism and the Democratic Socialists of America.
The rare procedural rebellion by Reps. Jared Golden (D-ME) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA) rescued a Republican-sponsored rule from failing on the House floor. In doing so, the duo allowed the GOP to bring to the floor a package of politically fraught measures designed to divide Democrats ahead of upcoming elections.
A "Significant Breach of Trust"
In a joint statement issued alongside Democratic Whip Katherine Clark and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, Jeffries condemned the unexpected defection as a betrayal of caucus unity.
“The decision by two of our colleagues to blindside the entire House Democratic Caucus and join with the Republican majority to pass a procedural rule on the brink of failing represents a significant breach of trust,” the leadership team stated. “It is an action that necessitates a serious response, and we have asked the Committee on Caucus Rules to take this up in short order.”

Procedural rules in the House are typically strict party-line votes, as passing a rule allows the majority party to set the terms of debate and bring bills to the floor. By voting with the GOP, Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez provided the necessary margins to pass the rule 210–208, effectively saving House Republicans from a high-profile legislative setback.
The Legislative "Trap"
The underlying resolution under debate strictly condemns socialism "in all its forms." However, Democratic leadership accused Republicans of inserting broader political "poison pills" into the package—such as backing provisions of the SAVE America Act, a controversial voting bill aimed at restricting mail-in balloting.
Democratic strategists argued the GOP's goal was to force a messaging trap: compelling moderate Democrats to either vote against the resolution and face accusations of being "soft on socialism," or vote for it and endorse restrictive voting policies favored by former President Donald Trump and House Republicans.
Tensions Flare Within the Caucus
The defection has reignited internal friction within the House Democratic Caucus, exposing ideological rifts between the party's center-right and progressive flanks. Several senior Democrats expressed visible frustration toward the two centrist lawmakers on Capitol Hill following the vote.

While Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez have frequently emphasized their independent records in swing and conservative-leaning districts, Democratic leadership underscored that crossing party lines on a procedural rule—without prior notice—crosses a line that threatens party discipline.
The Committee on Caucus Rules is expected to meet shortly to review potential consequences for the two members, which could range from formal reprimands to loss of committee assignments.
